Chapter 112 - CHAPTER 103 – “The Umbra Gate”

(Dream Trial: Max, Day 1–30)

Location: Dream realm — The Silent Hollow

Max opened his eyes…

…and saw nothing.

No color. No sound. No ground. No sky.

Just black.

Then the whispers started.

"The quiet one… the one who watches. Hides. Waits. Thinks he's in control…"

He tried to summon shadows.

They refused.

He took a breath—and felt the air crawl down his throat like oil.

This wasn't a trial.

It was a dissection.

Day 2–4: The Hall of Eyes

Shapes began to move in the dark—monsters made of silence, dragging chains of forgotten memories. Their eyes were white voids, unblinking.

Max fought back with raw reflex.

Daggers of darkness. Shields of warped shade. Summoned beasts from his pulse.

But for every strike…

The monsters whispered truths.

"You're only strong when no one looks."

"You're not the leader. You're the leftover."

"Even now, Grim still protects you."

He fought harder.

Until he screamed, "I don't need protecting!"

Day 5: The Guardian Arrives

A figure emerged.

Not monstrous.

Not loud.

Just a humanoid shadow—tall, thin, a permanent grin stretching across its hollow face. Wearing a crown of unlight.

Umbros, the Forlorn King of Night.

He studied Max with amusement.

"I watched. You fought. You bleed. But you're not ready."

"I'm stronger than I look," Max growled.

"So are nightmares."

Umbros waved a hand.

Max's power vanished.

Day 6–20: The Maze of Self

Without power. Without light. Without allies.

Max wandered.

A labyrinth of his own mind rose around him. Walls made of old memories. Regret. Moments where he let others speak. Let others shine. Never dared to become more.

"You see too much," Umbros whispered each night. "But you never act."

Max began to realize—

His gift wasn't just control over shadows.

It was understanding them.

He read people. Knew when to strike. When to vanish. When to wait.

Now, he began bending the maze. Reshaping shadows. Taming fear.

Day 21–29: The Mirror Beast

Max faced a creature shaped like him—taller, stronger, monstrous, cruel.

He didn't try to fight it.

He outthought it.

Used illusions. Traps. Echoes.

He let the creature attack him—and fed off its darkness.

Until the beast bowed.

Umbros clapped.

"Finally. You used your mind. Not just your fear."

Day 30: Still Not Enough

Umbros stood beside Max as they looked into a void filled with thousands of sleeping shadows.

"You passed. But barely. You still doubt. Still wait. You are no king of darkness yet."

"But I will be," Max said.

Umbros smirked.

"We'll see. For now… take this. A mark. A warning. And a promise."

Max returned with long, sweeping shadows coiling at his feet. His scythe burned with violet runes now—alive. Breathing.

But… unlike the others… his power felt unfinished. Restless. Growing.

Low Flare Tier — Umbra WardeninWaiting.

Outside, his breath fogged the air. The others were waking up. Grim's eyes were already open.

He nodded once at Max.

And Max finally smiled.
