Chapter 10 - Golden Cage

The engagement venue buzzed with excitement as both families gathered for the long-awaited ceremony. The grand ballroom glittered with thousands of tiny lights reflecting off crystal chandeliers, while waiters circulated with trays of champagne and hors d'oeuvres. After hours of dancing, laughter, and celebration, the moment everyone had been waiting for finally arrived - the ring exchange ceremony.

Sofia stood stiffly beside Davide on the elevated stage, her forced smile not reaching her eyes. The ornate engagement ring Davide had chosen glinted under the spotlight - a gaudy three-carat diamond surrounded by smaller stones that caught the light with every movement. Davide beamed with pride, his chest puffed out as he admired his fiancée, completely oblivious to the misery etched across her delicate features.

As the officiant gestured for them to begin the ring exchange, Davide took Sofia's left hand tenderly in his own. His fingers trembled slightly - not from nerves, but from the thrill of finally claiming what he considered his property. The diamond slid smoothly onto Sofia's finger, its weight feeling like a shackle rather than a promise. Sofia forced herself not to recoil as Davide's sweaty palm pressed against hers.

Just as Sofia reached for Davide's ring, ready to perform her part in this charade, a deafening gunshot shattered the moment. The explosive sound echoed through the ballroom, causing Sofia to drop the ring in shock. It clattered against the hardwood stage before rolling away into the shadows. A collective gasp rose from the crowd as all heads swiveled toward the entrance.

A squadron of black-clad security personnel stormed through the double doors, their assault rifles raised and ready. The sea of guests instinctively parted like the Red Sea before Moses, creating a wide path down the center of the ballroom. The armed men took up defensive positions along the walls, their cold, calculating eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of threat.

Then, from between the wall of bodyguards, a commanding figure emerged. His custom Italian leather shoes clicked ominously against the marble floor with each deliberate step. The perfectly tailored black suit hugged his broad shoulders and tapered waist, the fabric so expensive it seemed to absorb rather than reflect light. His chiseled jawline and piercing gaze immediately commanded attention and respect.

"Leonardo Bruno!" The name rippled through the crowd in hushed, fearful whispers. The notoriously reclusive billionaire's sudden appearance at such a private event sent shock waves through the elite gathering. Though many present considered themselves powerful, they all paled in comparison to the Bruno family's influence and reach.

Every eye in the room remained fixed on Leonardo in fearful fascination, but his intense gaze locked onto one person alone - Sofia. The moment their eyes met, Sofia felt her breath catch in her throat. There was something terrifyingly familiar about those dark eyes that made her pulse race, though she couldn't place why.

With slow, measured steps that echoed through the now-silent ballroom, Leonardo ascended the stage. His eyes flickered briefly toward Davide, taking in the younger man's stunned expression, before returning with laser focus to Sofia. When his gaze dropped to her left hand, noticing the glittering engagement ring now adorning her finger, his expression darkened dangerously.

In one swift, violent motion, Leonardo seized Sofia's wrist. His grip was like iron, unyielding despite her immediate struggle. With a sharp twist, he wrenched the ring from her finger, ignoring her gasp of pain. Without hesitation, he hurled the heavy platinum band directly at Davide's face with enough force to split the skin above his cheekbone.

The ring struck its target with surgical precision. Davide staggered back a step, his hand flying to his face as a thin trickle of blood began seeping from the wound. The crowd collectively winced at the display of violence, but no one dared intervene. They all knew better than to cross Leonardo Bruno.

Sofia's momentary shock gave way to outrage. Though she harbored no affection for Davide, seeing him treated so brutally ignited her temper. "What the hell do you think you're doing?" she demanded, her voice shaking with anger. She rushed forward to tend to Davide's injury, her medical instincts overriding her fear. "Who do you think you are?"

