Even during summer break, students with responsibilities still showed up at school. As student council president, Mayumi had to attend for official duties, but she was also using the school for another, more personal reason.
"If Mari finds out, I wonder if she'll just be mad," Mayumi mused.
"Who knows? But meeting outside is tricky," Tatsuya replied.
Both Mayumi and Tatsuya were at school nearly every day for student council and disciplinary committee work, but they had another reason for being there together.
"I want to go on a normal date, you know," Mayumi said, pouting slightly.
"No helping it," Tatsuya said. "You're from the Ten Master Clans, and we're keeping this a secret from your family."
"Tatsuya-kun, I told you to stop calling me 'President' when we're alone," Mayumi said, her tone playfully pleading.
Her cute insistence softened Tatsuya's expression. "Mayumi, I'd love to go on normal dates too, but it'd be bad if your father found out."
"I know," she sighed. "That sly old tanuki would make a huge fuss."
"You talk like that about him?" Tatsuya asked, a wry smile creeping onto his face.
"I'm a normal high school girl, aren't I? Every daughter badmouths her dad sometimes," Mayumi said defensively.
"Fair enough. Still, it's surprising," Tatsuya admitted.
"Doesn't Miyuki ever badmouth your dad?" she asked.
Their relationship was still new, and Mayumi didn't know much about Tatsuya's family situation. His smile turned bitter.
"Our dad's too busy living with his new wife's family. Miyuki and I only think of him as our biological father, nothing more," he said.
"That's way harsher than anything I said," Mayumi replied, taken aback.
Unsure how to respond, she tried to brush it off by calling him sharp-tongued. But Tatsuya could tell she was flustered, and her attempt to hide it only made him smile wryly again.
"By the way, Tatsuya-kun," Mayumi said, shifting gears.
"What?"
"Are you really bad at using magic?"
"Where'd that come from?" he asked, caught off guard.
"You took down Ichijou head-on in Monolith Code. The Ten Master Clans are buzzing about you. It doesn't make sense that someone like you can't use magic well," she said.
Tatsuya had suspected Mayumi might be onto something, but it seemed she hadn't fully pieced it together. Deciding it was too hard to keep hiding, and having already cleared it with Hayama, he took a deep breath.
"Mayumi, what I'm about to tell you is absolutely confidential. Not a word to your family or Mari," he said, his tone grave.
"What's with the serious vibe? You're scaring me," Mayumi said, half-joking.
"It's that important," he replied.
His intense gaze made her blush, though she quickly composed herself, sitting up straighter.
"I do have magic I can use freely, but it's not something I can show just anyone," he began.
"Magic you can't show? It's not, like, military classified, is it?" she asked, her eyes narrowing.
"You know about that? As expected of a Saegusa," Tatsuya said, impressed.
Mayumi didn't know the specifics of classified magic, but she was aware such things existed.
"'Decomposition,' which breaks down information structures, and 'Regrowth,' which fully copies an Eidos to restore its original state. Those are the only two magics I can use freely," he explained.
"So Ichijou's attack…" Mayumi trailed off.
"Hit me directly, like you're thinking. Broken ribs, ruptured organs. Normally, I wouldn't have been able to move," he confirmed.
Mayumi's hand flew to her mouth, her face paling. The revelation hit her hard, and Tatsuya observed her reaction almost detachedly.
"There's more," he continued. "You know about the crime syndicate that interfered with the Nine Schools Competition, right?"
"Yeah, you told me in the tent," she said.
"I played a role in wiping them out."
"Wiping them out? Isn't that the military's job?" she asked, shocked.
"I'm a special officer in the 101st Brigade's Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion," he revealed.
"No way…" Mayumi whispered, stunned.
She'd heard of the battalion, but learning Tatsuya was part of it was a massive shock.
"So you… arrested those syndicate members?" she asked hesitantly.
"No," he said.
"Then… you killed them?" she pressed, her voice trembling.
The word was heavy for a high school girl, but Tatsuya's answer was beyond her expectations.
"I didn't kill them. I erased them," he said.
"Erased?" she echoed.
"I told you about Decomposition. It breaks down structures, including human bodies," he explained.
His calm delivery sent a chill through Mayumi, followed by a wave of nausea.
"That's a normal reaction," Tatsuya said gently. "You don't need to get used to this."
He was distancing himself, and Mayumi understood. He lived in a different world—one she couldn't fully grasp.
"If I scare you, Mayumi, it's okay if you want to break up. Only Miyuki knows about this, so no one else would find out," he said.
That meant no teasing, but also no comfort from others.
"No way! I'm not breaking up with you!" Mayumi shouted, almost childishly defiant.
"Mayumi?" Tatsuya said, surprised.
"No matter who you are, you're my boyfriend! Even if you're carrying something heavy, I'd never leave you over it!" she declared, tears streaming down her face.
Tatsuya pulled her into a gentle embrace. It hit him that, despite dating, they hadn't done much as a couple until now.
"One more thing, and this is confidential too," he said.
"What? There's more?" she asked, her voice shaky.
"You mentioned the Ten Master Clans buzzing about me," he said.
"Yeah…" Mayumi replied, a sinking feeling growing inside her.
Something told her his next words would hit harder than anything so far.
"One family isn't buzzing," he said.
"Which one?" she asked, bracing herself.
"Yotsuba. I'm the son of Yotsuba Miya, formerly Yotsuba Shunya, the older sister of the current head, Yotsuba Maya."
"So you're Ten Master Clans…" Mayumi whispered.
"No. Like I said, I can't use magic well. I may have Yotsuba blood, but I'm not recognized as one of them," he clarified.
A mischievous idea sparked in Mayumi's mind—one only she and Tatsuya could pull off, or so her characteristic impulsiveness decided.
"Hey, Tatsuya-kun," she said, her tone shifting.
"What?"
"There's a way to make you part of the Ten Master Clans."
"Like Juumonji said—through marriage?" Tatsuya asked, catching on.
"Exactly. And your girlfriend happens to be from the Ten Master Clans, right?" she said with a grin.
"True," he acknowledged.
Tatsuya thought she was proposing marriage. But Mayumi was thinking bigger.
"Right now, the Saegusa and Yotsuba don't get along. But if someone from each family had a child together, wouldn't that mend things?" she said, her eyes gleaming.
"Whoa, slow down. Isn't that a bit premature?" Tatsuya said, taken aback.
"No, it's already overdue! Come on, Tatsuya-kun, let's make a baby together!" she declared.
Once Mayumi got like this, even Tatsuya couldn't stop her. As she started shedding her clothes, he sighed and began undressing too. She'd completely forgotten they were in the student council room, but Tatsuya hadn't…
