Chapter 3 - History of the Past: Part One

The subtle yet profound connection that sparked between them on the academy's shooting range blossomed beautifully.

As the seasons turned and their shared time at Pax and Lux's Gun Academy flowed onward, it became clear that Rod and Elena's relationship was transforming into something far more profound. Something irrevocably woven into the very fabric of their beings.

Together they carved out a tapestry of wonderful memories, each moment a precious thread spun from shared laughter and quiet understanding, all while diligently pursuing their studies.

Their routine often involved invigorating runs around the sprawling campus.

During these sessions, Rod would tirelessly expound upon the intricacies of his unique power with youthful enthusiasm.

"So… what I'm trying to say is that the large amount of mana that my body generates makes me able to move at mach speeds and be super strong! I tested my abilities in my backyard once and made it past mach 3! As I age I'll naturally get faster and stronger too! Isn't that cool?!"

Elena would listen with a playful indulgence. But when his excited monologue began to subtly stretch too long, a mischievous glint always appeared in her eyes.

Without a word, she would pick up her pace and leave Rod trailing behind.

"Slowpoke!" she always called out teasingly while glancing back over her shoulder with a radiant smile.

"Oh, you're asking for it!"

But then everything changed when they officially began dating, and their burgeoning romance weaved itself seamlessly into the fabric of their daily school life. Their connection felt destined. Like a match truly made in heaven.

Rod invited her on their first official date with a nervous but determined heart.

He chose a place of quiet beauty: a solitary hilltop crowned by an ancient tree whose sparse branches offered little protection from the harsh midday sun. But on that magical night, its purpose was transformed. It became a silent sentinel beneath a perfect sky ablaze with countless stars that waited solely for them.

Elena and Rod settled comfortably onto a soft picnic mat as the cool grass gently embraced beneath them.

That's when the boy embarked on an enthusiastic ramble about the cosmos, explaining every intricate detail of constellations and distant galaxies he could possibly recall. It was clear to Elena that he was trying his absolute hardest to impress her, and these earnest efforts were almost comically endearing.

Yet, it wasn't his knowledge, but the heartfelt sincerity of his attempt to make their first date truly special that utterly captivated her. She had loved him before, but now, a new consuming intensity took root.

She couldn't stop thinking about him nor his endearing nervousness.

It was true they were competitors in some aspects. But when faced by the university's final exams, the two of them wisely decided to channel their intellects into a more collaborative pursuit: helping each other excel.

In the intense time leading up to their final graduation exams, they met diligently for three months straight while immersing themselves in the vast ocean of their course content.

Sometimes they would escape the confines of the academy, seeking inspiration and caffeine in cozy cafes. Other times they found solace and focus within the quiet intimacy of their dorm rooms poring over textbooks.

Their collaborative efforts bore fruit and culminated in both of them achieving a coveted spot within the top 30 of the entire school's best final exam grades.

The day of graduation arrived with a blur of caps, heartfelt speeches, and exuberant cheers. After the official celebration, they turned to each other while their faces were radiant with unadulterated happiness and embraced in a tender hug.

In the moment, Elena quickly took out her mana-phone, playfully grabbed Rod by the arm, and pulled him close to her side.

"Say cheese!" she exclaimed with excitement just before taking a perfect selfie.

Now a new exciting adventure beckoned. They packed up their bags and decided to fully immerse themselves in the joy of celebration.

As they stepped out of the academy's grand front entrance, Rod effortlessly shouldered both of their baggage while Elena burst forward and her lithe form became a blur of pure excitement.

"COME ON ROD! Let's go to the pool!" she yelled as her voice echoed with uncontainable joy.

"I thought cheetahs didn't like water."

"You know, that's pretty stereotypical right?"

"I'm just kidding! Please don't cancel me."

In the present moment, Rod stood in front of the familiar imposing entrance of the very same school: Pax and Lux Gun Academy fifty long years after that joyful graduation.

Just six minutes ago, he had been watching his beloved daughter finally drift into a peaceful sleep. Then, he had risen and ran there, driven by an invisible force and an insistent ache in his heart. He needed to see this place. After all, it was not just a school; it was a night to remember.

Rod's gaze lingered on the academy's majestic logo for a few quiet minutes before slowly lifting his left hand and finding the gleaming ring nestled on his middle finger. Its metallic feel forced images from his cherished past to resurface with vivid clarity.

Back then, their adventures didn't just end in Grand North. One time they decided to take a small trip to the best beach in Elena's homeland: Ihari. It was a place of legendary beauty renowned throughout the continent.

He saw his girlfriend's athletic form become a vision of grace in a swimsuit again. The soft and shimmering brown fur over her skin was playfully tousled by the gentle sea breeze, and the bright sunlight caught her hair, transforming it into a radiant halo of light.

The beach teemed with life all around them. Beastmen and Beastwomen, humans, elves, even a few regal vampires.

It was a truly free country. A sanctuary where everyone was welcomed regardless of their origin, coming from every corner of Loran to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the northern coasts of "Saudor".

However, Rod's gaze was drawn to the many muscular men flexing their fit upper bodies rippling in the sun. This made an uncomfortable pang of jealousy shoot through him.

The man found himself inexplicably reluctant to reveal his own body to Elena after witnessing such sculpted perfection.

"Why don't you take your shirt off? It's like a million degrees out here," she had asked with a playful tone, her captivating eyes fixed on him from her relaxed position.

Rod stared for a fleeting moment at her perfectly fit body before quickly averting his eyes and a deep blush stained his cheeks.

"N-no thanks… I'm feeling a bit chilly," he stammered.

