Chapter 37 - Chapter 36: The First Mission

Evidently, Luna had no interest in guessing Ye Lan's money-making methods. She knew that even if he didn't tell her now, he would eventually, right before he actually earned a sum from it.

Slightly disappointed at not getting the reaction he wanted, Ye Lan gave an awkward smile and went into the kitchen to prepare their dinner.

The ingredients at home were limited, so they couldn't be as extravagant as before until they got more money. With this in mind, Ye Lan simply made a home-style stir-fry and served it with egg-fried rice made from yesterday's leftovers, which settled their dinner.

After eating, they both went to their respective rooms to sleep. Their next actions required the authority that came with the Fixer certification. Until they received it the next morning, all they could do was wait.

Soon, after a peaceful night's sleep, the awakened Ye Lan and Luna found a package at their doorstep containing the Fixer certification and their office plaque.

Yes, the City had courier companies. And not just courier companies; there were companies of all sizes in various industries not covered by the Wings, such as food service, toys, and so on. Their purpose was to fill the gaps in the small industries that the Wings couldn't be bothered with.

These small companies, lacking their own Singularity technology, would often rent the technological products of the Wings, paying exorbitant fees in exchange for a competitive edge.

But they also often met tragic ends because of these high expenses. A simple market fluctuation could cause a wave of poorly managed companies, unable to continue paying the rent for Singularity tech, to lose their competitiveness and eventually disappear completely under the exploitation of the Wings.

This was the rule of the City, but for this particular courier company that rented W Corp's Singularity technology, it was still just a rule.

Of course, this had nothing to do with Ye Lan and Luna, who were currently enjoying their breakfast.

Ye Lan sipped his coffee as he tore open the package containing his Fixer certification and office plaque. Inside was a box with the U Corp logo engraved on it. According to the instructions on the box, it was a one-time-use stasis box.

Presumably, the Hana Association used this rather expensive storage method to mail Fixer-related credentials as a form of intimidation to the recipients.

Following the instructions, he opened the box. Inside was a palm-sized card with some of Ye Lan's personal information and the name of his office.

The other item was an A4-sized office plaque made of frosted metal. Engraved on it was the name of Ye Lan's office—The Abnormality Office—the representative, Ye Lan, and most importantly, the office logo: a simple line drawing of an upper body with a bucket scooping a glowing circle from its head.

To anyone who knew about Lobotomy Corporation's Singularity, the meaning was quite clear: using a "bucket" to dredge Abnormalities from the sea of human consciousness.

In addition to these two items needed to open his office, Ye Lan also found a letter from the Hana Association. The letter specified the monthly rent his Abnormality Office had to pay to the Association, as well as a commission that served as an assessment for a new Fixer and a newly opened office.

This commission was classified as Urban Myth level, a difficulty almost impossible for a newly certified Grade 9 Fixer to complete alone.

But for someone who intended to open their own office right after becoming a Fixer, if they couldn't handle a commission of this level, it was better to just join an existing office and start from the bottom.

"Well, at least our first commission isn't finding a cat."

Ye Lan smiled and handed the letter to Luna, who had just finished her glass of milk. The little girl took the letter and read it, quickly finding the part related to the commission:

Commission: Find and eliminate the gang "The Noose Gang" entrenched in Backstreet 10.

Threat Level: Urban Myth.

Proof of Completion: The noose of "The Noose Gang's" leader, a pink-dyed rope made of metal wire.

Reward: Hana Association certified Fixer Office Plaque, XXXX An.

"Wow, that's a lot of An!"

Luna counted carefully. The An from this commission alone was enough for the two of them to live normally for a month. But while the reward was generous, the difficulty of the mission for a normal Grade 9 Fixer was indeed terrifyingly high.

"It's wiping out a gang. Even a small one is basically impossible for a lone Grade 9 Fixer to face head-on."

"But it's different for you," Luna said as she helped Ye Lan take both their plates to the kitchen and put them in the dishwasher.

"Want to come with me to Backstreet 10?" Ye Lan asked Luna as he was getting dressed to go out. After getting her affirmative reply, he packed the little girl's spare parasol into his bag.

Not long after, the two of them, fully dressed, left the house and headed through the exit of District 9 towards another of the City's Backstreets. Of course, while they said "walk," they actually took transportation. Although they couldn't take W Corp's WARP train, there were plenty of other normal modes of transport.

And just going to Backstreet 10 wasn't much more expensive than the WARP train.

Arriving in Backstreet 10, the two of them spent half a day dealing with the newly formed gang. Most of that time was spent just asking the residents of Backstreet 10 for the gang's base of operations. The actual time spent eliminating these gang members, who made their living by ambushing and garroting passersby for their money and organs, was only as long as a post-meal workout.

"But are there really still old-school artisans these days who hide in alleys with a noose to ambush people, strangle them, and then take their money and organs?" Ye Lan rarely commented on a gang, but this one was an exception. After all, on his Earth in his past life, this method had been outdated since the Victorian era.

"Eh, Ye Lan, have you seen this method of killing before?"

"In history books, I guess..."

The two chatted as they walked to the nearby notary district. Once they handed in the proof of completion, they would have the money for today's lunch.

"Speaking of which, do you think Uncle Roland will come looking for trouble after he sobers up today?" Luna suddenly thought of this as they entered the notary district.
