Chapter 22: "WHAT?"
"Who are you?" he asked, his voice low and unreadable, his eyes sharp as if he could pierce right through her.
Ju-kyoung's throat went dry. Her heart pounded so loudly in her chest she thought he could hear it. She lifted her chin just slightly, forcing a faint smile that wavered at the corners. I can't let him see I'm scared. If I panic, I'll be caught for sure.
Her mind raced desperately. Say something, anything… no, better yet, distract him.
Then an idea sparked—childish, but it was all she had. If I point over there, maybe he'll look. Then I'll run.
Her eyes widened as she pointed ahead. "What is that?" she blurted.
Seo-jin's brow furrowed as he glanced at her hand. His face was unreadable, but his tone was flat.
"What are you doing?"
Ju-kyoung bit her lip. He didn't fall for it. She forced a smile, muttering under her breath, "It didn't work. Darn it…"
Without wasting another second, she spun around and tried to bolt. Her legs, trembling from nerves, betrayed her. She tripped on her own foot and stumbled forward, bracing for the painful crash to the ground.
But it never came.
Instead, a firm tug on her bag yanked her backwards. She gasped as her back pressed against something solid—his chest. The heat of him startled her more than the fall.
Her wide eyes turned to him. He had pulled her upright, his dark aura close enough to swallow her whole. His face, this close, was even more striking than she remembered—sharp lines, dark eyes that seemed to search every inch of her. The frightening intensity from moments ago had softened, almost calm now, though his gaze still held her frozen in place.
"What?" he murmured, his voice so quiet it almost blended with the night air.
Ju-kyoung's lips parted. "Thank—" she began before the reality of the situation hit her. She yanked her bag free, her nerves exploding. "YOU!" she shrieked, spinning on her heel and running with every ounce of strength in her small legs.
Her steps were clumsy, her pace far from graceful, but adrenaline pushed her forward. He just stood there, watching as her figure grew smaller. A wry smile tugged at his lips, but he made no move to chase.
"Saebom High," he muttered under his breath, as if recognizing her uniform.
He turned to leave when realization struck. His eyes widened slightly.
"Wait. My helmet!"
He scanned the street, but she was already gone. "Hey!" he called out, irritation slipping into his voice.
"Darn it."

Meanwhile, Ju-kyoung finally slowed down as the familiar street to her house came into view. She bent over, clutching her knees, trying to catch her breath.
Her mind spun. I almost got dragged into something with those delinquents… just because I was avoiding Sam-mi. What kind of bad luck is this?!
She straightened and checked her reflection quickly in a window, patting her cheeks, her hair, making sure her makeup hadn't smudged. Relief washed over her—until her gaze dropped to what she was clutching tightly in her hands.
"The helmet?!" she gasped. Her eyebrows knitted together. "Why… why did I take this with me?"
She turned sharply to her left, half-expecting him to come storming after her. Her chest tightened. If he's coming for this, I'm dead. What if he finds out who I really am?
Footsteps approached. Her eyes widened. Without thinking, she slammed the helmet over her face like a shield.
"Acne girl from the comic shop?" a familiar voice asked.
Ju-kyoung froze. Slowly, she shook her head. "No," she squeaked.
Her brother, Lim Ju-young, burst into laughter. "Pfft—hahaha! Did you get spooked?" He doubled over, clutching his stomach.
Ju-kyoung ripped the helmet off her face, cheeks red from embarrassment and fear. She sighed in relief. "It's just you."
Ju-young smirked, still laughing. "You looked ridiculous. Ju-kyoung, I swear—"
Her patience snapped. She brandished the helmet like a weapon and chased him down the street.
"Lim Ju-young! I'll kill you!"
