Chapter 23 - Scouting Mission

Memor sat by the lake side with Luni and Alara, it was the following day. As Alara had never really hung out with Luni, Memor thought it would be a good idea.

Currently Memor was seated on the grass behind the two who hit it off, Their conversation flowed naturally, but Memor wasn't listening, his mind was still on the memories Uncle Ceres had transferred him, he was looking through the times where Uncle Ceres was crafting, it didn't make sense to him, as the memory he received was that of the Phantom Realm and he doesn't understand much about it.

There was also a part about the Ripper that caught his curiosity, as Memor doesn't have any Mind Essence because he wasn't a Mnemonist yet, he wouldn't be able to wield his weapon, but somehow, Uncle Ceres has put the strain of the Memory Fragment onto the feather-bladed jian rather than Memor, so if he ever used the Ripper it would deteriorate.

I can do it when I'm a Learner, huh? Memor shook his head and focused back on Luni and Alara, listening in on their conversation.

"Oh, my sister got picked by the Church of Mnemosyne, she'll be leaving Sal Village pretty soon." Luni said.

"Really? Are you going to join her?" Alara asked.

Before Luni could answer, Memor spoke from behind a smile tinging his voice."Hey Luni, you got everything ready for 'sleepy time'."

Turning his head Luni replied tacitly with a devious smile. Afterwards, the three teens did a prank at the tavern near the lake. Though Alara was adamant at first, she got into the rhythm of Memor and Luni pretty quickly, sprinkling aphrodisiacs in the beer barrels at the tavern.

23 days until Memor becomes a Learner.

Year 953 of Refinery Era Day190.

Staring into the entrance of the village, Memor with Ripper strapped to his waist looked at the halted wagon indifferently, as there was no soul watching, he relaxed his body and face—There was no point in acting if there wasn't an audience.

Memor took a step towards the wagon, gradually closing in on the scouting team he was supposed to be a member of. He didn't know why Uncle Ceres would allow Councilor Spyro to play catch with his time, but what did he know, whatever Uncle Ceres planned was out of Memor's knowledge, if he were to ask for an explanation for every action Uncle Ceres takes, he would be turned into a true puppet, rather than a puppet with loose strings.

When the team members were in view, Memor masked on a benign demeanor hiding his emotionless self. Reaching the wagon, Memor collected unceremonious looks from the three members of the team leaning against the wagon, they were conversing with one another prior to Memor's appearance.

I guess they got the prompt from Councilor Spyro. Looking at Yorgos with his brawny build, and warrior eyes, Memor didn't feel anything, the emotions buried in his heart had no fluctuation.

Yorgos's thick lips were sealed shut as he stared at Memor, unlike the other two, Ellis with his high cheek bones and brown skin, and Shepherd with his tiny eyes, thin lips, and light skin who proceeded with their conversation a moment after glancing at Memor.

Is this an intimidation tactic? Does Councilor Spyro really think he could get me to talk just by scaring me a little. I guess his whole performance in my home the other night was just a farce. Without lingering any longer, Yorgos gestured with his head for everyone to get on the wagon so they could depart.

Each member of the party in a line jumped onto the wagon, then Shepherd went on the driver's seat to control the leading horse, then he led the crew out of the village.

Going North-West of the village exit, the group of four journeyed into the wilderness. Memor in the wagon, listened in on Yorgos's and Elis's discussion despite his disinterest.

"I gifted Demi a necklace I bought for cheap from the merchants from Cafoori Village, hopefully I will get some when I come back."Ellis said with a sly smile, then he nudged the bulky Yorgos on the shoulder twice."You know what I mean."

Demi? I'd guess she had probably thrown your gift away. Memor chortled internally.

Sighing deeply Yorgos replied unimpressed."Have some honor, is this all you learned when you trained with my father."

"What'd you expect, I can't compare to you, I'm just lucky your father was even willing to train me." Ellis chuckled self-depricatingly as he said.

"Tsk that is no-." Yorgos stopped himself just as he was intending to retort.

He's really eating this up, huh? Memor studied his teammates carefully, as they could double-cross him at any moment.

Memor and the rest of the team, stopped at high hills in the grassy greenlands, inspecting the movement of travelling herds of animals and noting their paths. Just for the day they had recorded a couple packs of Skrucks roaming the area and many other beasts Memor didn't recognize. One would have a long horn at its nose and kneecaps with grey skin and flat legs, others had the build of a wolf, but their figures would pass in a blur as if all who wished to witness them are rejected.

They tracked the packs and their movement patterns till night fall, when the pale light of the eclipsed moon shone brightly on their skins, did they begin to set up camp. A cozy campfire was lit at the center of the four teens that sat across each other.

In the touchy winds of night where the grass felt colder and the leaves rustled louder, after all the stories had been told, Shepherd asked."What are your plans after this mission?"

Ellis was the first to answer after a second of thought, a slick smile playing on his lips."I might just go visit a sweet heart."

"Tsk She hasn't even taken your hand yet and you speak of such things."Yorgos said disappointedly."And, I saw her smiling with that Zinon kid during our last mission."

"What?!"Ellis's face dropped, his smile slipping off into a look of indignation."How come she didn't tell me?"

"Maybe it's because she wanted that necklace." Yorgos commented, Chuckling a slight bit.

Shepherd laughed at Yorgos's joke, then calmed himself, his eyes staring into the fire glimmering like stars from where Memor sat. Shepherd said."I'd like to visit my grandmother in Cafoori Village after this, I could enjoy her famous Randerkse soup one last time."His voice fell off at the end of his speech.

A moment of silence passed, then Shepherd and Ellis looked at Yorgos expectantly. Seeing as he couldn't avoid the question Yorgos said."I'd like to buy a gift for a woman with the Crits I receive from this mission."

He really said that with a straight face, huh? Shepherd and Ellis looked more embarrassed than Yorgos as he spoke, then he continued.

"She has long red hair and beautiful blue eyes,"Yorgos said with a straight face.

Even without any discernible expressions, Memor could ascertain that those words were aimed at him. Ellis and Shepherd made awkward movements to relieve their flustered nerves.

Just then Yorgos's gaze shifted to Memor, the warrior-like eyes of a person who knew bloodshed stared straight with a faint linger of displeasure written on it as Yorgos asked."What do you plan on doing, Memor?"

The attention from Ellis and Shepherd fell onto Memor, as they attempted to look less anxious with their bodies.

Should I? Having decided on what to do, Memor turned to Yorgos, a soft smile playing on his lips as he said."I don't know, maybe just get a good night's sleep."

Yorgos's gazing didn't waver, only growing more intense, then Memor continued."In fact, why don't I sleep right now? I'd bet I could sleep like a baby right now don't you think?"Memor gestured his hand at Yorgos."And I have such an outstanding and reliable warrior companion by my side to guard me at night."

"You have my word, I shall protect you from any danger that may arise on this mission."Yorgos reassured, but it wasn't so convincing, as his eyes grew sharper.

Memor chortled, holding eye contact with Yorgos and said."Much appreciated, I will head to sleep now, enjoy the rest of your night."

"You too." Yorgos replied, his gaze unfaltering.

Seeing as there was not much more to be said, Memor went to the wagon, pulled out some items and set up tent close to the fire, Just before crawling into the tent, Memor gave the three individuals huddled around the fire a soft smile, then climbed in, not a sound of his heard that night.
