Chapter 19: The Transmuter's Trick

With his ability to escape bindings secured, Adam turned his attention to another common threat in the Nen world: elemental attacks. Transmuters, who could imbue their aura with properties like fire or electricity, posed a unique and painful challenge. Adam needed a skill to mitigate such damage.
" Alright, Adam, time to get burned. Or shocked. Or frozen. Whatever! I need some elemental resistance. Because getting set on fire by a Nen user is just rude. And I'm pretty sure my 'Skin Hardening' doesn't cover 'spontaneous combustion.' "
Adam used his 'Gyo' to scan the arena for transmuters. He looked for auras that shimmered with distinct colors or had unusual properties, like heat or crackling energy. He found his target: a flamboyant transmuter named Ignis, whose aura, when he fought, crackled with visible electricity, and whose punches delivered powerful shocks. Ignis's aura, visible to Adam, was like a miniature lightning storm.
" Ignis, you magnificent spark plug! You're going to teach me how to not get fried! And by 'teach,' I mean 'electrocute me until I die, so I can learn to not get electrocuted.' It's a shocking revelation, really. "
Adam signed up for a match against Ignis. As they stepped onto the platform, Adam adopted a tone of exaggerated awe, mixed with his usual playful taunts.
"Ignis, my electrifying friend!" Adam began, gesturing dramatically. "Your aura is simply… sparkling! It's as if you're a walking, talking power plant! Do you perhaps charge your phone with your fists? Because your energy is truly… shocking. Though, I must say, a little over-the-top. All that crackling and zapping. Where's the subtlety? The quiet menace? The interpretive dance number with static electricity?"
Ignis, clearly enjoying the attention, merely smirked, his aura flaring with visible blue sparks. Adam felt the tingling sensation of static electricity in the air around him.
" Oh, he's going for the electricity! Excellent! This is exactly what I need! Come on, Ignis, zap me! Fry me! Make me feel like a human toaster, and then kill me! For the skill! "
Adam feigned a clumsy attack, allowing Ignis to counter with a powerful, electrically charged punch. Adam's 'Ten' and 'Skin Hardening' provided some defense, but the raw electrical energy coursed through his body. He felt his muscles seize, his heart race erratically. The pain was sharp, burning, and debilitating.
"Ooh! Zappy!" Adam gasped, his body twitching uncontrollably. "Very… stimulating! Is this what it feels like to be a human battery? Because I'm pretty sure I'm short-circuiting!"
Ignis, seeing Adam's body convulse, delivered a final, massive electrical discharge, sending a lethal current through Adam's system. His heart stopped, his nerves fried. Darkness.

[ ** SYSTEM MESSAGE: ACQUIRED SKILL: [B-RANK SKILL] ELEMENTAL RESISTANCE (LOW). ** ]
" YES! Elemental Resistance! Finally! Now I can resist being turned into a crispy critter! Slightly! Take that, random fire mages and lightning benders! My days of being a human barbecue are over! Well, mostly over. 'Low' probably means I can only resist, like, a really weak spark. "
Adam gasped, sitting bolt upright in his inn room, a phantom tingling sensation lingering in his limbs. He felt a subtle, almost imperceptible shift in his body, a minor resilience against various forms of energy. He was at 18/20 unique deaths.
He quickly made his way back to the arena. He found Gon and Killua, who were discussing their next training. Adam, unable to resist, decided to test his new skill. He spotted a particularly cold ice vending machine.
"Watch this, boys!" Adam announced, dramatically placing his hand on the icy surface. He focused, and the intense cold seemed slightly less biting. "The master of temperature control is here! I'm practically a human thermostat!"
Gon's eyes widened. "Whoa! It's super cold! Doesn't that hurt?"
"Only a little!" Adam grinned. "It's all about adapting! And occasionally dying for the cause! Two more deaths! We're practically there! Then, the world! Or at least, Yorknew City!"
Adam was now a walking, talking fortress of various resistances and abilities. His arsenal was growing, preparing him for the dangers that lay ahead. He was two deaths away from his first major system upgrade.
