## Part Two: In seacrh of Worth
---
Cronos landed.
The impact of his feet on the metallic road sent a single, clean shockwave outward in every direction. In the same moment, Kai was already moving - Composite sword drawn, swinging in a clean arc before Cronos had fully straightened. Cronos brought up a plasma tonfa and intercepted it. Metal met metal. A sharp soundwave cracked through the air and sparks scattered between them.
Cronos followed the defense without pause. He drove the tonfa forward and fired a laser at close range. Kai was still controlling the recoil of his sword and couldn't shift in time. The beam hit him squarely and he was thrown back. He landed hard but rolled, coming up on one knee.
Aya was already there.
She teleported into the space Kai had vacated and opened up, running and firing from multiple directions at once - laser after laser, not giving Cronos a fixed point to track. The beams connected. They pushed him back step by step.
Then Cronos fell.
He hit the road on one knee, and for just a moment it seemed like it might be enough. But the next moment he was standing again - and his laser found the floor in front of him. An explosion tore a section of metallic road free. He grabbed it with one hand and hurled it at Aya. She tried to teleport. She was a half-second too slow.
The impact sent her sliding across the road.
On Cronos's other side, Rai was already spinning. Both axes moved in wide arcs from left and right, aimed at Cronos's head from opposite directions. Cronos ducked. The two axes found each other instead of him. The soundwave from the collision hit everyone in the area like a physical thing.
Before Rai could pull them back, Cronos grabbed the connecting chain and yanked.
Rai came flying at him. Cronos left the ground, met him mid-air, and drove a kick into his face. Blood left Rai's mouth in a spray as he hit the road and slid. He pressed one hand to his mouth, closed his eyes, and reached inward for whatever healing he had left.
**Rai:** *(quietly, to himself)* Why is everything so difficult?
He opened his eyes - and found Cronos standing directly over him, both plasma tonfas aimed at his chest. The distance between the weapon and Rai's heart was nothing. Cronos's finger was already moving.
Then the edge of a Composite sword appeared at Cronos's throat. Kai had moved without sound, pulling Cronos backward and off balance before the shot fired. Cronos fell. Kai tried to press the advantage immediately, bringing his sword down - and Cronos caught it with one hand from the ground. He stood up, holding the blade bare-handed.
Rai had recovered. Aya was back. All three closed in around Cronos.
For a moment, none of them moved.
Then, simultaneously, all three attacked.
**Cronos:** *Nebula Laser Case.*
The area around Cronos filled with smoke - dense, immediate, consuming. Kai, Aya, and Rai lost him in an instant. The smoke offered no shapes, no shadows, no sense of direction. Then blue lights began moving through it. Fast, erratic, coming from everywhere and nowhere.
Lasers hit all three of them before they could track a single source.
Thirty seconds, and it was done.
The smoke dissipated. Cronos was standing in the center of it all, plasma tonfas lowered, dark smoke curling from the barrels. Aya, Rai, and Kai were on the ground. No visible damage marked Cronos's body - though something in the slight set of his shoulders said the ability had cost him something.
He turned.
Shinsei was still standing. Exactly where he had been.
As Cronos began walking toward him, Shinsei seemed to surface from wherever he had gone. His jaw set. Something moved through his expression - not resolve so much as decision.
**Shinsei:** *(quietly, to himself)* What am I doing? Why am I just standing here? But - no. I have to move forward.
The Fist of Harm aura lit red around his hands as he walked toward Cronos.
But before the distance between them closed, he slowed.
He needed to know.
**Shinsei:** *(calling out, from across the space between them)* Do you recognize me?
**Cronos:** *(calm, clear)* Yes.
The word landed on Shinsei like something physical. Every hope he hadn't known he was holding onto broke apart in that single syllable.
**Cronos:** You are the powerful warriors who have defeated six bosses and come here to prove your worth.
Shinsei's chest filled with something that was too sudden and too relieved to name. He kept his face still. But he needed to be certain.
