Chapter 20: A Day in the City
The morning sun cast a golden glow over the city as Luo Shen and Arya stepped out of his house. The air was filled with the familiar scents of street food and the distant hum of traffic. Luo Shen had decided that today, they would take a break from the weight of the Obsidian Core and the looming threats. It was a day for Arya to experience the simple joys of Earth life.
Arya, still in her advanced battle suit, immediately drew the attention of passersby. Her suit, a sleek and otherworldly design, shimmered with an other - worldly sheen that was impossible to ignore. People on the sidewalks stole glances at her, their eyes wide with curiosity. Some even slowed down their pace to get a better look, though most were too polite to stare openly.
Luo Shen noticed the attention and grinned. "You might want to tone it down a bit. Earth isn't used to seeing something like that."
Arya looked down at her suit, confused. "This is normal attire for me during missions. But if it causes too much attention..." With a flick of her wrist, the suit seemed to ripple and then faded into a more mundane - looking set of clothes. It still had a certain elegance to it, but it no longer screamed "alien technology."
"Better," Luo Shen said, leading the way down the street. "Come on, I'll show you around."
As they walked through the city, Luo Shen pointed out various aspects of Earth's culture. He showed her the old - fashioned bookstores with their shelves stacked high with paper books, the bustling coffee shops filled with people chatting over cups of steaming coffee, and the colorful flower markets. Arya listened intently, asking questions about everything from why people paid for coffee when they could make it at home to the significance of the different flowers.
When they passed a clothing store, Luo Shen stopped. "You know, you could use some more Earth - appropriate clothes. Let's get you a few things."
Arya followed him inside, looking around with a mix of curiosity and bemusement. The racks were filled with a riot of colors and fabrics, a far cry from the functional and utilitarian clothing of Aetherion. Luo Shen started pulling out different items, holding them up against Arya and laughing at some of the more outlandish combinations. Arya, in turn, seemed to be enjoying the process, trying on clothes and striking poses in front of the mirror. Their light - hearted banter filled the store, drawing smiles from the salespeople.
After leaving the store with several bags of new clothes, they stopped at an ice - cream parlor. Luo Shen bought two cones, handing one to Arya. "Try this. It's one of Earth's greatest inventions."
Arya took the cone, eyeing the colorful scoop of ice - cream warily. She took a small lick, and her eyes widened in surprise. "This is... amazing. So cold, yet so sweet." She took another, larger bite, savoring the taste.
As they sat on a bench enjoying their ice - cream, a few young men walked by. One of them, bolder than the rest, decided to flirt with Arya. "Hey there, beautiful. Is this your first time in the city?"
Arya looked up, confused. She had no idea how to respond to such an advance. Luo Shen, trying not to laugh, stepped in. "She's a bit new to all this. Maybe give her some space."
The young men, realizing they were out of their depth, mumbled something and walked away. Arya looked at Luo Shen, still a bit bewildered. "What was that? Why were they acting like that?"
Luo Shen chuckled. "They thought you were beautiful, so they were trying to talk to you. It's a human way of showing interest."
Arya shook her head, a small smile on her face. "Aetherians are much more direct. This is all very... strange."
As the day wore on, the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over the city. Luo Shen and Arya made their way back to his house, their arms filled with bags of new clothes and memories of the day. The contrast between Arya's Aetherian origins and her new - found Earthly experiences was palpable, but it only seemed to strengthen the bond between them.
By the time they reached the house, both were tired but content. Luo Shen opened the door, and they stepped inside, ready to rest and perhaps share more stories of their respective worlds. It had been a day of discovery, of laughter, and of growing closer, and as they settled in for the evening, they knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together.
As the evening sun painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, Luo Shen and Arya sat at the small dining table in his house, going through the day's events in their minds. Luo Shen sipped on a cup of tea, his brows furrowed in thought.
"Arya," he began, setting the cup down, "I think it would be a good idea if you registered as a hunter. There are certain benefits, and it would give you more freedom to operate on Earth. Also, it could help us keep an eye on any potential threats related to the Obsidian Core."
Arya tilted her head, considering the idea. "I see. But I'm not from Earth. Won't there be difficulties with the registration process?"
Luo Shen grinned. "Well, with your advanced technology, I'm sure you can handle it. You can create the necessary papers easily, right?"
Arya nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "That won't be a problem. I can forge the required documents in no time."
True to her word, within an hour, Arya had used her wrist - mounted device to generate all the necessary identification and documentation to pass her off as an Earth - born hunter. The papers looked so authentic that even a seasoned expert would have been hard - pressed to tell they were fakes.
The next day, the pair made their way to the China Hunters Association. The building was a massive, imposing structure, with a steady stream of hunters coming and going. Luo Shen led Arya inside, and they made their way to the registration counter.
The woman behind the counter looked up as they approached. "Good day. How can I help you?"
Luo Shen stepped forward. "We're here to register my friend as a hunter. She's new in town."
The woman nodded and handed them a form. "Fill this out, and then we'll proceed to the power assessment."
Arya quickly filled out the form with the false details she had created. When they were done, they were led to a large, open room filled with various high - tech equipment.
A middle - aged man, who introduced himself as the chief assessor, stood waiting for them. "Welcome. Place your hand on this scanner, and we'll measure your power level."
Arya knew she had to hold back. She couldn't let her true SS - rank power be revealed, as it would cause too much of a stir. So, she focused, channeling only a fraction of her true strength.
The scanner hummed to life, and lights flashed across its display. The chief assessor's eyes widened slightly. "Well, this is quite impressive. Based on the readings, you're an A - rank hunter. With some training and experience, you could potentially rise even higher."
Arya smiled politely. "Thank you. I look forward to contributing to the hunter community."
Luo Shen beamed with pride. "I knew you'd do great."
With the registration process complete, Arya now held an official hunter's license. As they left the building, Luo Shen couldn't help but feel that having Arya as an officially recognized hunter was a step in the right direction. And with her true power held in reserve, they had an ace up their sleeve for whatever challenges the future might bring.
