Chapter 92 - 92

John didn't wait for a command. He moved to the center of the room and dropped to one knee. Internally, he triggered his adrenal manipulation, forcing his heart rate to level out and his mind into a state of cold, crystalline serenity.

"I have heeded your summons, Demon Head," John said, his voice steady and devoid of tremors.

The figure didn't turn around immediately. "Join me," the man commanded, his voice carrying the weight of centuries.

John stood and walked to the balcony's edge. Ra's al Ghul gave him a brief glance before returning his gaze to the courtyard below.

Beneath them, hundreds of ninjas moved in perfect, terrifying unison. They were undergoing grueling training, their blades whistling through the air as they performed their katas, a sea of black cloth and steel shifting against the stone floor like a single, living organism.

A curious, almost conversational tone slipped into Ra's voice. "What do you think of this, John? Standing at this height, looking down upon everything?"

The Demon Head seemed to read John's internal shift with unsettling ease. Before John could even formulate a diplomatic response, Ra's spoke again, his voice dropping an octave. "Do not lie to me. Do not tell me what you think I wish to hear. I will know if you deceive me, even in the heightened state you have forced your body into."

John's brow arched slightly at the warning. The implications were heavy, Ra's was not only aware of his metahuman ability to manipulate his own physiology, but he was currently monitoring it. The League was no longer playing at willful ignorance, they were acknowledging his power as a known variable.

John turned his gaze back to the sprawling horizon. He looked past the hundreds of ninjas sweating through their drills in the courtyard, past the ancient, gnarled trees clinging to the mountainside, and toward the thin, shimmering sliver of the blue sea visible in the far distance.

He didn't try to sound like something he wasn't. He simply spoke the truth.

"I think the view is beautiful," John said.

Ra's face remained still, showing no expression at the simple answer. Instead, his voice drifted to a more domestic, yet pointed, subject. "And what of your new accommodations? The service provided to you?"

"It was pleasant," John replied. His voice remained flat, devoid of the warmth usually associated with the words. "Though Dog has decided he doesn't much care for canned food."

The statement was almost humorous, a dry piece of domestic trivia inserted into a den of assassins, yet John delivered it with such a detachment that it was impossible to tell if he was joking or merely reporting a fact.

A flicker of something, perhaps a brief flash of disappointment crossed Ra's eyes. "I see," he murmured.

He turned away from the balcony and paced back into the center of the hollow room. With a fluid, practiced motion, he shrugged his shoulders, the heavy silk robe slid from his frame, pooling on the floor behind him like a shed skin. He stood bare-chested in his black trousers, his torso a roadmap of jagged scars, silvered by age and countless battles. Each mark told a story of a death defied.

"Our further discussion will depend entirely on your performance here," Ra's stated, his voice echoing against the minimalist walls. "I have reviewed the assessments and the advancement you displayed during your last assignment. It has made me both proud... and curious."

Ra's planted his feet, his posture perfect, yet he kept his hands clasped firmly behind his back. It was a position of supreme confidence and a blatant provocation. He gestured with a slight tilt of his chin, wordlessly inviting John to strike.

"Come," he commanded. "Show me what you have become."

John didn't hesitate. To face the Demon Head with anything less than his full lethality would be an insult, one that Ra's would likely repay with death.

He centered his breathing, tapping into the deep well of his Chi manipulation. A subtle, golden warmth began to radiate from his core, flowing through his veins like liquid fire. Combined with his adrenal manipulation, his perception of the room shifted; the dust motes hanging in the shafts of light slowed to a crawl, and the sound of the wind outside became a low, distant roar.

To any observer, John simply vanished.

He exploded forward with the precision of a Grandmaster, his footsteps silent against the polished floor. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, his lead hand snapping out in a specialized palm strike aimed directly at Ra's solar plexus. It was infused with a concentrated burst of Chi designed to disrupt the internal organs upon impact.

Ra's didn't flinch. Even as the strike whistled through the air, his hands remained clasped firmly behind his back.

At the very last microsecond, Ra's pivoted his lead foot by a mere fraction of an inch. John's palm grazed the air where Ra's chest had been a moment before. The sheer force of the missed blow sent a ripple of displaced air through the room, snapping the silk curtains like a whip.

"Better," Ra's murmured, his voice calm even as John's momentum carried him past. "But speed is a crutch if the intent is telegraphed. Your energy is loud, John. It sings of your arrival before your hand can deliver the message."

John spun on his heel, his eyes narrowed. He wasn't winded, his body was perfectly regulated, but he realized now that he wasn't fighting street grunts like he had for the past months, he needed to forget that.

John stayed calm as he took the critique as fuel. In his serene, adrenal-heightened state, he didn't just hear Ra's words, he integrated them instantly. He focused inward, dampening the "noise" of his Chi, pulling the warmth from the surface of his skin and tucking it deep into his marrow.

He lunged again, but this time John's movements lost their jagged, aggressive edges, smoothing out into a lethal, rhythmic flow that blurred the line between dance and martial arts.

Through his adrenal manipulation, John took manual control of his cardiovascular system. As his fist chambered for a heavy blow, he forced a massive surge of oxygenated blood into his triceps and shoulder, making the muscle fibers twitch with explosive, localized power.

The moment the strike landed or was parried he instantly constricted those same vessels, shunting the heat and lactic acid away to prevent fatigue. This "tactical pumping" allowed him to move with a stuttering, supernatural cadence that defied Ra's al Ghul's ability to predict his timing.

John's hands became a flickering web of motion. He launched a three-finger spear-hand toward Ra's throat, and as the Demon Head tilted his head to let it pass, John didn't pull back. He allowed his momentum to roll into a spinning back-elbow, his Chi now acting like a silent lubricant for his joints, removing every friction-filled micro-second of lag.

Ra's was forced to bring his hands up, his palms meeting John's strikes with the rhythmic thud-thud-thud of a drum. Each time their skin met, a small shockwave of displaced Chi rippled outward, snapping the loose fabric of Ra's trousers and causing the dust on the floor to swirl.