**Shinsei:** Do you know anything else besides that?
Cronos paused. The question was strange and he didn't fully understand it, but he answered honestly.
**Cronos:** No.
That was enough. Shinsei ran.
Cronos raised both tonfas and opened fire. Laser after laser tracked Shinsei's approach. But the aura on Shinsei's hands shifted - from red to green - and he pressed his palms together.
**Shinsei:** *Shadow Absorb Sphere.*
A sphere formed between his joined hands, and Cronos's lasers dissolved into it one by one, absorbed cleanly, the energy contained.
Cronos recognized what was happening and stopped firing. In the space that followed, Shinsei drew his hands apart and directed everything he had absorbed outward in a single release - back toward its source.
Cronos leaped. The blast passed beneath him.
But Shinsei was already in the air. The aura on his hands had shifted to blue.
*Fist of Extreme Sphere Pressure.*
He joined both hands at the peak of his jump and drove the strike down into Cronos's chest. Cronos tried to catch it with his tonfas and failed. The force was too complete. He was launched sideways and crashed into the tower wall.
Shinsei landed. He was breathing harder than usual. His normal composure had shifted into something more urgent, more stripped-down. He used Shadow Step three times in rapid succession - crossing to the far side of the tower in three heartbeats.
Cronos had already gotten up. He looked at Shinsei across the space between them. Then he began walking forward.
**Cronos:** Your attack shook every organ in my body. That genuinely surprised me. But I want to see how long you can maintain this.
He accelerated into a charge. Shinsei went to meet him. What followed was not elegant - it was close and fast and brutal, the kind of fight that had no audience and no pauses. Shadow energy built up between them and both bodies carried the accumulating weight of it.
---
On the far side of the tower, Kai, Aya, and Rai had healed enough to move.
They found Shinsei and Cronos still going - a continuous exchange of strikes, neither of them conceding ground. Rai watched for a moment, and something quietly assembled itself in his mind.
**Rai:** *(low, to Kai and Aya)* When I shout - can you two disarm him?
**Kai:** What do you mean?
**Rai:** I'll explain later. Just tell me if it's possible.
**Aya:** ...Yes, we can.
**Rai:** Good. Now go.
**Kai:** You're not coming?
**Rai:** No more questions. Go.
They didn't understand but they went. Rai turned to face the tower.
**Rai:** Let's start.
He began working on the base.
Cronos registered the sound at the edge of his perception. He had to adjust - had to move away from Shinsei far enough to deal with the new threat. He stopped blocking and struck instead, catching Shinsei in the face. Shinsei's return punch connected with Cronos's chest in the same moment. Both of them were sent back.
Cronos rose before the dust settled. Aya teleported in immediately and hit him with her plasma tonfas - he went airborne again. Before he could recover his orientation, Kai's Composite sword caught him and drove him further back, and then the eight blades separated and flew at him from different angles.
Cronos hit the ground.
**Shinsei:** *(catching his breath, watching)* His body is almost impossible to break.
**Aya:** Then what do we do?
**Shinsei:** We find his weakness. I haven't found one in his body yet. Only his head is left.
**Kai:** Understood.
Cronos came at Kai first this time - sonic speed, closing the gap before Kai had fully raised his sword. He melted the blade with a quick burst and hit Kai directly, forcing him back. Aya teleported behind Cronos and was a half-second from landing her strike when Cronos read the movement, ducked, and turned it around on her. He advanced on Shinsei. Shinsei was ready, fully braced. Cronos burned through the distance.
Shinsei grabbed the tonfa barrel.
He hit Cronos in the face. Cronos took the blow, absorbed it, stepped back, and came again - faster. Shinsei used Shadow Step. They crossed paths in midair, and the area between them filled with Shadow energy, darkening the immediate space. It went on - strike for strike, Shadow Step for Shadow Step - until exhaustion made Shinsei's defense slip for half a second. Cronos's attack found the gap. Lasers broke through Shinsei's armor and entered his body.
