Chapter 6 - chapter 6

The name didn't echo this time.

It broke through.

---

"…J…ay…"

The sound was fragile. Barely there. Like glass trembling before it shatters.

But it was real.

---

The room exploded into motion.

"Did she just speak?!"

"Vitals rising—heart rate unstable!"

"Get Dr. Kim—now!"

---

Yumi couldn't hear them clearly.

Everything felt distant.

Like she was underwater, struggling toward the surface.

Her chest burned.

Her lungs screamed.

> Breathe.

The instinct came back slowly—painfully.

She dragged in a shallow breath.

Air.

Cold.

Sharp.

Real.

---

Pain followed.

Everywhere.

Her fingers curled weakly against the sheets.

Her body—so heavy—felt like it didn't belong to her.

> "Why… does it hurt so much…?"

Because she was alive again.

---

Across the city—

Jay ran.

---

He didn't remember leaving the bookstore.

Didn't remember grabbing his keys.

Didn't even remember getting into the car.

Only one thing existed in his mind—

The address.

Burned into him.

---

His hands tightened on the steering wheel.

His heart pounded violently.

> "Hold on…"

He didn't know who he was saying it to.

Her.

Himself.

Both.

---

"I'm coming."

---

Back in the hospital—

"Yumi, can you hear me?"

A voice cut through the fog.

Firm.

Gentle.

Real.

---

Her eyelids fluttered again.

Heavier this time.

But stronger.

Fighting.

---

Light slipped through the cracks.

Blinding.

Overwhelming.

She flinched, tears pooling at the corners of her eyes.

---

"…Miss Park, if you can hear me, try to respond."

---

Her lips trembled.

Her throat burned.

It felt like sandpaper every time she tried to speak.

But she tried anyway.

---

"…m…om…"

---

Silence.

Then—

A gasp.

---

"Call her mother. Now."

---

---

Jay slammed the brakes harder than he meant to.

The hospital loomed in front of him.

Tall.

Cold.

Unfamiliar.

But somehow—

It felt like he'd been here before.

---

He stepped out of the car, chest tight, breath uneven.

For a moment—

He froze.

---

> "What if I'm wrong?"

> "What if this is all in my head?"

> "What if she's not even real?"

---

Then—

A memory.

A voice.

Soft.

Breaking.

---

"…Will you find me?"

---

Jay's fists clenched.

His jaw tightened.

---

"I already am."

---

And he ran.

---

Inside—

Chaos.

Nurses moving quickly.

Voices overlapping.

Urgency everywhere.

---

Jay grabbed the nearest staff member.

"Room—!" he stopped, realizing—

He didn't know.

---

"…Yumi," he said instead.

"Where is Yumi Park?"

---

The nurse blinked, startled.

"How do you—"

---

"Please," Jay cut in, his voice shaking now. "I need to see her."

---

There was something in his eyes.

Desperation.

Certainty.

Fear.

---

The nurse hesitated—

Then pointed.

"End of the hall. Room 307."

---

Jay didn't wait.

---

Back in the room—

The door hadn't opened yet.

But Yumi felt it.

---

That pull again.

Stronger than ever.

Closer.

---

Her eyes were still barely open—just slivers of light slipping through.

Shapes blurred.

Voices distant.

---

But her heart—

It knew.

---

> Thump.

> Thump.

> THUMP.

---

"…Jay…"

This time, it wasn't just a whisper in her mind.

It was a breath.

A real one.

---

The door burst open.

---

Jay stopped in the doorway.

Frozen.

---

There she was.

---

Not a dream.

Not a shadow.

Not a voice in his head.

---

Real.

---

Pale.

Fragile.

Barely awake.

But—

Real.

---

Machines beeped around her.

Doctors moved quickly.

But Jay saw none of it.

---

Only her.

---

Yumi's vision swam.

Blurred shapes.

Light.

Movement.

---

And then—

A figure.

Standing there.

Still.

Watching her like she might disappear if he blinked.

---

Her eyes focused.

Slowly.

Painfully.

---

And then—

She saw him.

---

"…you…" her voice cracked.

---

Jay took a step forward.

Then another.

Like he was afraid the ground might break beneath him.

---

"…you're real," he whispered.

---

Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes.

---

"You… found me…"

---

Jay let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding.

A broken laugh escaping him.

---

"I told you I would."

---

For a moment—

Everything else disappeared.

The noise.

The machines.

The people.

---

It was just them.

---

Two souls that had been lost—

Finally—

In the same place.

---

And for the first time in ten years—

Yumi wasn't alone.