Leonardo's reaction was instantaneous. He grabbed Sofia's arm in an unbreakable grip, yanking her away from Davide with enough force to make her stumble. "Forget him," he growled, his voice dripping with menace. "You should be far more concerned about yourself right now." Before she could protest further, Leonardo effortlessly swept her into his arms, carrying her like a prize from the stage.

The crowd remained frozen in place, not a single guest daring to intervene against the city's most feared and powerful tycoon. Sofia struggled violently in his embrace, kicking against his chest, but Leonardo's grip might as well have been forged from steel for all the effect her resistance had.

"Is this how you react to the first taste of punishment?" Leonardo murmured, his breath chilling against her ear as he carried her through the silent crowd. "You haven't even begun to understand what true suffering means." His ominous words sent an involuntary shiver down Sofia's spine.

Outside the venue, a convoy of armored black limousines idled ominously at the curb. Leonardo carried Sofia to the centermost vehicle, where a uniformed chauffeur held the door open expectantly. He deposited her onto the plush leather seats while maintaining his bruising grip on her wrist. The door slammed shut with finality as the motorcade peeled away from the curb, tires screeching against the pavement.

Inside the moving limousine, Sofia finally found her voice again. "Let me go this instant!" she demanded, her voice trembling with outrage. She tugged futilely against his unrelenting hold. "Where are you taking me? At least have the decency to put me down properly!"

Leonardo's response was glacial in its indifference. "No," he stated simply, his grip tightening fractionally to emphasize his point. "You'll learn to accept my touch, just as you'll learn to accept everything else I choose to give you."

"You can't possibly mean to keep carrying me around like some... some trophy forever!" Sofia spat, her eyes blazing with defiance despite the fear coiling in her stomach.

"Precisely," Leonardo confirmed, his tone leaving no room for argument. He adjusted his hold, pulling her closer until she could feel the heat radiating from his body. "You belong to me now, in every sense of the word."

"But why?" Sofia demanded, her voice cracking with emotion. She hated how small she sounded, how powerless she felt in his presence. "What possible reason could you have for-"

"Silence!" Leonardo's sudden roar made Sofia flinch violently. The dangerous glint in his eyes promised retribution should she continue testing his patience. "Another word and I'll throw you from this moving vehicle without hesitation. Do I make myself clear?"

The remainder of the ride passed in tense silence, the only sound the hum of the powerful engine and the occasional rustle of fabric as Sofia shifted uncomfortably in Leonardo's lap. The limousine eventually turned onto a private access road, passing through imposing iron gates that swung open automatically at their approach.

They arrived at a secluded airfield where Leonardo's personal jet waited, its engines already humming in preparation for departure. The sleek black aircraft bore no markings save for a subtle "VB" monogram near the door - Vinci-Bruno Enterprises. Leonardo carried Sofia up the retractable stairs, ignoring her renewed struggles as the flight attendant secured the cabin door behind them.

As the plane taxied onto the runway, Sofia finally found her voice again. "Where are you taking me?" she asked softly, her earlier defiance tempered by exhaustion and growing fear.

Leonardo didn't look at her as he answered, his gaze fixed on the window as the plane accelerated down the runway. "Sorrento," he replied casually, as if discussing nothing more consequential than the weather.

The single word drained all color from Sofia's face, resurrecting unbearable memories she had tried desperately to suppress. Her breath came in short, panicked gasps as images from that terrible night flashed through her mind - the music, the drinks, the hands she couldn't see but could still feel on her skin...

Noticing her distress, Leonardo's mouth twisted into a cruel smirk. "Having flashbacks already?" he taunted, his fingers digging into her thigh painfully. His mind whispered darker thoughts he didn't voice: Just wait until I make you relive every moment in excruciating detail.

The private jet touched down at Dabolim Airport several hours later, where another convoy of black SUVs waited on the tarmac. Leonardo carried Sofia from the plane directly to the lead vehicle, his grip unrelenting despite her exhausted protests. The motorcade sped along winding coastal roads, the salty sea air mixing with the scent of expensive leather and Leonardo's cologne.

