Chapter 268: Two-Thirds Ambitious
Midgardia - Midheim - Huldra's Peak
On the surface, Bjorn, accompanied by a host of Great Company Wolf Lords, stood on the edge of a cliff, observing with a sense of novelty the Fabricator-class industrial ship gradually deploying in orbit.
In the howling wind, a torrent of living metal spewed from the industrial ship's belly, pouring down from low orbit. The silvery-grey liquid metal, upon contact with the mountainside, drove away the snow and ice, solidifying into a precise structural framework on the thick rock.
The chanting of the tech-adepts echoed through the mountains via vox-emitters. They operated their control terminals, guiding countless prefabricated components, carried by the living metal, into place like a swarm of returning metal bees. His gaze followed a melta-forge that was unfolding, the massive industrial module spewing orange-red flames, melting and reshaping the ancient rock layers of Midgardia into standardized prefabricated workshops. Each wave of the silver-bright metal was accompanied by the precise docking of hundreds of standard components.
And in the areas where the forging was complete, the microscopic structure of the living metal directly disintegrated. Under its own massive weight, it bonded even more tightly, eventually becoming an unremarkable support structure for bearing the industrial weight.
This was the treasure that the Dawnlight Sector had been concentrating on for all these years. It possessed a complete military-industrial system and a technician training system, capable of pushing an Imperial feral world into the standard Imperial industrial age in a short period of time. Its main purpose was to, in an extremely short time, create an industrial system that could export Astra Militarum and Astartes equipment and vehicles, and at the same time, provide supplies and component repairs for the Imperial Navy's ships.
The current limiting factor was the particularly troublesome training of technicians. Due to the existence of gods and monsters, the relevant training had to include a rather strict loyalty test. And this was with the Imperium having the technology to implant knowledge into the brain, which greatly saved the theoretical education time required for technician training.
The administrative personnel in the escort fleet would serve as the management unit with decision-making and administrative functions, to ensure the efficient operation of this industrial system.
Bjorn stood on the edge of the cliff, watching the mountainside being transformed into a terraced, composite military factory. Feeling the vibrations from the earth beneath his feet, his mood was somewhat complex. In the past, at the meetings led by the Wolf King, they had criticized Guilliman for forcibly linking other worlds, interfering in the internal affairs of the various Imperial departments, and expanding his own power.
Now, thinking back, those words seemed to still echo in the hall, but they had become incredibly distant. Now things seemed a little strange. Why were they building such a huge arsenal? Why were they building an astropathic relay station that could support the surrounding hundred sectors? Why were they establishing a talent export system with the Schola Progenium, and liaising with cold planets with environments as harsh as Fenris?
To expand their own power! Because the Primarchs had made a promise: as long as the sons of Russ could return to the scale of the Legion era, they would lead the sons of Russ to capture Magnus, torture the whereabouts of Leman Russ out of him, and then lead the pack to 'welcome back' their Primarch.
And what did they have to do to become strong? Link with other worlds, interfere in the internal affairs of the various Imperial departments, and expand their own power.
So ambitious!
No, wait! The Space Wolves did not have the ambitious political maneuvering ability of the Ultramarines. That middle part could be omitted. Two-thirds ambitious, then.
Bjorn thought to himself. As a ten-thousand-year-old little hater of Guilliman, he really didn't want the Space Wolves to one day be in the same boat as the Ultramarines. And with that thought, he felt much better. This was to welcome back Russ. This was for the Wolftime. It was not at all like the Ultramarines.
The construction machinery below the cliff let out a deafening roar as a melta-reactor was being hoisted into place. These resources, these weapons, these wolf-pups... they are all for finding Russ, for continuing to fight for the will of the Allfather under Russ's leadership, not for building some independent kingdom of their own. The stronger the Space Wolves, the closer Russ is to you!
"The mineral resources of the Fenris system are extremely rich, and there are also minerals with broad application prospects like frost-crystal. The future development potential is very high," Romulus said. In the slightly hostile gazes of the Wolf Lords, his and Logan's figures appeared in a flash of teleportation.
"Yes, Lord Romulus," Bjorn said, not knowing what to say, and simply saluted first. He then turned his gaze to Logan. "Is it settled?"
"It is," Logan nodded. After reaching a consensus with Arthur and Ramesses's banter, the Great Wolf's attitude had softened considerably. He was no longer opposed to the transformation of Fenris. Thinking he could learn a thing or two, he had chosen to liaise with Romulus on the specific matters.
Basically, it was Romulus talking, and then after each segment, he had to explain the specific function, and then stress, 'I have no intention of manipulating the Space Wolves, and you do not need to give me anything in return. We are simply working towards a common goal.'
In short, the Dawnbreakers had been extremely candid. Now, it was the Fenrisians who were lacking. Just a few million people, and even with Midgardia, just under ten million. It was barely enough to support a small city. How could they possibly man a forge-city, a large starport, and a communication platform?
