Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Orientation and First Lessons

The morning bell rang again, insistent and commanding, signaling the start of the official day at Kuoh Academy. Christopher Thomas Green stood at the edge of the courtyard, adjusting the strap of his schoolbag. He had spent the past few hours observing, cataloging, and—naturally—making the occasional mental joke about the chaos of high school life.

"Humans are funny," he muttered under his breath. "So much noise, so little attention to the currents of energy under their feet. Delightful."

He didn't have long to contemplate the irony. Rias Gremory had already arrived, gliding across the courtyard with her usual combination of grace and authority. Her crimson hair shone like fire in the morning sun, and her eyes, both sharp and warm, scanned the crowd before landing on Christopher.

"You're punctual," Christopher said with a grin as she approached. "I like that. Most people stumble into first-day orientation looking like they just survived a minor apocalypse."

Rias's lips curved in the faintest smile. "Observation is your specialty, isn't it?"

Christopher bowed slightly, playful but polite. "Among other things." He gestured toward the students filtering into the main hall. "Shall we see what structured chaos looks like inside?"

She inclined her head, and they walked together toward the building. Along the way, Christopher noted subtle magical auras flickering around certain students. A slight shimmer in the air, the faint tension in footsteps, the invisible tug of supernatural energy—it all spoke to him. This was a world alive with magic, power, and danger, yet also fragile and structured in ways only the observant could read.

Inside the hall, the walls were lined with polished wood, and the air smelled faintly of old books and floor wax. A banner overhead read: "Welcome New Students to Kuoh Academy." Christopher could feel the excitement, the nerves, and the hidden fears of everyone present. It was a microcosm of the wider supernatural world, all compressed into one high school.

"First lesson," Christopher whispered to himself with a grin. "Survive orientation. Catalog energy currents. Make a few friends. Subtly impress someone or two. Easy."

Rias led him to a small group of students sitting in the front row, including Issei Hyoudou, still adjusting to the overwhelming sensations of this new world, and Asia Argento, who waved cheerfully as they approached.

"Christopher, this is your first introduction to classmates who are… more aware than ordinary humans," Rias explained. "You'll learn their abilities, their tendencies, and their… potential."

Christopher raised an eyebrow, smirking faintly. "Potential, huh? I like that word. Full of surprises, I hope. No boring ones."

Issei looked nervously at Christopher. "You… you know about that stuff already?"

Christopher chuckled softly. "Observation, Issei. That's all. I notice patterns, subtle cues, little threads in the air that tell me what's coming next. You'll see it yourself soon enough."

Asia tilted her head, curious. "You're… different from everyone else. Calm and funny, not panicked."

"That's the plan," Christopher replied lightly. "Humor and calm—my personal brand of diplomacy. Works better than yelling or flailing."

As the orientation began, the headmaster's voice echoed through the hall. Christopher observed the students' reactions—some excited, some nervous, some skeptical—and cataloged them all silently. His mind worked faster than his words could ever catch up, analyzing energy flows, interpersonal connections, and potential threats or allies.

By the time the session moved to the supernatural curriculum, Christopher was already formulating a mental map of the school's power dynamics. Devils, angels, fallen angels, and hybrids—all present, all subtly interacting with each other. He could feel the tension, the hierarchy, and even the faint pulse of hidden rivalries forming in the room.

"Interesting," he muttered under his breath. "High school politics… magnified by magic, power, and hidden agendas. Delightful complexity."

After the lecture, Christopher found himself in the courtyard again. Issei lingered near him, looking both eager and nervous.

"So… you think I can survive this?" Issei asked. "I mean… I've never even touched a supernatural duel before."

Christopher grinned. "You will. But don't rush it. Observation first. Mistakes second. Learning third. And humor… always humor. That keeps people alive in more ways than one."

Asia joined them, bouncing lightly on her heels. "I like him!" she said suddenly, pointing at Christopher. "He's funny and… calm. I trust him."

Christopher bowed slightly. "Thank you, Asia. I try. Humor is my specialty, after all. And careful observation keeps me alive."

Koneko, standing nearby, merely tilted her head, eyes narrowed. Christopher winked at her. "Patient. Calm. Observant. No harm done yet. Trust me… eventually, it'll work."

By midday, the first supernatural incident occurred. A small, rogue energy fluctuation erupted near the gym—just enough to rattle the students. Christopher noticed immediately, walking calmly toward the source while everyone else panicked.

Inside, he found a small group of new students experimenting with powers without control, sparks flying dangerously. Christopher sighed softly. "Observe, don't panic… humor optional," he muttered, stepping forward and subtly redirecting energy with small gestures and words. Within moments, the situation calmed. No injuries. No chaos—except the shocked awe of everyone watching.

"Whoa," Issei breathed. "You… you just fixed that?"

Christopher grinned faintly, brushing his jacket. "Observation and calm. And maybe a little charm. Works every time."

Asia clapped softly. "You're amazing!"

Koneko only tilted her head, still skeptical, but her aura relaxed slightly. Christopher filed her reaction away: trust slowly building.

Rias appeared moments later, her red hair catching the sun. "Well done," she said softly. "You've shown restraint and awareness… exactly what I hoped for."

Christopher bowed slightly, still grinning. "Thank you. Calm, observant, and humorous… my personal brand of heroism."

Rias's lips curved faintly, amused. "Perhaps we'll see how far that brand carries you."

Christopher's eyes flicked toward the courtyard, toward the students bustling, laughing, and watching him with fascination. This world was chaotic, unpredictable, and alive. Perfect.

"This," he muttered quietly to himself, "is going to be fun."
