Chapter 6 - Hiding

"Hey, do you know where the restroom is?" Ryan suddenly asked.

"Hmm, let me ask."

Ryan opened his mouth and wanted to ask what do you mean by 'let me ask?', but Kevin already stood up and walked towards the nearest guard.

He talked with the guard for a while and walked back. "That guard will guide you there, you just need to follow him and don't make any suspicious move."

That easy? He thought they were under surveillance and it would be difficult for them to leave even for the restroom. Anyway it worked out better for him.

Ryan walked towards the guard.

"Excuse me! Where is the restroom?"

The guard looked at Ryan. The look on his eyes indicated that he was irritated because of being disturbed.

"How about you just give me the directions and wait here." Seeing the guard's expression becoming more grim, he smiled widely and explained, "Don't worry, I will not escape. You also know how tight the security in the perimeter is. An experimental subject like me has no chance of escape."

"Moreover, if I am really that capable, I would not be left alone here, and would get special treatment." He added, "You also knew who led me here right."

Ryan thought about the power of that brown haired man. From that, he inferred that his position must be high.

The guard expression became thoughtful. Ryan came here with the magic squad captain. If even the magic squad captain didn't detect anything suspicious about him, then there was nothing to worry, if the captain's judgement was wrong, then…then it was something beyond his means. Coming to that conclusion, he looked at Ryan's smiling face with a bit of wariness.

He averted his gaze towards Kevin that was likely to get a position higher than him in the future, he gulped hard. He knew that his eye was special, for him to give the man in front of him special treatment already indicated something.

He didn't want to gamble his life just based on his assumption that the one in front of him was just a powerless man.

"Alright." The guard conceded. He only hoped nothing wrong would happen because of this, otherwise his life would forfeit just the same.

"You just need to walk straight until that intersection." He said while pointing towards where the intersection was. "Then, turn right. You just need to walk past two houses, the restroom located behind the third house."

"Okay." Ryan beamed.

"Don't take too long, otherwise you know the consequences." The guard threatened, though it was like just a last resort to regain his dignity if one saw his expression.

Ryan followed the direction the guard pointed. After he turned right and disappeared from the guard line of sight, he began looking left and right. Seeing no one seems to be following him, he heaved a sigh of relief.

After passing the first house, he saw a tree that was growing in front of the second house.

That's it!

He walked towards the tree, and seeing no one around, he started to dig using a stone he found on the way.

Then he took out the pouch from his clothes and poured out something that resembled black marbles before covering the hole again and disguised the place as best as he could to make it look normal.

He then hurriedly went to the restroom to throw away the pouch and washed his hand.

The guard was relieved when he saw Ryan emerging from the intersection. It seems he still have a long time ahead.

When Ryan came back he didn't find Kevin anywhere. Suddenly,

"Everyone, quiet down!"

Ryan felt his eardrum tremble because of the voice, along with the voice he could feel a sudden pressure descended into his body.

He looked at the source of the voice and saw the man who brought him to the surface.

The man's expression was serious and intimidating.

"My name was Richard Brown, the captain of this raiding operation." He began by introducing himself.

"I don't care what you feel, but I must tell you that the place you had been before was an underground laboratory that conducted human experiments. And you," He paused for a bit. "You are the experiment subjects."

"What??"

"Impossible, it's impossible."

"Lie, it must be a lie and you are a liar!"

"How can this be, how can this be?"

Many expressed their disbelief. They couldn't associate the kind person they had been interacting with to a cruel person who performed experiments on humans.

"Do you think I am lying?" Richard provoked, "Kevin, come up!"

Ryan suddenly widened his eyes as he saw the disappeared Kevin suddenly appeared along with the brown haired man.

Then, he began to feel admiration towards him. He was a man who could understand circumstances. Just as they reached outside, he already integrated himself into the person who had the highest authority.

"What an astute child."

He watched as Kevin walked towards the man.

"Some of you must know him, or maybe you all knew him." The man said, "His name is Kevin, you must have not seen him for some time, now look at him, especially his eyes." He stressed.

Kevin began blinking his eyes, showing his different eyes.

"Kevin was lucky and had successfully undergone eye transplant. But the others were not." He explained, "Think about how many you were there at first and how many now. Those who disappeared were those whose transplantation failed and died because of it."

Everyone's hearts went cold hearing it. If what Richard said was true, then it could be their time next, undergoing experiments with a low success rate.

"That's not all, even if the experiment is successful, it's not guaranteed that everything will work the same as before." Richard said, "Kevin, explain the difference after you undergo the transplantation."

"My eyes would trobe sometimes and it could even be very painful that I hope I could gauge my eye out." Kevin explained, "My vision also changed, as what my left eye saw was different from my right eye. I need some time to get used to it."

"Other than that, I also saw several people getting crazy even though their transplants were also successful."

"You heard it yourself, Kevin was already a fortunate one, but can you guarantee that you yourself was as fortunate as him?" Richard's eyes scanned everyone, prompting many to avert their eyes.

"I am here not to give any of you an explanation, you don't deserve it. I explained because I don't want you to wrong the city lord and hold a grudge against her."

"Now, you need to coordinate with the guard to undergo an examination. I hope you all could cooperate, otherwise don't blame the guards if they became rough."

Then, everybody was led towards a huge building. They would need to be searched by the guards before being allowed to enter.

Ryan doesn't know what examination it was, but he hoped no one would find something wrong with him.

As the queue moved up, it was finally his turn to enter.

"Hands up!"

Ryan cooperated fully as the guards searched him, unfortunately they didn't find anything.

"Enter!"

It was finally time to determine whether he could become free or not.
