Liam's eyes snapped open, and he was met with the sterile smell of a hospital room. He was disoriented for a moment, but as his gaze fell upon the nurse standing beside his bed, he let out a loud groan and tried to sit up. The nurse, startled by his sudden movement, jumped back and almost lost her balance.
Liam's eyes were fixed on his leg, or rather, where his leg used to be. A wave of memories came flooding back, and he remembered the explosion, the pain, and the feeling of his leg being torn from his body. He felt a lump form in his throat as he gazed at the stump, a constant reminder of his new reality.
Despite the initial shock, Liam's thoughts soon turned to Selena. He had to know if she was okay. He remembered that she was pregnant, and a surge of fear and anxiety coursed through his veins. He pressed the pager button beside his bed, and a few moments later, a nurse entered with a wheelchair.
"I need to see my fiancée," Liam said, his voice firm but laced with concern. "Selena, she was with me...is she okay?"
The nurse's expression was sympathetic, but she didn't answer Liam's question directly. "Let's get you into this wheelchair, and I'll take you to see her," she said, her voice gentle.
Selena lay in her hospital bed, her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. She was aware of the beeping of the machines surrounding her, but it was all just a distant hum. Her mind was numb, unable to process the events that had led her here.
The explosion. The noise. The feeling of being thrown through the air. It was all just a jumbled mess in her mind.
And then there was the baby. Her baby. Could it have survived? Selena's hand instinctively went to her belly, but it was wrapped in bandages and wires. She couldn't feel anything.
Tears began to stream down her face as she thought about the possibility of losing her child. She had been so excited to become a mother, to start a new life with Liam. And now, it might all be taken away from her.
The door to her room opened, and a nurse came in with a wheelchair-bound Liam. Selena's eyes locked onto his, and she saw the concern and fear etched on his face.
"Liam," she called out to him, her voice barely audible from the worry.
Liam's face lit up with a mix of relief and worry as he saw Selena's tears. "Hey, it's okay," he said, his voice soft. "I'm here. We'll get through this together."
But Selena just shook her head, her eyes welling up with more tears. "Your leg, are you okay?" she whispered. "I'm so sorry…I tried to save you and Jonah, but destiny caught up with us. The baby, I was never a mother in my last life. I'm so scared. Every time I try to save someone, I always get punished. Please."
Liam nodded, his heart racing with anticipation and fear. His eyes dripped from her concern. Her small hand reached for his.He was wheeled out of his room, his eyes fixed on the door ahead, willing it to open and reveal the truth about Selena's condition.
A crisp knock sounded at the door, a short redheaded doctor made it into the room with her chart and a notepad. She gave Liam the oddest stare.
Liam shrank; he was on heavy painkillers, his leg was bandaged. Selena was the only thing that could get him through this a second time.
"Hey, I'm Dr. MacTavish, I'm with obstetrics and gynecology here at Haven, I will be in charge of your care " the doctor said with a warm smile, as she entered the room with a nurse. "Hello, Selena and you, Mr. Reinhold. I'm glad to see you're both awake and doing relatively well, considering the circumstances."
Dr. MacTavish's eyes flicked to the chart in her hand, before focusing on Selena. "Selena, I want to talk to you about your pregnancy. We've run some tests, and I'm pleased to say that both fetuses are still viable."
"Both?" Liam said, his eyes widened.
Selena's eyes widened, and she sat up straight, her face filled with hope. "Really?"
Dr. MacTavish nodded, her expression serious. "However, we do need to monitor you closely. The explosion caused some placental abruption, which can lead to complications. We'll need to keep a close eye on your blood pressure and theit heart rate."
Liam's face was etched with worry, as he reached out to take Selena's hand. "What does this mean for Selena and the baby?" he asked, his voice laced with concern.
Dr. MacTavish's expression softened. "We'll do everything in our power to ensure the best possible outcome. But I want to be upfront with you both - there are risks involved. We'll need to take things one day at a time and monitor the situation closely."
"Selena, I'm afraid you'll need to stay in the hospital for at least 7-10 days," Dr. MacTavish said, her expression serious. "We need to monitor you closely for any signs of complications and ensure that the baby is developing normally."
Selena nodded, her face pale but determined. "I understand. I just want to make sure the baby is okay."
Dr. MacTavish smiled. "We'll do everything in our power to ensure the best possible outcome for you and your baby. In the meantime, we'll need to run some more tests and monitor your blood pressure and the baby's heart rate closely."
Liam squeezed Selena's hand, his eyes filled with concern. "We'll get through this together," he said, his voice soft.
Dr. MacTavish nodded. Her brows furrowed, his wasn't like the average person who'd be bitter and angry. "I'll make sure to keep you both updated on Selena's condition. In the meantime, let's focus on getting Selena and the baby the care they need."
Dr. MacTavish looked at the man in the chair and said, "Your Orthopedic surgeon called up, a friend called in a favor and he's looking after you. You need to go back to your room."
Liam's face fell as he looked at Dr. MacTavish, his mind racing with the implications. "My orthopedic surgeon?" he repeated, his voice laced with concern.
Dr. MacTavish nodded sympathetically. "Yes, Liam. Your surgeon, Dr. Singh, needs to speak with you about your leg. You've suffered a severe injury, and they need to discuss your treatment options with you."
Liam's eyes dropped to his leg, or rather, where his leg used to be. He felt a wave of nausea wash over him, and his head spun. He knew he needed to focus on his own recovery, but it was hard to think about himself when Selena and the baby were still in danger.
"Selena..." Liam started to say, but Dr. MacTavish interrupted him.
"Liam, you need to take care of yourself right now. You're not going to be any help to Selena if you're not recovering properly. Please, go and speak with Dr. Singh. We'll take good care of Selena while you're gone."
Dr. MacTavish's voice was firm but gentle, and Liam knew she was right. He nodded reluctantly, feeling a mix of emotions: worry, fear, and uncertainty.
"I'll go," Liam said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "But please, take care of Selena and the babied. They're all I have left."
Dr. MacTavish's expression softened, and she placed a reassuring hand on Liam's shoulder. "We'll do everything in our power to ensure the best possible outcome for Selena and the babies. You can trust us."
Liam's head hung and he looked up at a single tear running down his cheek "I love you, Selena." he said looking at her blood stained gown.
Selena looked at him and croaked full of emotion and said "I love you too." her tears running down her face. "Focus on you for now." Selena said.
Liam looked at her brown eyes, " Okay." he said his voice was shaky. With that, Liam allowed himself to be wheeled out of Selena's room, leaving her in the care of the medical team.
The nurse, whose name tag read "Rachel", smiled warmly as she approached Selena's bedside. "Hi, I'm Rachel, and I'll be your nurse today between 7pm and 7am," she said, her voice gentle and soothing. She wrote her name and the date on the board.
As Rachel began to assess Selena's condition, her eyes couldn't help but fall on the ruined wedding dress that Selena still wore. The once-beautiful gown was now torn and stained, a poignant reminder of the traumatic events that had unfolded.
Rachel's expression softened, and she looked at Selena with a deep sense of pity. "Oh, sweetie, I'm so sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "You were supposed to be celebrating your special day, not lying in a hospital bed."
Selena's eyes welled up with tears as she looked down at her ruined dress. She felt a lump form in her throat as she thought about the wedding day that had been shattered by the explosion.
Rachel's voice broke into Selena's thoughts. "Let's get you comfortable, okay? We'll get you changed into a hospital gown, and I'll bring you some blankets to keep you warm."
