Their wrinkled faces were tight with unease, their eyes darting nervously toward the heavy oak door that stood like a barrier between them and freedom. The atmosphere was tense, each breath weighted with fear, and I knew why. They had come for her the girl in the dungeon. The one whose broken cries haunted me every night. The one who had already lost the use of her legs because of him.
