Chapter 234 - Chapter 232 — Silence That Answers

Chapter 232 — Silence That Answers

The Oath of Rectitude slipped out of the Warp without resistance.

There was no shake. No warning. One moment, the ship was surrounded by the shifting, unreal currents of the Immaterium. The next, it was back in real space, steady and prepared

Stars returned.

Cold. Clear. Fixed in place.

Ahead of them, the system came into view.

Varrak Prime.

It hung there, large and heavy, its surface hidden beneath thick layers of industry and atmosphere. Around it, smaller bodies moved in quiet orbits, each one part of a system that should have been alive with activity.

But something about it felt… wrong.

Not empty.

Controlled.

Inside the ship, nothing changed in appearance. The hum of systems remained steady. Crew moved as they always did. Orders were followed without delay.

But in the control room, attention had already shifted.

Gaius stood at the center, still and composed.

A serf stepped forward and began the report.

"My lord," he said, voice steady, "we have arrived at Varrak Prime system."

Gaius did not respond. He did not need to.

The serf continued.

"Varrak Prime. Hive world. Dense population. Current source of unrest."

The display shifted, showing the planet in greater detail.

"Multiple hive cities. Civil conflict confirmed across several sectors."

The image adjusted again.

"Kharon. Forge moon in low orbit."

A smaller body appeared beside the main world.

"Weapons production facility. Output has recently been diverted from standard distribution."

There was a brief pause.

"Destination unknown."

Another shift.

"Helior. Ice world."

A frozen sphere appeared on the display.

"Minimal infrastructure. However, a military presence has been confirmed."

The serf hesitated slightly before continuing.

"Conditions are extreme. Sustained habitation is… unlikely without heavy support."

Another change.

"The Black Halo. Dead world at the edge of the system."

The image darkened.

"Warp distortion detected. This location is the source of abnormal signals."

The room remained quiet.

Then the final line came.

"No distress calls have left the system in several weeks."

That was the most important part.

Gaius listened once.

That was enough.

He did not ask for clarification. He did not repeat anything.

Everything had already been understood.

At the edge of his vision, something else remained active.

The Multiversal Chat.

The group stood off to the side within it, watching, listening intently. Though unseen by anyone outside the system, their presence was clear to each other, real enough to move, to react.

Tony was the first to speak, his gaze sweeping across the view.

"The scale of this place…" he said. "It's something else

There was no fear in his tone. Just observation, measured and precise.

Saeko stepped slightly forward within the projection, her attention fixed elsewhere.

"That ice world," she said, focusing on Helior. "Do people actually live there?"

Mindy reacted immediately, her expression tightening.

"Live there?" she said. "That's… that's winter all the time, right?"

She paused, glancing at it again before adding more quietly,

"I don't think I could handle that."

Naruto let out a short laugh at first, but it faded as the thought settled.

"…yeah," he admitted after a moment. "That sounds rough."

Even he could picture it now, endless cold, no warmth, no relief.

Diana's voice followed, calm but grounded.

"They would have to adapt," she said. "But even then… that kind of life isn't easy."

Tanya remained still for a few seconds longer than the others. Her posture was composed, her expression unreadable as she studied the projection.

When she finally spoke, her voice was measured.

"Not just that world," she said. "All of them."

Her gaze had already shifted.

To Varrak Prime.

A hive world.

Dense. Controlled. Overcrowded beyond reason.

She didn't need to explain further.

The implication was already there.

Gaius gave no response.

He simply raised his hand slightly.

"Open all channels to Varrak Prime."

The order was calm. Immediate.

"Yes, my lord."

The control room moved at once.

This was not a normal transmission.

The Oath of Rectitude did not simply send a signal.

It took control.

Across the system, communications began to change.

Civilian networks flickered.

Military vox channels cut out and reconnected.

Orbital relays were overridden.

Every active frequency was seized.

Devices across Varrak Prime responded without permission.

Screens turned on.

Speakers activated.

Signals forced their way through interference and noise.

At the same time, something else was sent with the message.

Imperial command codes.

Clear.

Recognizable.

