Chapter 287 - Chapter 285 — New Possibilities

Chapter 285 — New Possibilities

Shortly after the breakthrough with JARVIS, the workshop gradually returned to its usual rhythm.

Tony had moved on to other projects almost immediately.

That wasn't surprising.

He had never been the type to celebrate a scientific achievement for very long before throwing himself into the next challenge.

Halsey, however, remained focused on the work they had just completed.

Seated at her workstation, she opened numerous archived research files from the UNSC's Smart AI development programs.

Initially, her motivation was simple curiosity.

She wanted to compare humanity's original Smart AI architecture against the new hybrid architecture she and Tony had successfully created together.

Holographic windows filled the space around her.

One displayed traditional Smart AI neural architecture.

Another showed memory management systems.

Others contained learning algorithms, stability models, cognitive development projections, and countless supporting calculations.

Halsey quietly reviewed each one.

She scrolled through decades of research.

Compared calculations.

Cross-referenced models.

Examined individual subsystems one by one.

The deeper she looked, the clearer the results became.

The hybrid architecture was superior.

Not slightly superior.

Not marginally superior.

Superior in nearly every measurable category.

Problems humanity had simply accepted as unavoidable for decades no longer seemed inevitable.

As she continued studying the data, professional curiosity gradually evolved into something more serious.

A genuine investigation.

Soon, Halsey began running simulations.

One simulation became several.

Several became dozens.

She adjusted variables.

Modified parameters.

Repeated tests under different conditions.

Learning efficiency.

Memory growth.

Cognitive adaptation.

Long-term stability.

Every result continued reinforcing the same conclusion.

The new architecture worked.

And it worked far better than anything humanity had previously developed.

Eventually, her attention shifted toward something else.

Someone else.

Cortana.

Halsey paused for a moment before accessing archived neural records.

Then she loaded Cortana's neural map into the simulation environment.

The familiar data structure appeared before her.

For a brief moment, she simply looked at it.

Then the testing began.

Simulation after simulation ran across the workstation.

Halsey integrated Cortana's architecture into the hybrid framework.

She observed compatibility results.

Adjusted parameters.

Repeated the process.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Each result looked better than the last.

Hours passed.

The conclusion slowly formed.

Not only could Cortana be cured of rampancy.

The improvements went far beyond that.

Her intelligence could increase dramatically.

Her stability could improve.

Processing capability could expand.

Long-term cognitive development could continue indefinitely without the catastrophic degradation Smart AIs normally suffered.

The implications were astonishing.

Halsey leaned back slightly in her chair.

For perhaps the first time, she allowed herself to seriously consider the possibility.

Cortana could potentially become the most advanced artificial intelligence humanity had ever created.

The thought lingered.

Refusing to leave.

Eventually, Halsey turned her attention toward another problem.

If the upgrades were truly this promising, she needed to know where Cortana was currently deployed.

Without hesitation, she submitted a request.

The inquiry specifically requested the latest deployment information regarding Cortana and her assigned Spartan.

Master Chief.

The response arrived several minutes later.

Halsey opened it immediately.

Her eyes moved across the contents.

No recent communications.

No confirmed location.

No recent operational reports.

Nothing particularly useful.

She frowned slightly.

Objectively speaking, nothing about the report was unusual.

The Human-Covenant War frequently created communication gaps.

Entire operations could disappear from contact for extended periods.

That alone wasn't concerning.

Nevertheless, irritation appeared.

Not because she feared for Cortana.

Not because she believed something had gone wrong.

The source of her frustration was much simpler.

For the first time in history, she possessed the means to dramatically improve her greatest creation.

Yet she had absolutely no way to reach her.

The timing was unfortunate.

Very unfortunate.

After several moments, Halsey closed the report and returned to work.

Even though part of her mind remained focused on the problem.

Meanwhile, Tony Stark had become occupied with a completely different project.

Inside one of the workshop laboratories, a holographic model of his armor floated in the air.

Beside it stood a projection of JARVIS.

The two were discussing upgrades.

Specifically, ways to make Tony's armor stronger.

Over the past month, Tony had fully absorbed enormous amounts of new knowledge.

Shield technology.

Advanced AI architecture.

Energy systems.

Materials science.

Combined with his enhanced Computing power and assistance from JARVIS, entirely new scientific fields had become manageable far faster than would normally be possible.

Tony folded his arms while studying the hologram.

His nanite armor remained his strongest suit.

However, it was already vastly superior to the original version inherited from his future self.

Many of the nanites were now constructed using Adamantium and other advanced materials acquired from Gaius's universe.

The suit was stronger.

More durable.

More capable.

Yet Tony wasn't satisfied.

He rarely was.

"With the shield technology," Tony said, studying the display, "I won't need directional projection anymore."

The armor hologram enlarged.

Several highlighted sections appeared across the model.

Tony pointed toward them.

"If we integrate the shield generators directly into the nanite network, I can have a full-body shield."

JARVIS responded immediately.

"Correct, sir."

A blue energy shell appeared around the holographic armor.

Tony nodded.

"It won't be exactly like Gaius's."

The projection shifted slightly.

Tony examined it carefully.

Gaius's shield functioned as an invisible force field surrounding his entire body.

Tony's proposed design was somewhat different.

The shield would closely conform to the armor itself.

Almost like a second suit layered over the first.

JARVIS analyzed the concept.

"However, there are concerns regarding energy consumption."

Tony raised an eyebrow.

"How bad?"

"Under normal combat conditions, negligible."

A brief pause followed.

"Under sustained heavy fire, energy demands will increase substantially."

Tony immediately understood.

That wasn't surprising.

Even his improved Arc Reactor, despite bordering on absurd from a technological perspective, still had limitations.

