Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: A Hero's Vow

It was dawn, and Rynan Merryton, a 9-year-old boy, was relaxing in a very dense forest, gathering herbs and other plants for medicinal purposes.

Rynan is a half-elf, a race that has a close connection to the spirits of both heaven and earth.

He is gathering the herbs and plants and putting them in his backpack. Rynan was walking back to his village from gathering those herbs and plants. His village, full of elves, is located in the middle of the very dense forest that he was in. Then, when he came back to his home, he saw his father sitting in a chair on the balcony of their house, just staring into the vast sky, feeling the breeze of the wind on his body.

When he saw his son down below, he smiled at him, but deep inside, he was in sorrow, for he thought of himself as a burden to his son, and because his body was rotting slowly from his toes to his head. It is now near his head, and he cannot move a limb except his head because of the rotting.

Rynan greeted his father in a loud shout, "FATHER! FATHER! I AM BACK!" his father also greeted him back with a nod and a smile while struggling to articulate words, "we...we...weel..come back s..s..son."

Rydel Loramaris is the name of his father. He is a human who was once a hero with a team that was handpicked by the king, who ordered Rydel to defeat the evil king, but he is now retired and crippled with a curse of necrosis. Rydel doesn't know where the curse came from, but he assumes that it came from the evil king that he met when he was a hero, he almost killed the evil king, but was interrupted by one of the many subordinates of the evil king, who was hiding all along without Rydel and his team noticing, and was stalking them since the first time they entered the castle of the evil king. That subordinate was a mage, and Rydel and his team got bombarded by a barrage of fire spells towards Rydel.

PEEEEEWWWW BOOOOOOM!!! SHHHHHH

and were almost defeated by the subordinate of the evil king. Rydel and his team found an opportunity to run away and flee out of there, so they took advantage because the mage was focusing on Rydel; his team retreated while he bought time for them to escape. After his team got out, he ran towards the gates of the castle, where there is an exit, so he ran as fast as he could towards the exit while balls of fire were flying over him, and luckily got outside the castle with his team. Then they conjured a barrier to the gate so that none of the attacks of the subordinate of the evil king reached them, and after that, they left.

Rynan walked to the door of their house and opened it.

There, he saw Reeve Ivetta, his mother, an elf who is knowledgeable in medicine,

and asked her, "Did you get the stuff that I ordered you to get in the forest?" Rynan answered, "Yes, Mom, here's a bag full of herbs and plants for the medicine." " OK! Great, now we mix these ingredients to make a medicine for your father, Rynan," his mother says happily.

Then they make this potion that will ease the pain that the curse is creating for Rynan's father temporarily, and will slow down the rotting of his body. Rynan and Reeve, the mother of Rynan, finished making the potion, so they went upstairs to go to his father on the balcony, sitting on a chair, and made him drink the potion, and it worked; it stopped the pain that Rydel, the father of Rynan, was feeling, and the necrosis was slowing down. After they helped Rydel drink the medicine, they carried him from his chair to the bed to rest.

Reeve, the mother of Rynan, looks outside and sees that it is already nighttime, and goes down from upstairs to cook food for his family for dinner while she orders Rynan to stay beside his father.

Rynan asks his father, "What was it like being a former hero?" his father answered It was fun, from defeating demons, to giants, accepting quests to help and protect the strong. Overall, it was fun being a hero. So, why'd you ask?" "Nothing much, I'm just curious and in awe that you were a hero before marrying my mother," Rydel answered with a smile of admiration towards his father. His mother arrives at the door holding a plate and bowls of food, and then says to them. "ALRIGHT! Booyyss we eat."

Then they ate together inside the bedroom of Rydel, the father of Rynan. When they were finished eating, they went to their respective bedrooms to rest, but before leaving, Rynan, Reeve, and Rydel said goodnight to each other.

When Rynan is on his bed lying down, he is contemplating his father's condition, asking himself, "Why did this happen to my father? If I find the one who put a curse on my father, I will ask why they put a curse to my father?" because of his sorrowful heart and anger towards to the person that he believed who put the curse on his father, then he fell asleep.

The sun is rising, and it is now morning. Rynan got up, went down the stairs, and saw the table full of food for breakfast, but before Rynan sat down at the table, he thought about his father. Then, he filled up a bowl with soup and bread and brought it to his father to eat.

When he got to his father, Rynan said to his father, " Father, here's soup and bread for you," and Rynan fed his father the soup and bread.

When his father is full, he goes out of his father's room to the kitchen to put the bowl down on the kitchen countertop.

Later that morning, Rynan and Reeve, the mother of Rynan, heard a guttural scream of agony upstairs in their house, so they ran towards the sound, and it was Rynan's father screaming in pain because the necrosis was crawling up his head faster than usual.

So, Rynan panicked, already thinking of ways to slow down the necrosis, but his father said to his son, "It's ok, son, this might be my end, but don't be sad, son. Even if I drink those medicines, it only slows down the inevitable. After I pass away, train diligently, so that you may be picked to become a hero in the future. So, let me rest in peace, my son." Rynan answered while crying, "Yes, father, I will train diligently and be strong enough to defeat the evil king that the previous heroes could not defeat just for you, father." "That's my boy," his father responded proudly, then closed his eyes, and the curse reached the head, and his father's body crumbled and turned to ash.

Then and there, Rynan vowed to kill whoever put a curse on his father, and said in a growling rage, "I... will kill the man who did this to my father and make him suffer for what he did to my father." Then, he shouted in a fit of rage, "YOU HEAR ME! I WILL KILL YOU WITH MY VERY HANDS!, RAAHHHHHHH!!"

Crack

After that release of rage, a thunderous sound can be heard outside their house, and it started to rain. Then he began to cry and sob. Suddenly, he goes quiet and goes out of their house while it's raining, finds an axe to cut down a tree, creates a sword from it, and he keeps swinging that wooden sword in a fit of rage. His mother, there, seeing his son in sadness, his own son, in rage, swung and swung the wooden sword until he collapsed on the ground, wet and tired.

Then Rynan's mother goes to his son lying on the ground, saying to his son with a sadness in her heart, " I know that you want revenge, but my son, your body also needs rest. Don't destroy it too much; if you do, you can't continue on your revenge."

So his mother helped his son to stand up and walk in the rain while Rynan staggered towards their home to Rynan's room upstairs to rest and sleep.
