Chapter 36: Missing Things
"What are you writing?" Hermione leaned closer to take a peek at his paper.
Harry threw her a glance. This incessant curiosity was something that could not be easily overwritten unless he directly commanded her to stop asking questions.
But even if it annoyed him on occasion, he would rather not do that. He didn't want to have a mindless drone as a follower. Just the fact that she was completely loyal to him was more than enough.
"I am taking some notes about things I wish to get done during the summer," Harry explained.
"Really?..." Hermione glanced at what was written on the parchment with confusion. "But what are those symbols? I can't understand anything."
Harry smirked. "Of course you can't. This is a runic language of my own creation. All my writing is done this way, so my secrets will never be revealed to my enemies, in case they somehow got a hold of them."
He had based this language on a primitive one he had learned from some demons in the past.
"Enemies? You don't mean… You-Know-Who?" Hermione spoke in a soft whisper. They were in a corner of the library, and quite a few students were close by.
"What?... Oh, that one." Harry had almost forgotten about Voldemort.
'It was thanks to that Dark Lord that I was able to snatch this great body for myself. Under different circumstances, I may even thank him, but…' That man was trying to take over the country, not to mention he was also obsessed with killing Harry Potter.
'By this time, he must have learned that the boy he "killed" was still alive. He will certainly try again.' He had also made a promise to get rid of the boy's enemies, and Voldemort was certainly a big one.
"Yes, I suppose that is one of my enemies." Although when Hermione asked about it, he had been thinking of Dumbledore and the other professors when talking about his code language.
"One of them?" Hermione couldn't think of anyone else who could be considered an enemy of him. "Were you talking about Malfoy then?"
"The blonde boy?... Please. That one is just a spoiled brat."
The only one who caught his interest in that group was the girl who resembled Helena.
"I will make her mine, no matter what…"
"Make who yours?" Hermione tilted her head. "Are you still talking about Malfoy?"
"Of course not!. Don't be ridiculous." Harry shouted.
"Keep it quiet! This is a library." The librarian complained about his outburst.
Harry sighed and returned to his writing.
The silence of the library was broken again when she began to murmur loudly about something.
"Why is that weird girl going around without shoes?" Hermione commented. "Wait… is she coming this way?"
Harry lifted his eyes from the parchment and glanced at Luna as she got to their table. "You are late."
"I was looking for my earrings… they were missing from the table this morning…" Luna looked very sad.
"Your earrings? I would be more worried about not wearing shoes if I were you. You are going to ruin your feet by walking around like that," Hermione commented.
"Did you lose them again?" Harry had conjured some for her the last time they met. "How can you be so careless?"
He couldn't have one of his followers giving such a bad image.
"But the earrings were something my mom left me, before…"
"Don't tell me… it was a memento?" Hermione just realized it by her expression.
Luna nodded.
"Then you have to find them. I'm sure there is a spell for that." Hermione turned to Harry. "Right?"
"Well, of course there is a spell to find lost things… There are spells for everything." Harry stood up. "Fine, let's fix this."
"You will help me find them?" Luna asked.
"What choice do I have?... but first," Harry conjured a new pair of shoes, "put these on. You are drawing too much attention to yourself by walking around like that."
"Thanks!" Luna said with a smile.
"I'm Hermione Granger, by the way." Hermione introduced herself.
"Luna Lovegood… wow, you don't have any Wrackspurts around you either," Luna commented.
"I… what?" Hermione looked confused.
They walked outside the library, and Harry demonstrated the spell to Luna. She was the one who had to cast it since the missing thing was hers.
"So that's the spell. Just use it, and it will lead you to the missing object. You need a good mental image of the item in question, or it will not work," Harry explained.
Luna pulled her wand from her ear and performed a simple movement. "Invenio…"
"Did it work?..." Hermione stared at Luna with curiosity. She had become so interested in learning a new spell that she didn't even ask how Harry and Luna had met.
"The wand is pulling me that way." Luna pointed to her left.
"Then go. Follow the pull. It will lead you to your earrings." Harry told her while wondering why he was wasting his afternoon in such a frivolous endeavor.
Despite all his evil doings, he always had a soft spot for young, beautiful women, especially those loyal to him. They had been his weakness for most of his life, and something he never managed to get rid of.
They followed Luna up to the seventh floor and into more hallways until they reached a resting area close to the Ravenclaw tower.
These were all over the castle as points where the students could relax and read while outside their common room or the library.
"I think it's over there…" Luna pointed at a group of older girls.
There were three of them sitting around a circular table and having a chat.
Harry only recognized one of the girls, and it was the one that Luna had specifically pointed at.
"That's Cho Chang… she's a popular girl from Ravenclaw," Hermione commented. "Why would she have your ear—oh…"
It was then that she realized what was happening and looked at Luna with pity.
Luna had not been losing her things all year. Someone from her house had been messing with her the whole time.
Harry also understood the situation much better now. Luna had earned a reputation as the weird girl of Hogwarts, so she was made fun of very often.
It wasn't strange that she was also bullied by these older and more popular girls.
"Leave this to me. I know just what to do." Harry said as he pulled a wand from his pocket.
