Chapter 17 - Dorianna

 "How convenient," said Marie Banton, her voice disbelieving, "that Cassandra would do such a thing now."

Her blonde hair was pulled into a chignon, and the fire highlighted her slanted cheekbones. Her robe was a deep burgundy, a color that complimented her creamy skin and light-colored hair.

I'd always thought Marie was pretty—inside and out. She'd been kind to me even after Joe left her for my mother. "Just last month the coven agreed to hear Cassandra's case for admittance."

I gasped and then covered my mouth with my hand, ducking behind the oak in case anyone heard my outburst. tugged the hood forward as if doing so might protect me from Dorianna's rancor.

I looked down at Grumbler. She bared her teeth in a silent hiss, indicating her anger at this new piece of knowledge. It matched my own sense of outrage.