Then Kai emerged from the darkness of the Shadow energy and hit Cronos in the face.
Cronos lost his footing.
Kai was moving fast - he unlocked every blade of his Composite sword and drove them into the ground around Cronos's limbs, pinning them. Shinsei, bleeding, cross-stepped the distance and sat on Cronos's chest and began hitting. His head. Again. Again. The glass over Cronos's eyes cracked.
The realization arrived.
*His eyes.*
In the moment that Shinsei understood it -
**Cronos:** *Thermal Pulse.*
Cronos's entire body heated to critical in an instant. The explosion was complete and close-range. Shinsei was thrown clear across the road.
---
At the base of the tower, Rai had torn through almost every support. One pillar remained. The tower was engineered so well that a single pillar could bear its full weight - but one pillar was all that was left.
**Rai:** *Twin Joker's Gambit.*
A silver card and a gold card appeared in his hands, one in each. He turned his head toward the building.
**Rai:** Now!
Kai heard it. Aya heard it.
The smoke from Cronos's thermal pulse was still thick in the air. Cronos could see a shape moving toward him - Kai, weapon raised. He tracked it and prepared. Kai came in, and at the last moment - pulled back.
Cronos's counter connected with nothing. The grip on his plasma tonfa shifted fractionally.
Aya was already there. Her weapons hit, he went down, and Kai stripped the other tonfa from his hand before Cronos could orient. In the same moment, Rai's silver card was in the air, spinning.
Cronos caught it with two fingers.
**Rai:** Yeah!
He struck the last pillar.
The tower moved. It didn't fall quickly - it took a moment to decide, as though reluctant. Then it leaned, and gravity finished the sentence. The entire mass descended toward Cronos. Before it arrived -
**Rai:** *Swap.*
Rai and Cronos exchanged places in a single wordless instant. Rai stood where Cronos had been. Cronos stood where Rai had been - directly beneath several thousand tons of falling tower.
The impact shook the kingdom. Metal folded and compressed and the sound rolled outward in a deep, extended wave. The ground itself seemed to register it. For a moment, everything was just that sound and the cloud of dust moving in every direction.
Rai had landed beside Kai and Aya. He looked at the rubble with a satisfaction he was visibly trying to make look casual.
**Rai:** Even an ultra-modern Robot can't escape my trick.
They stared at the wreckage.
Then: sound.
Movement beneath the rubble.
Cronos rose from the debris as though the pile of twisted metal were nothing more than a blanket he was setting aside. His body was intact. Not a single breach. He shook a piece of collapsed structure from his shoulder and turned to face them.
All of their remaining hope drained away in a single shared glance.
**Rai:** *(a slow, resigned exhale)* I take back what I said.
---
Cronos didn't pause.
He began spinning one tonfa in slow, deliberate circles. The air around it changed - Shadow energy in the area began to drift inward, pulled toward the spinning weapon like water toward a drain. The currents grew, and within moments the light in the immediate area had shifted into something heavy and dark. The metallic road took on the quality of a surface seen through deep water.
Kai saw it. He understood what was coming, and he understood there was no other option.
He stepped forward.
**Cronos:** You have passed the test. But I still want to see your limits.
**SHADOW VORTEX.**
The accumulated energy released from the tonfa in a single streaming mass - blue-lit, enormous, moving so fast that the metallic road beneath it split apart in both directions as it went, the surface folding away like pages. It reached Kai, Aya, and Rai in a fraction of a second.
**Kai:** *Shadow Absorb Mirror.*
A mirror formed in front of them and caught it all.
A shockwave rolled outward from the point of contact. The mirror held. Cronos watched the absorbed energy sitting in the mirror's surface, waiting to see what would happen next.
