Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Space Between Us

The sirens were growing louder, echoing through the hollow metal ribs of the warehouse. Red and blue lights flashed faintly from the broken windows. They had seconds—maybe less—before the police or Cipher's backup closed in.

Luca grabbed Elijah's wrist. "This way."

Elijah yanked back on instinct. "Since when do I take orders from you?"

"Since you want to stay alive," Luca shot back, already pulling him toward a narrow side door half-hidden behind a stack of crates.

---

They slipped into the cold night air, breath steaming in the chill. The alley stretched like a shadowy vein between buildings, trash bins and puddles glistening under the faint glow of a flickering streetlamp.

Elijah's boots splashed through water as they ran. His forearm throbbed from the knife cut, and every step made his muscles ache, but Luca didn't slow until they reached the dead end of the alley.

"Great," Elijah muttered. "We're trapped."

Luca didn't reply—he just stepped closer to the brick wall, scanning it with his gloved fingers until he found a hidden latch. With a push, part of the wall groaned and swung inward, revealing a dark passage.

"You have a lot of secret doors, don't you?" Elijah said as he ducked inside.

"You'd be surprised how many enemies you avoid when you know all the exits." Luca's voice was quiet now, almost unreadable.

---

Inside, the narrow tunnel smelled of dust and damp stone. The sound of the sirens faded behind them, replaced by the drip of water somewhere in the dark.

They walked in silence, the only light coming from Luca's small flashlight. Every time the beam caught his profile—the sharp line of his jaw, the determined set of his mouth—Elijah's thoughts twisted dangerously.

This was the man who ruined his life.

This was also the man who had just saved it.

---

"You're bleeding," Luca said suddenly.

"It's nothing."

Luca stopped, blocking the tunnel. "It's not nothing."

Before Elijah could protest, Luca pulled a small med kit from his jacket, the kind you only carry if you've patched up more wounds than you can count. He crouched in front of Elijah, gloved hands surprisingly careful as he rolled back the sleeve.

The flashlight lay on the ground, its light pooling upward, turning Luca's eyes into molten shadows.

"You don't have to—" Elijah started.

"I know I don't." Luca's voice was steady. "But I want to."

---

For a moment, all Elijah could hear was the echo of water and the sound of his own heartbeat. Luca's fingers brushed his skin as he cleaned the cut, sending a jolt through him that had nothing to do with pain.

"Does it hurt?" Luca asked.

Elijah met his gaze. "Not the way you think."

Something flickered between them—dangerous, unspoken.

Luca finished wrapping the bandage, his hands lingering just a second too long before he stood.

---

They kept walking until the tunnel opened into an abandoned subway platform. The tracks were silent, swallowed by darkness.

"This is where we split," Luca said, stepping back. "You go east. You'll be safe for tonight."

Elijah frowned. "And you?"

"I've got a meeting with someone who owes me answers." Luca's eyes locked on his. "And Elijah… stay out of sight. Cipher won't stop until you're dead."

---

Elijah should've walked away. He should've turned his back and vanished into the night.

But as Luca's figure started to fade into the shadows, his voice came out before he could stop it.

"Luca."

The other man paused.

"…Thanks," Elijah said quietly.

For the first time, Luca's expression softened, just for a heartbeat. "Don't thank me yet."

And then he was gone, leaving Elijah alone with the echo of footsteps and the bitter knowledge that the space between them was getting smaller… and far more dangerous.
