Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Flames Of The Forsaken

The first thing Kael felt… was silence.

Not the comforting quiet of peace, but the sharp, unnatural void that followed destruction. Birds had fled. Wind dared not stir. Even the insects had hidden from whatever he had become.

Kael's breath came out in slow, steaming puffs. The air around him simmered.

His body—foreign, hot, trembling with power—felt like it no longer belonged to the world he knew. Veins pulsed like molten metal under his skin. His vision was clearer, sharper. He could see every crack in the bark of trees ten meters away. Hear the heartbeat of a deer hidden behind the thickets.

But more than anything… he could feel the rage inside him.

And it was alive.

Kael took a step forward—and the grass beneath him burned from the heat radiating off his skin.

He grinned despite himself.

"This… this is power."

He raised his hand, and a surge of crimson flame coiled around his palm, flickering with a life of its own. Unlike mana, this energy didn't feel natural. It felt personal. The flame responded not to will—but to emotion.

It fed off his pain. His fury.

FLASHBACK

"Kael, you're too reckless."

"You're not fit to lead."

"You'll only slow us down."

Ceres' blade piercing his shoulder. Vera turning her back. The others walking away, leaving him for dead.

The memory ignited something inside.

The Hellfire in his hand exploded outward, carving a small crater into the earth and torching a tree into cinders. Birds scattered into the sky in a frenzy of flapping wings.

Kael stood still. He didn't even flinch.

"Good," he whispered. "Now we begin."

Hours Later – Edge of Halros

Kael approached the gates of the Border City of Halros, once a haven for wandering adventurers and mercenaries.

Now? It was a festering cesspool of corruption. A place where weak men prayed on the weaker, and the strong did whatever they pleased. A perfect nest of sinners. A perfect starting point.

The guards at the gate took one look at his tattered cloak and burned leathers and laughed.

"Look what the pigs dragged in," one of them snorted. "What happened, play too rough with a fireplace?"

Kael didn't stop walking.

"Hey! You deaf?"

The second guard reached forward to shove him back.

Kael grabbed his wrist mid-air. The man yelped as his skin sizzled on contact.

"You—what are you—!"

Kael's eyes glowed red. Hellfire Pulse activated.

A violent shockwave of flame erupted from his palm, sending both guards flying ten feet back, their armor charred black.

People scattered. Screams echoed as Kael stepped into the city, cloak trailing behind him like a shroud of ash.

Some ran.

Others… watched.

Whispers followed him like a shadow.

"Who is that?"

"Is he one of the Chaos Mercs?"

"No way. He's something else…"

Kael walked toward the center of town—toward the Guild Hall, where it all started.

He needed information.

He needed allies.

He needed targets.

Inside the Guild Hall

The building hadn't changed—same stone walls, same stench of beer and sweat. But the banners had.

Kael narrowed his eyes at the symbol above the mission board.

A golden flame—Ceres' new insignia.

"They expanded already?" he murmured.

"Power moves fast in a vacuum," whispered Lucivar's voice inside his head.

"Ceres wasted no time. He's probably taken credit for everything you did."

Kael clenched his fists.

But a calm washed over him. Not peace—focus.

He stepped inside and approached the board. Eyes watched him. No one spoke.

He grabbed a low-ranking bounty paper—"Bandit Camp in East Ridge – Reward: 20 Gold, Favor with Guild."

He looked up at the clerk. "I'll take this one."

The man, older and balding, frowned. "We don't hand missions to strangers."

Kael placed his hand on the desk.

The wood blackened.

"Then remember my name."

A flash of fire carved it into the desk:

KAEL VIRETH

Kael walked into the night, the paper mission crumpled in one hand.

"Going to play hero now?" Lucivar mocked.

"Not quite," Kael murmured. "They abandoned me because I wasn't a monster. I think it's time I showed them how wrong they were."

He stopped at the cliff overlooking the East Ridge.

In the distance, the bandit camp was just beginning to light torches for dinner.

Kael raised his hands.

And smiled.

[ACTIVATING: HELLFIRE PULSE – OVERCHARGE]

A wave of burning crimson surged forth—blinding, furious, and unrelenting. The camp was consumed in flame, screams echoing in the distance.

Kael watched, unblinking.

This was just the beginning.