Even still, that day was a symphony of simple pleasures.

Both of them fully immersed themselves in the vibrant energy of the beach and even braved the thrilling descent of a few water slides that genuinely freaked Rod out.

But for him, the most cherished memory was taking countless photos of his beautiful girlfriend as she savored a melting ice cream cone. She famously hated being watched while eating, and her annoyed, yet embarrassed stares only fueled his desire for even more pictures.

One day, they patiently waited until the cool embrace of night settled over the landscape before beginning to eat their freshly prepared prey after a successful hunt.

Rod slowly took a piece of leg perfectly roasted over the crackling bonfire and brought it to his mouth. But just before he could take a bite, his actions were halted by a sudden sound of chewing emanating from beside him.

He turned his head and his gaze fell upon Elena, who was already devastating the main body of the wolf with an almost primal efficiency.

Admiring the uninhibited beauty of her "eating face" was something he always liked to do.

Before long though, she sensed the man's gaze and a mortified blush spread across her face.

"Don't stare!"

"I'm sorry, you just look so cute eating."

"S-stop!" she stammered before her hands flew up, covering her bright red face in a futile attempt to hide her embarrassment.

Then, Rod found himself in the present moment again, running far away from those memories.

The man moved back towards the humble camp he and Catra had constructed and stopped in front of the burnt-out bonfire. This place made his mind superimpose an illusion over the scene.

The image was of Elena and him sitting side by side, bathed in the soft glow of a forgotten fire and engaged in a casual conversation. It was almost like he was truly reliving the warmth of their past.

"I told you not to stare!" Elena's imagined voice echoed in his mind with a familiar playful annoyance.

"How could I not? You can't blame a guy for staring at a beautiful girl."

Then, the cruel reality of the present slammed back. The illusion dissipated and left only the quiet solitude of the desert night.

In that moment, no one was there except himself and the silent, watchful moon.

It took him a while before compelling himself to move again. Once he headed towards the trusty pickup truck parked faithfully beside their tent, the familiar contours of his past flooded him once more.

"Hey, I wanted to tell you something…" Rod's imagined voice drifted through his mind as he passed beside the dead bonfire.

"And what's that, Rod?" Elena's voice inquired while he walked past the back of the truck and its metal shell gleamed softly in the moonlight.

"Well, you always say that we are independent free spirits, right? Well… do you wanna, you know… stay a little closer together… and… well…"

"SPILL IT OUT!"

Rod reached the left side of the truck and with a subtle click, opened a small compartment in front of the driver's seat. His hand retrieved a precious photograph: a vibrant image of Elena and him frozen in time on their wedding day, radiant with joy.

"I love you, Elena… Will you marry me?"

Those imagined words spoken so long ago echoed in his mind, searing themselves into his heart as it made him remember every exquisite detail of their wedding and the profound life-altering moment Elena had become his wife.

Rod melancholically smiled as he stared at the photograph for a few precious minutes before a heavy sigh escaped him.

He gently placed the photograph down and headed towards the tent where he had left Catra.

As he quietly entered, his gaze fell upon his daughter's small peaceful sleeping form. She had unconsciously taken the pillow from the man's own sleeping bag and was now hugging it while some drool escaped her lips.

The innocence etched in her gentle smile made it seem as if she were having a dream untouched by the shadows that haunted his waking hours.

Her face made Elena's soft excited voice echo in his mind once more.

"Rod! I've got a surprise!"

"And what's that, dear?"

"We're having a baby!"

Suddenly, his mind painted a detailed picture of the moments leading up to Catra's birth.

First the joyous celebration of the baby shower filled with the warmth and laughter of all their dearest friends. Then the tender discussions where both of them deliberated over the perfect name for their little girl. And finally, the dawn of that miraculous morning. The moment they could finally touch her.

Rod recalled following the doctors as they efficiently moved Elena onto a transport bed unit in the sterile corridors of the hospital.

"It's time, dear! Today's the day! It's okay, just a little longer!" Rod said with a mixture of hope and fear as he squeezed her hand gently.

His thumb rubbed reassuringly against her fur, trying to reassure her that he would be there for her.

Elena merely stared back at him while doing her best to mask the unimaginable pain that was wracking her body.

A few hours later, the man found himself pacing relentlessly from one side of the sterile waiting room to the other. Every tick of the clock was an eternity as he was consumed by a terrifying thought: What if something went wrong?

His relentless pacing ceased abruptly when Doctor Halm emerged from the emergency sliding door with a gentle, reassuring smile on his face.

"It's done."

"Is everything okay?"

"They're both fine," Halm responded before granting him immediate permission to see them.

They walked for a few more hallways while sweat was dripping from his forehead and his body was trembling from the sheer overwhelming release of tension.

Then they arrived in the room.

Bathed in a soft ethereal light, he saw it. One of the many sacred memories etched into his soul.

Elena's radiant face was propped up in the hospital bed while holding their tiny Catra in her arms. Rays of pure sunshine streamed past the window as they illuminated them in a halo of impossibly perfect light.

And before anything happened, Rod ran towards them while his heart overflowed with a love so immense it threatened to burst. He reached out and his gaze fell upon their little girl.

Catra wasn't crying nor was she awake. She just let out a delicate yawn as both of her parents felt fresh tears of pure joy well in their eyes.

The child was undeniably a beast-woman, her small form covered in fur and her features predominantly resembling Elena's. Yet, her eyebrows were subtly shaped like his.

After gazing at her perfect face once more, he reached out and held his wife's hand.

They had indeed come a long way from hesitant friends to a couple deeply in love. And now they stood as a loving, complete family.