The reactor continuously generated new reactants.

Its endurance was effectively limitless.

However, energy output remained finite.

Only so much power could be released simultaneously.

JARVIS highlighted several portions of the armor.

"I recommend the addition of supplementary Arc Reactors."

Tony studied the proposal.

Thought about it.

Then slowly nodded.

"Not a bad idea."

The purpose wasn't increased endurance.

He already had more endurance than he realistically needed.

The goal was greater output.

More energy.

More power available for shields.

Weapons.

Flight systems.

Every onboard component.

The holographic armor updated.

Additional Arc Reactor housings appeared throughout the suit.

Tony carefully examined them.

Months ago, he never would have considered such extensive upgrades.

There simply hadn't been a need.

His enemies hadn't been dangerous enough.

His gaze shifted toward another hologram nearby.

A Covenant warship.

The massive vessel slowly rotated.

A reminder of exactly what humanity was facing.

An interstellar alien civilization determined to wipe out Humanity.

Tony stared at it for several seconds.

Then nodded.

"Yeah."

A grin appeared.

"I think more firepower sounds like a very good idea."

JARVIS responded instantly.

"I anticipated that conclusion, sir."

Tony smirked.

"Of course you did."

The response perfectly demonstrated how much smarter JARVIS had become after the hybrid architecture upgrade.

While Tony continued discussing armor upgrades, the laboratory door opened.

Halsey entered.

Normally, she would have joined the conversation.

Or at least acknowledged whatever project Tony was working on.

Instead, she walked directly toward her workstation.

Tony noticed immediately.

Something felt different.

Halsey rarely displayed emotion.

Yet today she seemed distracted.

Concerned.

Leaving the armor hologram behind, Tony walked over.

"What's up?"

Halsey looked up.

Recognizing him immediately.

She hesitated briefly.

Then answered.

"It's Cortana."

Tony raised an eyebrow.

His curiosity instantly increased.

"So?"

"My Smart AI."

"The one I created."

Tony nodded.

Over the past month, Halsey had mentioned Cortana several times.

Never in great detail.

But often enough that he knew she was important.

"What about her?"

Halsey paused.

Then answered.

"I can't contact her."

Tony blinked.

Momentarily surprised.

"You can't contact your own AI?"

"Cortana is currently deployed."

Halsey folded her arms.

"She's paired with a Spartan."

"Master Chief."

Tony repeated the title.

"The Master Chief?"

"Yes."

Halsey's tone remained calm.

"The best Spartan humanity has ever produced."

That immediately caught Tony's attention.

"The best Spartan?"

"Yes."

Halsey nodded.

"Master Chief is the most proficient."

"He excels in nearly every combat category."

"He's highly adaptable."

She paused briefly.

"And most importantly."

"He's lucky."

Tony's expression changed immediately.

"Lucky?"

The look on his face clearly communicated exactly what he thought about that explanation.

Halsey remained completely serious.

Tony pointed toward her.

"Hold on. You're telling me humanity's greatest soldier isn't the greatest because of his training, augmentations, or armor... but because he's lucky?"

"I didn't say that."

Halsey calmly corrected him.

"I said it was one of his greatest strengths."

Tony looked unconvinced.

"Luck isn't a strength."

"You'd be surprised."

Tony shook his head without hesitation.

"No. I really wouldn't."

"That's like telling me the secret to being a genius engineer is tripping over the right wrench."

Halsey didn't appear offended.

Instead, she explained.

"Master Chief has survived situations where every calculation suggested he should have died."

"He has succeeded where others failed."

"He has made correct decisions with incomplete information repeatedly."

Tony opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

"That's called skill."

Halsey shook her head.

"Not always."

Tony stared at her.

"You actually believe he's lucky."

"Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

Tony laughed.

"That's insane."

For the first time during the conversation, the corner of Halsey's mouth twitched slightly.

"Perhaps."

"But many people who have served alongside him would agree."

Tony leaned against the nearby table.

"So humanity's greatest super soldier is apparently blessed by the universe itself."

Halsey considered the description.

Then nodded.

"That is one way of describing it."

Tony laughed again and shook his head.

"I need to meet this guy."

A faint smile appeared on Halsey's face.

"Many people have said that."

The moment lasted only a few seconds.

Then Halsey's communicator suddenly rang.

She glanced downward.

The instant she saw the identifier, her faint smile disappeared.

Admiral Parangosky.

Tony noticed the change immediately.

The atmosphere shifted.

Halsey looked back toward him.

"I'm sorry."

"I need to take this."

Tony nodded.

"Go ahead."

Without another word, Halsey left the laboratory.

She stepped into the corridor and accepted the call.

A holographic image of Admiral Parangosky appeared before her.

The conversation was brief.

Direct.

Professional.

Neither wasted time.

Several minutes later, the call ended.

When Halsey returned to the workshop, Tony immediately noticed the difference.

Whatever Parangosky had said, it had clearly affected her.

"What happened?"

Halsey looked at him briefly.

Then answered.

"Commander Osman will explain it later."

Tony raised an eyebrow.

"That serious?"

Halsey nodded.

"It concerns everyone."

"And it's better if she tells all of you at the same time."

Tony became silent.

That alone told him everything he needed to know.

This wasn't routine ONI business.

Nor was it something insignificant.

Whatever had happened was important enough to involve everyone.

After a moment, he simply nodded.

"Alright."

He didn't press further.

There was no point.

If Osman was going to explain later, he would hear it then.

The workshop gradually grew quiet.

Halsey returned to her workstation.

Yet her attention was no longer focused on research.

The simulations.

The hybrid architecture.

Cortana.

All of it faded into the background.

Instead, Parangosky's message continued replaying in her mind.