They eventually turned onto a private drive lined with palm trees, stopping before towering iron gates adorned with the same "VB" monogram. The illuminated sign "Villa Bruno" glowed ominously in the gathering dusk, the letters crafted from what appeared to be genuine diamonds embedded in the wrought iron.

Leonardo carried his captive through the magnificent foyer, watching with satisfaction as Sofia gaped at the opulence surrounding them. The vaulted ceilings, the priceless artwork, the marble floors polished to a mirror shine - it was a palace fit for a king.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Leonardo murmured, his breath warm against her ear.

Sofia couldn't help but nod. "Yes," she admitted softly. "Breathtaking."

Leonardo's grip tightened painfully. "This isn't a villa," he corrected, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "It's a gilded prison - and your permanent residence."

Sofia's involuntary shudder seemed to please him immensely. He carried her up the sweeping staircase, his footsteps echoing through the cavernous space. At the end of a long hallway, he kicked open a set of double doors to reveal a lavish bedroom suite. The enormous four-poster bed dominated the space, its silk canopy billowing gently in the sea breeze from the open balcony doors.

Without ceremony, Leonardo flung Sofia onto the mattress. She immediately scrambled backward until her back hit the headboard, her wide eyes fixed on him with undisguised terror.

"Stay here until I return," he ordered, already turning toward the door.

Sofia found her voice. "When will that be?" she asked, hating how small she sounded.

Leonardo paused at the threshold, glancing back over his shoulder with a shrug that was deliberately casual. "Today, tomorrow, never," he replied coolly. "It's not your concern."

As the door clicked shut behind him, Sofia heard the distinct sound of an electronic lock engaging. She launched herself from the bed, beating her fists against the solid wood until they ached. "Let me out!" she screamed, her voice growing hoarse with effort. "Please! You can't do this!"

When no response came, Sofia slid down the door in defeat, her tears soaking the expensive carpet beneath her. Hours passed in miserable silence before exhaustion finally claimed her, leaving her curled in a pitiful heap on the floor.

Rihana sat nervously in her examination hall, attempting to focus on her test despite Sofia's unexplained absence. The professor had marked Sofia as "excused" due to her engagement festivities, but Rihana knew the truth - her best friend would never willingly miss an important exam. Something was terribly wrong.

As Rihana puzzled over a difficult question, the classroom door burst open with enough force to slam against the wall. A team of masked operatives stormed in, their black tactical gear and raised weapons sending students scrambling under their desks in terror. The professor's protests died in his throat when the lead intruder pressed a gun to his temple.

The commander - distinguishable by the red insignia on his body armor - scanned the room with clinical efficiency before his gaze locked onto Rihana. He strode directly to her desk, his combat boots thudding ominously against the tiled floor.

"Scared?" he asked unnecessarily, his voice distorted by the mask covering the lower half of his face. When Rihana refused to answer, he leaned down until they were eye-to-eye. "Don't worry... I won't hurt you. As long as you come quietly."

Rihana shook her head violently, pressing herself back into her chair. "No! I'm not going anywhere with you!"

The commander sighed dramatically before grabbing Rihana's arm and yanking her to her feet. When she continued to resist, he simply tossed her over his shoulder like a sack of grain, ignoring her screams and pounding fists against his back.

The operatives formed a protective diamond formation around their leader as he carried Rihana from the building. Students and faculty alike pressed themselves against the walls, too terrified to intervene as Rihana was hauled away.

Outside, a blacked-out SUV idled at the curb, its engine running. The commander dumped Rihana unceremoniously into the backseat before climbing in beside her. The vehicle peeled away before the door even closed, merging seamlessly into traffic.

"Who are you?" Rihana demanded, her voice shaking with equal parts fear and rage. "Where are you taking me?"

The commander removed his mask, revealing a handsome but cruel face. "Silence," he snapped, backhanding her across the mouth with enough force to split her lip. "This gun has six bullets. I won't hesitate to empty them all into that pretty little mouth of yours."

