Chapter 7 - chapter 7:Shadows of jealously

The forest around Raven's Hollow was still heavy with the lingering scent of battle, a faint undercurrent of tension threading through the cool morning air. Dawn's early light sifted through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor where the Blackclaw pack gathered. The wounds from the previous night's battle were beginning to heal, but the emotional scars were far less visible—and far more dangerous.

Emily stood quietly near the edge of the clearing, watching as the pack moved with practiced precision. Men and women she had come to know—warriors who had fought beside her and Luca—tended to one another's injuries with a mixture of tenderness and grim determination. The bond between them was undeniable, forged in blood and moonlight.

Yet, despite the collective relief, Emily felt a subtle but persistent prickling at the edges of her consciousness—like a shadow lurking just beyond the light.

It wasn't fear. It was something else.

She turned her gaze toward Luca, who stood at the center of the pack, issuing quiet commands and checking on his warriors. His amber eyes scanned the horizon, sharp and alert even in the relative calm. The weight of leadership pressed heavily on him, but he carried it with the stoic grace that had earned him the pack's unwavering loyalty.

Emily's heart clenched. For all his strength and pride, Luca's world was fraught with challenges she was only beginning to understand.

Her thoughts were interrupted by footsteps approaching—deliberate, confident, and cool. She turned to see Selene emerge from the tree line, her long dark hair pulled back tightly, revealing a face both beautiful and fierce. Selene's sharp green eyes locked onto Emily with a look that was impossible to mistake: guarded, wary, and simmering with something dangerously close to resentment.

Emily instinctively straightened, feeling the weight of Selene's gaze.

Selene's voice was smooth but edged with steel as she stepped forward. "Emily," she said, her tone neutral but layered with unspoken meaning. "We need to talk."

Emily glanced toward Luca, who had noticed the exchange and was now watching closely. Selene's presence was a ripple in the calm surface of the pack, a subtle warning of storms to come.

"Selene," Luca said, his voice steady but firm. "This isn't the time."

Selene met his gaze without flinching. "It's exactly the time. The pack deserves to know where its loyalties lie."

Emily's pulse quickened. She had heard whispers—rumors of Selene's fierce loyalty to the old ways, her distrust of outsiders, and something deeper: a jealousy she had not expected.

Luca's jaw tightened. "Emily is part of this pack."

Selene's eyes narrowed. "For now."

The tension between them was thick enough to taste. Emily felt the fragile thread of peace fray.

Selene's gaze hardened, the faintest curl of a smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. "For now," she repeated, voice low but venomous. "You may have fought alongside us, but that doesn't erase the fact that you're an outsider, Emily. Someone who stepped into our world uninvited and... untested."

Emily's eyes narrowed, but she kept her voice calm. "I didn't ask for this world, Selene. But I've earned my place in it. The pack accepted me after last night's battle. Or did you forget?"

Selene's green eyes flicked toward Luca, then back to Emily. "The pack is loyal to strength and tradition. Last night was survival. It doesn't mean they'll follow you blindly. Especially not when you wield powers none of us understand."

Luca's expression darkened. "You underestimate her. Emily has saved lives tonight. You, of all people, should respect that."

Selene's laugh was soft but bitter. "Respect isn't given, Luca. It's earned — and maintained. You forget that loyalty can shift like the wind."

Emily felt a sharp sting in her chest. The unspoken accusation was clear: her closeness to Luca was a threat — not just to Selene's ambitions, but to the very fabric of the Blackclaw pack.

Selene took a step closer to Emily, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You should be careful. Not everyone here sees you as a friend. Some of us have long memories... and long grudges."

Before anyone could respond, Luca's voice rang out, firm and commanding. "Enough."

Selene's eyes flashed once more, then she turned sharply on her heel. "This isn't over. Not by a long shot."

As her footsteps faded into the shadows of the forest, an uneasy silence settled over the clearing.

Emily met Luca's gaze, searching for reassurance.

He reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "Ignore her," he said quietly. "She's scared. And dangerous."

Emily swallowed hard. The battle outside was brutal, but this — the battle for trust, for belonging — was just beginning.
