The forest was unusually quiet that morning.
Not peaceful.
Quiet.
There was a difference.
A thin layer of mist drifted between the ancient trees, curling around their roots and disappearing slowly beneath the dense canopy. The air was cool and damp, carrying the earthy smell of wet moss, leaves, and the faint remains of scorched wood from the fire they had built the previous night.
Alex sat with his back against the trunk of a large tree, his arms resting loosely across his knees as he watched the clearing in front of him.
Across the open patch of forest, Riolu and Charcadet stood facing one another.
Both were breathing heavily.
Both were exhausted.
And neither looked willing to stop.
Alex watched them for a few seconds before speaking.
"Again."
His voice wasn't loud, but there was enough authority behind it that both Pokémon immediately understood.
Riolu lowered his stance.
Charcadet's flames flickered around his shoulders.
For a brief moment, neither moved.
Then Riolu exploded forward.
His feet barely seemed to touch the ground as he rushed across the clearing, aura gathering around his paw until it began to glow with concentrated blue-white energy.
Force Palm
Riolu's palm collided with Charcadet's raised arm.
The impact produced a sharp burst of energy that echoed through the trees.
Charcadet grunted as the force pushed him backward, his feet scraping through the layer of dead leaves covering the ground. For a moment, it looked as though he might fall.
He didn't.
Instead, Charcadet dug his feet into the dirt and forced himself to stop.
His eyes narrowed.
Then he attacked.
His fist ignited almost instantly, flames wrapping around his arm as he rushed forward.
Fire Punch
Charcadet swung toward Riolu's shoulder.
Riolu twisted his body at the last possible moment.
The flaming fist passed inches from him.
Before Charcadet could recover, Riolu moved.
A burst of speed carried him around Charcadet's side.
Quick Attack
Riolu struck him in the ribs and immediately jumped backward.
Both Pokémon landed several feet apart.
For a moment, they simply stared at each other.
Alex's expression softened.
"Nice."
He stood slightly, resting one hand against the tree behind him.
"You're starting to read each other's movements."
Riolu nodded proudly.
Charcadet's flames flickered with excitement.
Neither Pokémon had noticed it yet, but their movements were becoming more coordinated every day. They were learning how the other fought, learning when to attack and when to retreat, learning how to recognize the smallest change in posture before a move was launched.
They weren't simply becoming stronger.
They were learning to fight together.
Charcadet suddenly lowered his stance.
Alex's attention immediately returned to him.
Something about his posture was different.
His arms were positioned lower than before, his fingers extended slightly, his entire body appearing more tense.
Alex frowned.
"Charcadet?"
The little Pokémon didn't answer.
He was concentrating.
The flames surrounding his hands began to change.
A strange darkness appeared between his fingers.
At first it was little more than a faint shadow.
Then it grew.
Dark energy began swirling around his hand, twisting into jagged strands that seemed almost alive.
Alex slowly stood.
"What are you..."
Charcadet suddenly roared.
He swung his arm through the air.
The dark energy followed the movement, forming a sharp crescent that tore through the clearing.
It struck the trunk of a nearby tree.
CRACK!
The bark split apart.
A deep, blackened gash was left behind, smoke curling from the damaged wood.
Alex stared.
Charcadet stared too.
The little Pokémon slowly looked down at his own hand, seemingly unable to understand what he had just done.
Alex's eyes widened.
"Was that..."
He looked toward the damaged tree.
Then back toward Charcadet.
"...Shadow Claw?"
Charcadet's eyes widened.
He looked at his hand again.
The realization slowly reached him.
He had learned a new move.
His flames suddenly flared with excitement.
Charcadet turned toward Alex, practically bursting with pride.
Alex couldn't stop the small grin that appeared on his face.
"Good job."
Charcadet smiled.
But Riolu had been watching.
And apparently, he wasn't about to let Charcadet have all the attention.
The Fighting-type stepped backward.
He closed his eyes.
His breathing slowed.
Alex noticed immediately.
"Riolu?"
The aura around Riolu began to gather.
At first, it was faint.
Then it became stronger.
Blue light flowed around his body, moving differently from the concentrated energy he normally used for Force Palm. Instead of gathering around one part of his body, the aura spread across him.
His muscles tightened.
His stance became sharper.
His entire body seemed to shimmer.
Alex watched carefully.
"That's interesting"
Riolu suddenly opened his eyes.
He moved.
A burst of speed sent him across the clearing.
His paw glowed with metallic energy.
