Chapter 39 - Bonus Chapter 36 - Deep Awakening

--Underwater--

Deep beneath the glittering surface of the ocean, the world was a silent, shifting kingdom of endless blue.

Two Sea-folks swam with effortless grace along the jagged contours of the ocean floor, their powerful, shimmering tails swaying in perfect, rhythmic harmony. To any passing creature, they looked like textbook adventurers. They wore heavy leather bags strapped across their torsos, with glowing magical sea lanterns dangling from the straps, casting a warm, flickering amber light across the ancient trenches.

The one leading the expedition was a mage. He wore flowing, dark blue robes with pristine white lining—woven from a rare, enchanted deep-sea silk that didn't drag or absorb water, allowing him to glide through the currents like a slick eel. In his webbed hands, he carefully held a heavily weathered, carved stone tablet, his eyes scanning the glowing runes etched into its surface.

Right behind him swam the vanguard. He was a martial fighter, sporting messy brown hair that floated wildly in the water, wearing light metal chainmail over a specialized leather undersuit. A finely crafted steel broadsword was gripped tightly in his hand, cutting through the water as he swam.

The mage stopped at the mouth of a truly colossal sea cave. The opening was a yawning abyss of absolute blackness, stretching so wide it could have easily swallowed a small kingdom's castle. He glanced down at the carved stone one last time, comparing the ancient typography to the rock formations.

"According to the leyline markers... we're finally here," the mage communicated, his voice traveling through the water in a series of clear, magically resonance vibrations.

The warrior grinned, flashing a row of sharp teeth as he did a lazy loop-de-loop in the current. "Ha! Excellent. So this is the cave we have to clear out. What did the guild post say it was again? A nest of deep-sea eels?"

"Something like that," the mage shrugged, tossing the stone tablet into his leather bag. "This will not be that hard. It's a B-rank mission, after all. We'll blast the nest, harvest the fins, and be back at the tavern in time for the evening feast."

"Spoken like a true intellectual. Let's get some vision in there first." The warrior reached into his utility pouch and pulled out a thick, alchemical glow-rod. He gave it a sharp snap, causing a vibrant, neon-green light to ignite inside the tube, casting eerie shadows across the trench.

With a casual flick of his wrist, he hurled the glow-rod straight into the pitch-black center of the cave.

Thunk. Boing.

Both adventurers blinked, their ears fin-twitching in unison. Instead of sailing into the darkness, the glow-rod abruptly stopped a few feet past the threshold, bouncing backward off the darkness as if it had hit a giant wall of solid rubber. It tumbled lazily through the water, floating right back toward them.

"Huh...?" The mage raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Did you hit a stalagmite?"

"No way, my aim is perfect," the warrior grumbled. He swam forward a few feet, snatching the drifting green glow-rod out of the water. He swam right up to the mouth of the cave, holding the neon light high above his head to inspect whatever had blocked his throw.

As the green light illuminated the darkness, the "cave wall" finally came into focus.

It wasn't stone. The surface was a slick, wet, mottled purple flesh, covered in a faint layer of deep-sea mucus. And as the warrior adjusted the angle of his light, he noticed a massive, circular indentation right in front of his face—a serrated sucker the size of a wagon wheel.

"Hey, bro, uh..." The warrior called back, his casual demeanor slipping just a fraction. "There's something blocking the cave. I thought it was just total darkness, but if you look closely..."

To emphasize his point, he raised his fist and lightly knocked on the fleshy wall.

Thump. Thump.

"...There's definitely something solid here. Kind of squishy, though. You think it's a giant sea cucumber?"

The mage, who had been floating safely backward, suddenly noticed a subtle, terrifying rhythm in the water current. The entire ocean floor seemed to shift by a few inches, expanding and contracting in a slow, heavy cycle. A massive, low-frequency vibration rattled the mage's chest scales.

The mage's eyes dilated into tiny pinpricks.

"Uh... Dude..." the mage stammered, his magical voice transmission cracking violently. "Get off there! IT'S BREATHING!"

"What?" The warrior paused, his fist still resting against the purple flesh.

Suddenly, the "wall" shuddered. The wagon-wheel sucker flexed, its serrated teeth grinding together with a horrible, scraping sound. A few feet above them, the darkness split wide open, revealing a singular, massive, golden-yellow eye with a horizontal slit pupil. The eye was easily larger than a two-story house, and it locked directly onto the two tiny sea-folks floating in front of it.

The sheer, suffocating pressure of an apex predator's presence flooded the water, instantly paralyzing their muscles.

"W-we have to move!" the warrior yelped, his bravado completely evaporating as he frantically began back-paddling his tail. "We gotta report this to the guild! We gotta report this to the king! We gotta report this to anyone who has a weapon larger than a toothpick!"

But it was already too late.

They had officially woken the creature up.

A deafening, subterranean roar tore through the trenches, a sound so violently loud it shattered the nearby coral reefs into fine dust and sent a massive shockwave of displaced water tearing through the abyss. The colossal shadow began to unravel from the cave, pulling out miles of thick, muscular tentacles lined with millions of serrated suckers.

The massive movement created a localized whirlpool, completely sucking the two adventurers into a dizzying spin cycle.

"B-RANK?!" the warrior screamed, losing his grip on his broadsword as he spun wildly in the current. "YOU SAID THIS WAS A B-RANK MISSION!"

"THE GUILD AUDITORS ARE LIARS!" the mage shouted back, his expensive blue robes wrapping around his face as he desperately tried to swim against the massive undertow.

The legendary horror of the deep didn't even notice the two tiny sea-folks.

To the Kraken, they were nothing more than annoying gnats that had rudely interrupted its slumber.

With a violent, earth-shattering sweep of its primary appendages, the leviathan launched its massive body upward, leaving the cave entirely behind as it surged toward the upper levels of the ocean in search of a proper meal.
