Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 – Infiltrating Impel Down

"Have you heard? About the battle at Marineford..."

"Of course! I heard that legendary pirate, the Golden Lion Shiki, is about to be transferred here!"

"Which level are they putting him on?"

"Hah? Are you an idiot? Obviously the sixth level—Eternal Hell!"

"Yeah, makes sense..."

Behind the Gates of Justice, in a cylindrical structure mostly submerged beneath the sea, two bored gatekeepers chatted idly. One of them was so tired he was on the verge of dozing off.

Click...

Suddenly, a soft landing sound snapped one of them to attention.

"What was that noise?!"

"Ah!!!"

The other guard, who had been nodding off, leapt up in a panic. He nearly dropped his rifle, fumbling it in the air several times before finally getting a grip and aiming it behind him.

But when he looked back—there was nothing.

The gate was still sealed tightly, completely undisturbed.

"What the hell, man? Joking around has its limits!"

"I'm not kidding, I really heard footsteps just now... How could this be..." The guard frowned, starting to doubt himself. Had he just imagined it?

...

Behind the massive doors of Impel Down, a shirtless man with numerous gruesome wounds and a long sword at his waist casually strolled through, a pack slung over his shoulder.

It was Orin.

He had bypassed all outer defenses, instantly teleporting from the sky directly inside.

It was almost unthinkable—in one of the World Government's three most heavily guarded fortresses, the prison feared by pirates across the world, said to be impossible to escape from—Impel Down...

A brutal pirate who had just invaded Marineford was now casually wandering its halls.

"I've already made it through both Marineford and Impel Down. What's next? Enies Lobby?"

Though he said that, Orin wasn't particularly interested in Enies Lobby. After all, even Luffy—fresh out to sea—had managed to break through that place. If Orin visited, it'd be more like a tourist trip.

But seriously—

Impel Down was huge.

Even just Level 1 nearly exceeded the range of Orin's Observation Haki. It was practically the size of a town.

Not that he planned on lingering at Level 1.

As he walked, Orin was searching for the optimal spot to teleport to a lower level.

He couldn't just teleport at random and end up in a squad of guards.

While he was confident he could instantly wipe out such fodder, exposure would mean pursuit—and in a closed space like this, once the alarm was raised, it'd be a constant stream of people throwing their lives away trying to stop him.

That would really get in the way of his little chat with Roger.

Not to mention, there were powerful foes like Magellan to consider.

Step... step...

His light footsteps echoed faintly in the halls. Though subtle, the presence of this unfamiliar figure quickly caught the attention of many nearby inmates.

They saw someone who wasn't in a guard uniform, and clearly wasn't a jailer either, strolling casually past.

After a brief moment of stunned disbelief...

A frenzied survival instinct kicked in!

"Hey! You there! Please! Take me with you!"

"I've buried treasures all over the world! I'll do anything! Just get me out of here!!!"

"Brat!!! Let me out right now or I'll kill you!!!"

Pleading, threats, bribes—chaos erupted.

The noise surged so loud it seemed like it might shake the entire prison.

Orin's face darkened instantly, eyes narrowing as black and red lightning crackled around him.

"Shut up!!!"

Buzz—

Thud, thud, thud...

Suddenly, the world fell silent.

The pirates, who'd just been howling in desperation, now lay sprawled out on the ground, eyes rolled back in unconsciousness.

After all, these were just Level 1 fodder—not even a single one of them had a bounty over 100 million Belly.

Even the surveillance Den Den Mushi on the wall collapsed under the force of Orin's Haki—saving him the trouble.

A wide-range Observation Haki sweep revealed at least three levels beneath him.

With one teleport after another, Orin rapidly descended into the deeper levels.

Even if he occasionally ran into patrolling guards, he could either move through their blind spots or knock them unconscious with pure Conqueror's Haki made tangible.

Like a ghost, he prowled the great undersea prison—silent and unseen.

...

As he continued down to Level 5, Orin's Observation Haki picked up a familiar figure:

The future warden of Impel Down, and currently its Vice Warden—Magellan.

Orin immediately pulled his senses back the moment he detected him. The corner of his eye twitched.

Not for any danger...

But because Magellan was once again having diarrhea.

The mental image was too much.

Orin felt like his Observation Haki had been contaminated.

Fortunately, after a few careful teleports and lightning-fast takedowns, he finally reached his destination:

Impel Down Level 6 —Eternal Hell!

Upon arrival, Orin didn't wander.

After all, anyone held here was a legendary pirate whose name echoed through history. A bounty over 100 million was the bare minimum.

These were not the kind of people who could be pacified with a bit of Conqueror's Haki.

To avoid them interfering with his meeting, Orin simply locked onto Roger's cell with Observation Haki, then teleported directly there.

...

At the very deepest part of Eternal Hell—

In a pitch-black solitary cell, not a single ray of light pierced the darkness.

A broad figure sat cross-legged inside.

"You've arrived, Orin."

Roger, who possessed the ability to hear the Voice of All Things, didn't need Observation Haki to recognize the visitor.

Ssshh—

A soft friction sound followed, and a spark lit up the cell.

In the dim glow, a strikingly handsome face was revealed—it was Orin.

"This place is rough, huh? They don't even give you light?"

"Hahahaha, it can't be helped. They only give us one meal a day. If I'd known, I would've turned myself in a bit later, hahaha..."

Even with shackles chaining him down, Roger remained as carefree as ever. Orin couldn't help but sigh.

"Hey hey, Orin," Roger said with a grin and a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Did you bring any booze? I haven't had a drink in ages..."

"No."

"Eh?! You're kidding me... don't do this to me!!!"

Roger instantly pulled an unhappy face and whined like a kid.

Seeing this, Orin finally gave a mischievous smile.

"...Alright, alright. I did bring some."