Authority markers tied to the highest levels of the Imperium.

Only two stood above them.

The Emperor.

And Guilliman.

Anyone loyal would know.

Anyone trained would understand.

At the same time, the system's internal communication began to struggle.

Signals overlapped.

Channels interfered.

Coordination became harder.

Before anyone could respond,

They were already disrupted.

Then Gaius spoke.

His voice moved through the system, carried across every channel.

"This is the Praetor of the Imperium."

There was no force behind it.

No raised tone.

Just clarity.

"By authority of the Emperor, all forces stand down."

A pause.

"Identify your command."

That was all.

On Varrak Prime,

everything stopped.

In the lower hive streets, crowds had been moving.

People shouting.

Arguing.

Gathering in numbers.

Then the voice came through.

Loud.

Clear.

Everywhere.

People stopped mid-step.

They looked around.

"Who said that?"

"Where is that coming from?"

Some pointed upward.

Others checked devices that had suddenly activated.

"It's from orbit," someone said.

"That's an Imperial signal…"

Not everyone believed it.

Some frowned.

Others grew quiet.

The shouting began to fade.

Not because of fear.

Because of uncertainty.

In the shrine districts, the effect was different.

Inside large cathedrals, priests stood before gathered crowds.

Words of faith filled the space.

Then the message cut through it.

Speakers carried it across the halls.

The priests stopped.

Not slowly.

Immediately.

One of them turned to another.

"That is an Imperial command," he said quietly.

The other priest frowned.

"Then why wasn't it answered?"

The question stayed in the air.

Around them, people began to whisper.

At military checkpoints, reactions came faster.

Soldiers tightened their grip on weapons.

Officers turned to their consoles.

"Check that signal," one said.

"It's valid," another replied after a moment. "Command codes confirmed."

That changed everything.

Protocol was clear.

They were supposed to respond.

But no order came from above.

One officer hesitated.

His eyes moved between the display and his men.

"Hold position," he said finally.

"Do not respond yet."

The soldiers obeyed.

But the tension remained.

In upper hive command centers, the situation repeated.

Screens showed the same message.

The same authority.

One officer spoke.

"If this is real, we are required to answer."

Another shook his head.

"Wait for direction from the Spire."

No one moved first.

No one wanted to be the one who acted without approval.

So they waited.

At the center of the hive, the Palace Spire received the message clearly.

There was no confusion here.

No hesitation.

Orders had already been given before the message even arrived.

No reply was sent.

In the lower hive, the message came through weaker.

Distorted.

But still clear enough.

Some ignored it.

Some looked uneasy.

Most didn't fully understand.

But they felt something change.

The air itself seemed different.

Like something had shifted above them.

Back on the Oath of Rectitude,

time passed.

Ten seconds.

No reply.

No command identified.

No acknowledgment.

The control room remained silent.

No one spoke.

All eyes turned to Gaius.

He did not react.

He had already expected this.

The silence was not empty.

It was an answer.

Behind him, the Multiversal Chat continued to watch.

Naruto frowned.

"…they're not answering," he said.

Mindy crossed her arms slightly.

"That's weird," she said. "If it's real, why wouldn't they respond?"

Tony didn't answer immediately.

He was looking at the situation differently.

"That's not confusion," he said after a moment.

"That's control."

Saeko nodded slowly.

"They're choosing not to respond."

Diana's expression hardened slightly.

"Which means whoever is in charge…" she said, then stopped.

She didn't need to finish.

Tanya did.

"…is not following Imperial authority," she said.

The conclusion settled over them.

Gaius spoke again, his tone steady.

"Mark command centers and primary signal sources."

"Yes, my lord."

The system responded immediately.

Across the display, points began to appear, locations tied to active signals and areas of coordination. As more data came in, a pattern started to form.

This wasn't random activity.

It was organized. Controlled. Deliberate.

Gaius looked at the display.

He did not rush.

He did not speak further.

The situation had already moved past the point of uncertainty.

This was no longer a civil war that had lost direction.

This was something else.

Something that had taken control and was holding it.

And it had chosen not to answer.

The ship remained in orbit.