Kai stepped in front of the mirror and brought both hands to it, beginning to draw the captured energy inward - compressing it, shaping it into something manageable. It was too much. His hands could feel it immediately - the energy exceeded what he could contain. His arms shook. The pressure climbed toward his tolerance threshold, and he could feel where that threshold was. He was reaching it fast. Half the energy hadn't moved yet. His hands were starting to fail.
Then the pressure lessened. Just a little - but enough to breathe.
He looked right.
Shinsei had activated the green aura. His Fist of Absorb. He had stepped in beside Kai without announcement, one hand contributing to the absorption, his face carrying the focused calm of someone doing something effortless.
A smile crossed Kai's face - brief, real.
On the other side, Rai stepped forward and brought his diamond shield up against the laser fire Cronos opened up to interrupt. The shield held. Behind it, Aya was already moving, teleporting behind Cronos, firing, appearing on his right, firing again, reappearing somewhere else - no fixed position, no rhythm he could lock onto, just continuous disorientation from every angle.
The energy in the mirror continued to move inward. Kai's hands were still trembling. He glanced at Shinsei's - steady, unhurried. With one hand on the absorption, With his other hand, he was removing the metallic fragments stuck in his beard. Kai felt something settle into him at the sight. Something about the distance still between them in power .
He looked forward again.
**Kai:** We're ready!
Rai heard it and closed his shield, dropping low. Aya teleported back.
Cronos looked at the space in front of him, where the absorbed energy had been shaped.
**Rai:** *(calling across the distance)* Say cheese.
Kai and Shinsei released it together. Both of them shaped the energy into points at their fingertips and fired. The two beams crossed the distance over Rai's ducked head in the same instant and struck Cronos directly in both eyes.
The explosion turned the metallic road beneath him to powder. A crater opened. Smoke rose and spread across the entire area.
When it cleared, they moved toward him quickly.
What they found stopped them.
Cronos was sitting. Both hands over his eyes, which were covered and dark. Then his hands came down - and from the ruined glass of his eyes, hundreds of small camera-equipped devices emerged like insects finding light. They spread outward in formation and Cronos's vision returned, re-assembled from a thousand tiny feeds.
**Aya:** *(with genuine exhaustion in her voice)* This isn't fair.
**Shinsei:** There's no choice. We have to pierce his body.
He moved a short distance away and sat down. Both hands on the metallic road. Still.
**Kai:** How?
**Shinsei:** Hold him back. Give me time.
The three turned back to Cronos.
**Kai:** Surround him from three sides.
They separated.
Cronos oriented on Kai - locked in, sonic speed, arrived in an instant. Kai moved aside and swung from above. Cronos shifted and the blade pushed him back. He leaped, came back with both tonfas, and this time Kai's sword wasn't fast enough. The attack connected with his chest and Kai was sent back hard. Aya appeared from nothing and lifted Kai away before Cronos could follow with a barrage. Cronos shifted target.
Behind him, Rai had both axes spinning and wrapped the chain around Cronos in one fast arc.
**Rai:** *(with a frustrated, hard-edged anger)* Just *die already*, you tin can!
Cronos tore the chain apart. The snap of it threw Rai off balance, and before he could recover, Cronos had crossed the distance, seized him by the throat, and drove him into the metallic road with enough force to crack the surface. Pieces of the broken road went into Rai's back.
Meanwhile, Shinsei sat with both hands flat against the metal and extended himself inward. He felt for the energy underneath him, the connections between the materials, the particular quality of what this road was made from. Something in him reached deeper.
Then it happened.
His Fist of Harm aura changed. From red to something flat and gray. Where his hands touched the road, rust spread - slowly at first, then moving outward in a dark stain across the surface. Fifty meters. A hundred. Several hundred.
**Shinsei:** *Fist of Rust.*
Cronos saw it. He launched himself at Shinsei with sonic speed, crossing the distance in a single motion. But instead of standing to receive it, Shinsei slid - one hand out, grabbing Cronos's ankle as he arrived, and redirected the entire force of his charge upward. Cronos went into the air. Shinsei leaped after him, joined both hands, and drove them into Cronos's stomach.
