Apollo and Artemis would keep snarling at each other if they were together, so Leto took Apollo outside the room. It was a wise judgment because all that an immobile patient could do alone was groan in pain and swallow the anger. Artemis’ swearing words bounced off the cave wall and even echoed in the passage.
There was a limestone fault under Mount Cynthus. As the rainwater gathered and flew downhill, it carved out the body of the rock and created a cave. And ever since the Temple of Apollo was built, Leto stayed in this place, hiding from the eyes of the people.
The cave ceiling had an air hole that functioned as a vent. It was a cavity in the ground formed after the collapse of soft soil. The part connected the cave with the outside world, but Leto was concerned about the sunlight invading her space, so she hung a closely woven reed net and covered the hole.