Romulus's proposal was for the Wolves to first send their Astartes for training. At least as the masters of Fenris, they had to understand. As for talent, if they trusted the Dawnbreakers, they could provide it. If they wanted to do it themselves, that was fine too. See, they've already thought of everything for you.
Logan was getting more and more embarrassed the more they talked. Are you here to do charity?
Of course they were. The Fenris system, as a salient of the Segmentum Solar, and at the intersection of the Segmentum Obscurus and the Ultima Segmentum, had an exceptionally advantageous geographical location. The various Chaos warbands visited every other day. How could they not keep a close eye on it? The purpose of this trip was originally to unleash the Wolves. And they hadn't signed the Codex Astartes anyway, right?
Romulus first looked at Bjorn, then at the other Wolf members. Hmm, the words at the feast were still somewhat useful. Looking at those bearded faces, he couldn't help but show an optimistic smile. See, at least now these wolves would choose to give him a proper salute when they saw him. At least the hatred was no longer directed at him as an individual.
"Yes, Logan, my boy, you've done well," Bjorn said, clapping Logan hard on the shoulder. He shouldered his axe, and the lightning claws on his wrist also popped out with his movement. A gift from Ramesses. It was said that they would become more and more unique according to the enemies they killed, and could also record detailed honors. Looking at the Dark Angels he had felled, which were recorded on them, Bjorn thought this was much better than the one he had used ten thousand years ago.
"Mm," but Logan was clearly not happy. The reason was simple. Following the tradition left by the great Wolf King Leman Russ, a trustworthy old wolf had to be left behind to watch over the pack. The last one to be bullied was Bjorn. Now it was his turn.
Logan's gaze swept over the various Wolf Lords. Under his gaze, they all showed a "don't touch me" attitude. Even Harald Deathwolf, whose relationship with him was the worst, did not show any provocative expression at this moment, for fear of being arranged by the psychologically unbalanced Great Wolf. This was a campaign with the Old Wolf and the Primarchs, Bjorn's first journey after regaining his physical body. If he were to be left behind on Fenris, it would be worse than death! So now no one dared to provoke the already-dead Logan.
Except for Bjorn. "Keep it up! Be just like I was back in the day!" Bjorn clapped Logan on the shoulder, his mouth almost splitting to his ears. Don't be fooled by this cunning Great Wolf's half-dead appearance. The moment he learned the Primarch's detailed route, this guy had directly announced that Bjorn would be the Great Wolf.
The Dawnlight Fleet's next stop was the renegade knight world of Drol. Located in the Nachmund sub-sector, it was controlled by the House Mandrakor, and there were also a large number of Dark Mechanicum developing there. There were at least a thousand Chaos Knights on it. Just hearing this number made countless Space Wolves' blood boil. Countless wolf-pups scrambled to join this expedition. If not for Bjorn's superior skills, he would have almost fallen for this boy's trick.
'Yes, who can match your skills?' Logan thought, looking at the smug Bjorn, and secretly cursed himself for being too slow. He should have gone to the Wolf Moon and declared Bjorn the Great Wolf, and then run away himself. But he was too slow and was caught by Bjorn and given a good beating. Who in the Fenris system could beat Bjorn? Have you ever seen someone who can deal disruption field damage with a frost-weapon? Even Magnus would have to take a few hits.
And so it was. It was supposed to be the awakening of the Ancient, the arrival of a benevolent Primarch, the Space Wolves finding a new path, and beginning to develop towards a stronger future. They were all good things. Why did it turn out like this in the end?
Logan was full of惆怅. His gaze scraped over Egil Iron Wolf, making him break out in a cold sweat. This guy was also a cunning one. He knew that there was a big and WAAAGH!-filled expedition that didn't take people, and had directly contacted the Dark Angels' Ironwing, saying that learning was learning, and wasn't the Ironwing the best choice? As a result, he had taken his Wolf Guard and run away on the spot, leaving the unlucky ones of the Iron Wolf Great Company who had lost their duels to study with the technicians in the forge-city.
Everyone has a reason to run away, except me!
If he had known, he shouldn't have been the Great Wolf back then. Logan was filled with regret. In the end, under Bjorn's bullying, he chose to accept his fate. He'd just stay home and watch the house.
Joke. Who wants to be the Great Wolf? I don't, anyway.
Bjorn shouldered his axe and, watching Logan's dejected back as he walked towards the forge-city, he followed Romulus with a grin and boarded the Stormbird that had come to pick him up. *You can wrangle with the various 'heroes' on Fenris, monitor the overall development of Fenris, and expand the number of Space Wolves. I will tour the four corners with the Primarchs, lead the wolf-pups in battle, and find clues to the Wolf King.