Cronos crashed back down to the road. He got up. His stomach registered something different than impact - and when he looked down, he saw rust forming across the plating above his abdomen. His internal calculations adjusted.
He looked up. Aya had already teleported Shinsei clear.
Cronos moved forward, carefully now.
**Aya:** *(quietly to Shinsei)* Those camera devices from his eyes - they're giving him too much. We can't destroy them. We need to stop them from helping him.
**Shinsei:** Don't destroy them. Blind them. Those devices can see everything in open space - but not through smoke.
**Aya:** Understood.
She moved away from him. Hundreds of knives appeared around Cronos in rapid succession - then detonated all at once. Smoke swallowed everything.
Shinsei was already moving into it.
**Shinsei:** *Infinite Punches.*
Cronos couldn't track it. He couldn't track any of it. Blows landed on him from directions that kept changing, a continuous rain of them, and the accumulating weight of each one was doing something that the individual strikes couldn't. He was weakening. He swung forward blindly - his fist connected with Shinsei's torso. Shinsei fell. Cronos raised his tonfas and fired lasers outward in every direction until the smoke was gone.
Silence.
Shinsei was down. Aya was down. Rai was down.
Kai was standing.
One hand on his weapon, the other pressed to his chest where Cronos had caught him earlier. He was healing it, slowly, the Shadow energy working through the damage.
Cronos faced him across the open, quiet road.
**Cronos:** Your limits end here.
He used sonic speed to close the gap - and from that speed, the air in the space around Cronos's path began to be cut. Not by anything visible. Just - cut.
**Kai:** *Sonic Barrage.*
Kai wasn't there. And then he was everywhere. The air itself carved at Cronos's body. A wound appeared. Then another. Then dozens. Cronos stood perfectly still, because there was nothing to track, nothing to face. He could only register each new cut arriving and not know where the next one would come from. And then Kai reappeared behind him - barely standing, one hand braced against nothing, the other hanging, his whole body visibly at the edge of its endurance.
He fell.
Cronos looked down at himself. Fire and electricity were running between the wounds, jumping from cut to cut. One of his plasma tonfas slipped from his hand and fell.
He looked at Kai on the ground.
He walked to him. Kai watched him come and couldn't move. Cronos reached down - but not with a weapon. He crouched beside Kai and a green light built in his hand, and he pressed it gently to Kai's chest.
Kai didn't understand. He didn't fully trust it. His body was too spent to respond either way.
Cronos waited. The light worked.
Above Aya, Rai, and Shinsei, drones appeared - the same kind that had attacked them hours ago, now emitting healing light in quiet beams. The same green, the same patient efficiency.
Kai healed.
When he could move, Cronos stood and extended his hand. Kai took it and was helped to his feet. Together they walked to where the others were recovering. Aya and Rai raised their weapons when they saw Cronos. He held still and waited.
**Cronos:** You don't need to be afraid anymore. The battle ends here. You have defeated me. I have seen what you are worth. You have permission to proceed.
Rai studied him for a long moment. Then, slowly, the weapon came down.
**Rai:** Give us the key to the next gate.
**Cronos:** I don't have it.
**Aya:** What do you mean? Aren't you the Shadow Boss? The ruler of this kingdom?
**Cronos:** No. I am an SC. I am not the ruler here. If you want the key to the next gate, go in that direction.
He pointed.
They looked at him for another moment. Then they began walking in the direction he had indicated.
Cronos watched them go.
When they were out of sight, he raised one hand and held it near his eyes. A quiet light emerged from it and began to move across the broken glass, repairing each piece with slow precision.
**Cronos:** *(barely audible)* You are the ones we have been waiting for. All this time.
Then he fell silent and returned to his tower - now a field of debris, now his again - and began the long work of rebuilding what had been destroyed.