"Metal Claw!"
The attack struck another tree.
The impact splintered the bark, sending pieces of wood flying across the clearing.
Riolu landed several feet away.
Alex stared at him.
Then realization hit.
"...Swords Dance."
Riolu turned around.
Alex smiled.
"You just boosted your strength."
Riolu looked at his paws before looking toward Charcadet.
Charcadet immediately began clapping, his flames flickering happily.
Riolu grinned.
Alex shook his head.
"You two..."
He couldn't help laughing quietly.
Every day, they were changing.
Every day, they were discovering something new.
But Alex also knew something they couldn't ignore.
Strength alone wasn't enough.
They still needed food.
They still needed water.
And they couldn't spend every day training until they collapsed.
"Alright," Alex said, reaching down for his belongings. "Training's done for now."
He picked up his handmade bone knife and secured it carefully.
Then he lifted the cloth sack he had been carrying.
"We need food and water."
Riolu immediately perked up.
Charcadet's flames flickered.
"Let's move."
They traveled deeper into the forest.
The trees became taller as they moved farther from their usual clearing, their enormous branches blocking much of the sunlight above them.
After some time, they heard it.
Water.
Alex followed the sound until they reached a narrow stream winding between the trees.
He crouched beside it and dipped his fingers into the water.
Cold.
Clear.
Flowing.
He looked upstream.
Nothing appeared unusual.
"Looks safe enough."
He moved aside.
"You first."
Riolu immediately knelt beside the stream and began drinking.
He drank so quickly that water splashed across his face.
Alex smiled.
"Slow down."
Riolu ignored him.
Charcadet eventually joined him, carefully drinking from the edge of the stream.
Alex waited until both Pokémon had finished before cupping his hands and drinking himself.
The cold water shocked him awake.
He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
"Much better."
He stood and looked deeper into the forest.
"Now..."
He glanced toward his companions.
"Food."
They followed a trail of berry bushes for several minutes.
Alex checked each plant carefully against the guidebook he had found with his belongings when he first woke in this world.
He had learned quickly that not every berry was safe.
Some were bitter.
Some were poisonous.
Others had strange effects that he still didn't completely understand.
So he checked everything before allowing either Pokémon to eat it.
Eventually, Riolu stopped beside a small bush.
He pointed excitedly.
"Oran Berries."
Alex crouched beside the bush.
"Good find."
They gathered several.
Charcadet picked one up and stared at it curiously.
Then an idea seemed to occur to him.
He held the berry near his flames.
Alex raised an eyebrow.
"You're not seriously..."
The berry began to roast.
A sweet smell filled the air.
Charcadet looked incredibly pleased with himself.
Alex stared at him.
Then at Riolu.
Riolu was already eating his own berry.
Alex sighed.
"Fine."
He sat down beneath a nearby tree.
"Just don't burn it."
Charcadet proudly continued roasting his berry.
Soon the three of them were sitting together beneath the canopy, eating their small meal.
It wasn't much.
But it was enough.
Alex looked at them quietly.
Two Pokémon who had once been frightened, wounded, and alone.
Now they sat beside him like they belonged there.
For some reason, that thought made his chest feel warm.
They were surviving.
Not comfortably.
Not easily.
But they were surviving.
And that mattered.
After they finished eating, the three rested beneath a large tree.
Riolu slowly leaned against Alex's side.
Alex glanced down at him.
"You getting comfortable?"
Riolu closed his eyes.
Alex smiled.
Across from them, Charcadet sat quietly, watching the sunlight pass through the branches overhead.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Alex finally broke the silence.
"Charcadet..."
The Fire-type looked toward him.
"You were hurt before we found you."
Charcadet's expression changed.
His eyes lowered.
Alex noticed immediately.
"I don't know what happened to you."
He paused.
"I don't know who did it."
His eyes moved toward the broken restraint still around Charcadet's ankle.
"But I know it wasn't right."
Charcadet remained silent.
Alex's voice became quieter.
"I don't know how to make any of that disappear."
He looked directly at him.
"But if you stay with me..."
His expression hardened with determination.
"...I'll make damn sure nobody ever touches you like that again."
Charcadet slowly raised his head.
His eyes met Alex's.
There was pain there.
The kind that didn't disappear simply because someone offered kindness.
But there was something else too.
Trust.
Slowly, Charcadet nodded.
Riolu opened his eyes.
He reached over and placed one paw gently against Alex's hand.
Alex looked down.
Then smiled.
