I watched Felix hurry out of the room, his shoulders squared with false confidence. The sound of his footsteps faded down the hospital corridor, leaving us in a thick, anxious silence.
Arthur moved closer to me, his presence steady and reassuring. "Who exactly is this Uncle Dubois?" he murmured.
"The patriarch of the Dubois family in Clance," I whispered back. "From what I've heard, he rarely leaves his estate. For him to come here..."
"Must be significant," Arthur finished, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully.
Across the room, Caleb had pulled Fiona aside, his face tight with barely contained anger. Though they kept their voices low, the tension between them was unmistakable.
"We need to talk about what the doctor said," Caleb hissed, gripping her arm.
Fiona yanked herself free. "This isn't the time or place."
"When is it ever?" His jaw clenched. "The baby—"
"Is fine," she snapped. "And it's yours. Stop questioning me."
