But before she could answer, a familiar voice interrupted.
"Good morning, my darlings. Are you all ready for today?"
We all turned to see Vera, dressed in a red velvet gown with a long train of maids, approaching. She took in the scene and the smile on her lips faded and disappeared.
"What is going on?" she asked, her eyes flitting from each of us.
Lita sighed and I said, "It's Emma. Something happened to her last night... Suicide..."
I swallowed, unable to continue.
Vera gasped, pressed a hand over her chest and said, "Is she dead?"
We all turned to Emma's maid who was still weeping.
"Talk to me," I demanded in a very unsteady voice.
My fingers on the maids shoulders tightened and she whimpered and winced.
"I- I don't think so," she stuttered. "But I couldn't be sure. I was so scared..."
