Chapter 23 - Noah's File

Dr. Sienna Vale's office had always been a sanctuary of calm professionalism, but the tension radiating from Isabel Crowe transformed the space into something that felt more like an interrogation room. Isabel sat across from Vale's desk with the predatory stillness of someone who held absolute power and was deciding how to use it.

"I need Noah Mercer's complete medical file," Isabel said without preamble. "Everything. Diagnosis, prognosis, treatment history, psychological evaluations—all of it."

Vale's fingers tightened imperceptibly around her coffee cup. "Ms. Crowe, you know I can't release confidential medical information without the patient's consent. That's not just OrionX policy—it's federal law."

"Dr. Vale." Isabel's voice carried the kind of authority that came from controlling billion-dollar budgets and deciding careers with a signature. "Let me be very clear about our situation. Dr. Drake's recent behavior has compromised mission security in ways that threaten this entire organization. His relationship with Mr. Mercer appears to be a significant factor in his psychological instability."

"Noah has no official connection to the Saturn mission. He's not an OrionX employee, and his medical status is irrelevant to—"

"His medical status becomes relevant when it influences the mental state of our suspended chief engineer." Isabel leaned forward, her eyes cold as arctic steel. "I have reports suggesting that Mr. Mercer's condition is deteriorating rapidly. Dr. Drake's recent erratic behavior—the unauthorized investigations, the confrontation with Emory Thorne, the apparent coordination with outside parties—all of this correlates with increased stress about his partner's health."

Vale felt a chill that had nothing to do with the office's air conditioning. Isabel's information was too detailed, too specific. It suggested surveillance that went far beyond normal corporate security protocols.

"How do you know about Noah's condition deteriorating?"

Isabel's smile was winter-sharp. "Dr. Vale, OrionX has significant interests in protecting its personnel and assets. When key individuals become potential security risks, we take appropriate measures to understand the factors that might compromise their judgment."

"You've been monitoring them."

"We've been protecting a multi-billion-dollar investment from individuals who have demonstrated questionable judgment and apparent disregard for organizational security."

Vale stared at the woman across from her, understanding that this conversation was really about power, control, and the willingness of corporate interests to destroy individual lives to protect larger agendas. Isabel wasn't just requesting Noah's medical file—she was demanding the ammunition to separate Eli from the one person who might provide him with emotional stability and moral support.

"What exactly are you planning to do with Noah's medical information?"

"That depends on what the information reveals." Isabel's tone suggested that she already knew exactly what Noah's file contained and was simply seeking official confirmation. "If Mr. Mercer's condition is as serious as our preliminary assessment suggests, then Dr. Drake's attachment to him represents a significant psychological liability."

"You want to use Noah's illness against Eli."

"I want to ensure that Dr. Drake's personal relationships don't compromise the safety and success of the most important space mission in OrionX's history." Isabel stood, her movement precise and predatory. "Dr. Vale, you have twenty-four hours to provide Mr. Mercer's complete medical file. If you refuse, I'll have the legal department subpoena the records and review your own professional conduct for potential ethics violations."

The threat hung in the air like a blade. Vale realized that Isabel had positioned this request in a way that made refusal professionally suicidal while compliance morally devastating.

"There are laws protecting patient confidentiality—"

"There are also laws governing national security and corporate liability." Isabel moved toward the door, her hand resting on the handle like a weapon. "Dr. Vale, I suggest you consider whether your loyalty lies with individual patients or with the larger mission that could advance human space exploration by decades."

After Isabel left, Vale sat alone in her office, staring at the secure filing cabinet that contained Noah's medical records. She knew what those files revealed: a progressive neurological condition that was worsening despite experimental treatments, a prognosis that measured survival in years rather than decades, and a patient who had chosen to hide the full extent of his deterioration from the person he loved most.

Using that information against Eli would be professionally and ethically devastating. But refusing to provide it might not only end her career but also create an opening for Isabel to obtain the records through legal channels that would be even more damaging to Noah's privacy.

Vale pulled out her secure phone and dialed a number that she hadn't used in years—a contact from her previous work with NASA who had experience dealing with corporate pressure and government interference in space programs.

"Marcus, this is Sienna Vale. I need advice about a situation that involves medical ethics, corporate coercion, and a space mission that might be more dangerous than anyone realizes."

As she explained the situation to her former colleague, Vale realized that she was crossing a line from passive participant to active resistance. Isabel Crowe had made the mistake of assuming that medical professionals could be intimidated into violating their ethical obligations for corporate convenience.

But some lines couldn't be crossed, regardless of the professional consequences.

"Marcus, I need you to help me protect a patient's confidentiality while exposing a conspiracy that might be planning to sabotage the most important space mission of our lifetime."

The conversation that followed would establish the foundation for a network of resistance that extended far beyond OrionX's corporate structure, connecting medical professionals, former NASA employees, and investigative journalists who understood that some truths were worth the risk of opposing powerful interests.

But in the short term, Vale faced an immediate choice: comply with Isabel's demands and betray Noah's trust, or refuse and face the destruction of her career while potentially exposing Noah to even worse consequences.

She looked at Noah's file, thinking about the gentle man who baked pastries and loved Eli Drake with a fierce loyalty that illness couldn't diminish. Then she looked at her computer, where she could draft the refusal that would probably end her career but might preserve something more important than professional success.

The choice, when it came, was surprisingly easy.