Rihana shrank into the corner, tasting blood on her lips. The rest of the ride passed in terrified silence as the SUV wound through increasingly deserted roads before arriving at a private airfield.

The commander dragged Rihana from the vehicle and up the stairs of a waiting jet, shoving her into a plush leather seat. "Try anything stupid," he warned, buckling her seatbelt with unnecessary force, "and I'll toss you from this plane without a parachute."

Hours later, after an interminable flight spent in terrified silence, the jet touched down in Sorrento. Another black SUV waited on the tarmac, identical to the first. Rihana was shoved inside without ceremony, the door slamming shut with finality behind her.

The vehicle wound along coastal roads before turning onto a private drive lined with palm trees. Towering iron gates swung open automatically as they approached, revealing the sprawling Villa Bruno in all its intimidating glory.

The commander hauled Rihana inside and up a sweeping staircase before throwing her into a dark room. The last thing she saw before the door slammed shut was his cruel smirk as he flipped the light switch off, plunging her into complete darkness.

Rihana's childhood phobia of the dark came roaring back with a vengeance. She screamed until her voice gave out, beating her fists against the door until they bled. When no one came, she eventually collapsed in a sobbing heap in the corner, her mind racing with terrible possibilities.

At the same time, in his private study at Villa Bruno...

Leonardo sat behind an imposing mahogany desk, reviewing security footage on a bank of monitors. The door opened without knocking, admitting Nick and Edward, his most trusted lieutenants.

Nick massaged his temples as he dropped into one of the leather chairs opposite Leonardo. "The girl has been secured," he reported, his voice tight with irritation. "Screamed the whole damn way here. Gave me a splitting headache."

Leonardo didn't look up from the screens. "And the investigation from that night?" he asked, his fingers steepled beneath his chin.

Edward hesitated before answering. "Still compiling evidence," he admitted. "But sir... with all due respect, do you truly believe they conspired against you? Neither Sofia nor Rihana seem the type to-"

"Appearances deceive," Leonardo interrupted coldly, finally looking up. His dark eyes burned with barely restrained fury. "Have the background checks finished?"

Edward nodded reluctantly. "Nothing unusual in either of their histories. No criminal connections, no suspicious financial transactions. Just two ordinary college students from what we can tell."

Leonardo's jaw tightened. "Dig deeper," he ordered. "Everyone has secrets. Find theirs."

As his lieutenants departed, Leonardo turned his attention back to the security monitors, zooming in on Sofia's sleeping form. His fingers traced the edge of the screen almost tenderly before clenching into a fist.

Flashback - One Week Earlier:

The Elite Club debacle replayed in Leonardo's mind like a broken record. He'd gone alone to what should have been a simple business meeting, only to find his drink spiked with an unknown substance. The world had blurred at the edges, his thoughts turning sluggish and disjointed. He remembered staggering to a nearby hotel, barely making it to a room before collapsing.

When he'd woken the next morning, the scene had been straight from a nightmare. His clothes were scattered across the floor, the bed sheets tangled and stained. Most disturbingly, his body carried the unmistakable evidence of intimate contact, though his drug-addled mind retained only fragmented impressions - smooth skin beneath his fingers, the scent of jasmine and salt, a voice whispering words he couldn't quite recall.

The forensic team had found nothing - no fingerprints, no DNA evidence beyond his own, no record of who might have accessed his room. It was as if his mysterious companion had been a ghost.

But Leonardo knew better. Someone had planned this. Someone had targeted him deliberately. And when he'd seen security footage placing Sofia and Rihana at the Elite Club that same night, the pieces had fallen into place.

Now, as he watched Sofia toss fitfully in her sleep on the monitor, Leonardo's lips curled into a humorless smile. He would get to the truth, no matter what it took. And if these girls were responsible for humiliating him, they would learn firsthand why no one crossed Leonardo Bruno and lived to tell the tale.

The game had only just begun.