For a moment, the world held its breath with them.

Then reality rushed back in.

"Sir, you can't be in here—!"

A nurse moved toward Jay, startled, but the doctor raised a hand.

"Wait."

Everyone paused.

Because something unusual was happening.

---

Yumi's gaze hadn't left Jay.

Not even for a second.

Her weak fingers trembled against the sheets, slowly—painfully—lifting just a fraction.

Reaching.

---

Jay saw it.

And without thinking, he stepped closer.

"Just one minute," he said quietly, not looking away from her. "Please."

There was something in his voice—raw, real—that made the room hesitate.

The doctor nodded once.

"One minute."

---

Jay moved to her bedside.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Like this moment was too big.

Too fragile.

Too real.

---

Up close, she looked even more unreal.

Pale skin.

Tired eyes.

Lips still trembling from waking.

But those eyes—

They were the same ones from his dreams.

---

"…Yumi," he said softly.

The name no longer felt strange.

It felt right.

---

Her lips parted slightly.

"…Jay…"

Hearing his name leave her mouth—

Actually hearing it—

Made something inside him crack open.

---

"You really… came," she whispered, her voice barely there.

Jay let out a quiet breath, almost a laugh.

"I think… I was always on my way."

---

Her hand trembled again.

This time, higher.

Closer.

---

Jay hesitated only a second—

Then gently took it.

---

The moment their skin touched—

Everything shifted.

---

A sharp pulse ran through both of them.

Like electricity.

Like memory.

---

Jay's breath caught.

Images flashed behind his eyes—

Too fast.

Too bright.

---

A rainy street.

Laughter.

A girl running ahead of him—

Turning back—

Smiling—

---

Yumi gasped softly.

Her grip tightened, weak but real.

---

"…you remember…?" she asked.

---

Jay's head throbbed.

He squeezed his eyes shut for a second.

"I— I don't know…"

His voice shook.

"But it feels like I should."

---

Another flash—

A black cat.

Small.

Fragile.

---

A scream.

Brakes.

Light.

---

Jay staggered slightly, gripping the edge of the bed with his free hand.

"Ah—!"

---

"Hey!" the doctor stepped forward. "That's enough—he needs to step back."

---

But Yumi held on.

As much as she could.

Her fingers tightening around his.

---

"…don't go…" she whispered.

---

Jay froze.

---

Something in her voice—

So small.

So afraid—

---

"I'm not going anywhere," he said immediately.

---

The doctor frowned, watching the monitor.

"Her heart rate is stabilizing…"

The nurse blinked. "It's syncing—"

"Syncing?" the doctor repeated.

---

Jay didn't understand.

He didn't care.

---

All he knew was—

The moment he touched her—

Something inside both of them aligned.

---

Yumi's breathing steadied slightly.

Still weak.

Still uneven.

But calmer.

---

Her eyes softened.

"…it's quieter now," she whispered.

---

Jay leaned closer.

"What is?"

---

"…everything," she said.

A faint tear slipped down her cheek.

"I was alone for so long…"

Her voice cracked.

"…but when you're here… it stops hurting."

---

Jay's chest tightened painfully.

---

He didn't know her.

Not really.

Not logically.

---

But emotionally—

Something deep inside him already had.

---

"I think…" he started slowly,

"…you weren't alone."

---

Yumi blinked at him.

---

"I just… couldn't reach you yet."

---

Silence fell between them again.

But this time—

It wasn't heavy.

---

It was warm.

---

The doctor cleared his throat gently.

"We need to continue her evaluation."

---

Jay nodded reluctantly.

"…okay."

---

But he didn't let go immediately.

---

Neither did she.

---

Their hands lingered together for just a moment longer—

As if both were afraid that once they separated—

This might all disappear.

---

Finally—

Slowly—

Their fingers slipped apart.

---

Yumi's eyes followed him as he stepped back.

Fear flickering again.

---

Jay noticed.

And gave her a small, reassuring smile.

---

"I'll be right outside," he said.

---

A pause.

Then—

"…promise."

---

Her lips moved slightly.

Weak.

But certain.

---

"…okay…"

---

---

Outside the room—

The door closed softly behind him.

---

Jay leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

His hands trembled.

His heart still racing.

---

"…what is happening to me…?" he whispered.

---

From inside the room—

A steady beep.

Stronger now.

Alive.

---

And for the first time—

Jay realized something that both terrified and grounded him at once.

---

This wasn't just a dream.

This wasn't just coincidence.

---

This was real.

---

And whatever connected them—

Was only just beginning.

---

To be continued… 🌙
