POV: Baby Luna (Ember's daughter)
Mama's hurt feelings hit me like a cold wind.
I floated next to my twin brother Max, watching our mama stare at us with scared eyes. The bad lady was gone, but something bigger was coming. I could feel it in my tiny chest like thunder getting closer.
Max, do you feel that? I asked him without moving my lips. We didn't need words when we talked to each other. Our thoughts just touched like holding hands in the dark.
Yes, Luna. More bad people are coming. Lots more.
My mama sat down hard on the floor. Daddy Ash put the new babies in their safe box and ran to her. Daddy Cade stood by the broken window, looking outside with worried eyes.
"What's happening to them?" Mama asked. Her voice shook like she wanted to cry.
She's scared of us, Max said in my mind.
I know. But we're not scary. We're her babies.
