Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: He's Waiting for You

Unflinching, she cried out in delight, "Master, you've returned!"

Gu Xichen, unable to see anything, looked anxiously at Gu Lili. "Is my mother truly here?"

"Of course she is."

She watched as Master Mingyue slowly entered the room, knelt quietly, and before moving or speaking another word, she pointedly addressed Gu Xichen through Gu Lili. "Master, he has broken off our engagement."

Mingyue's voice rang cold and sharp. "Xichen, why?"

Startled by the familiar voice of his mother, Gu Xichen stammered, "I've fallen for someone else… and Lili agreed to let it go."

"Master, since he is unwilling, I too see no point in forcing what cannot be. Let the engagement be dissolved," Gu Lili said gently.

"What will become of you, then?" Mingyue asked, her pale face shadowed with concern.

Tears shimmered in Gu Lili's eyes as she smiled faintly. "Don't worry, Master. I fear nothing. I will live well—you need not worry for me."

Gu Xichen choked back emotion. "Mother… I'm sorry."

"That apology is wasted on me. The one you should ask forgiveness from is not standing here. I only hope you live a long, healthy life—fortune is worth nothing without it."

And with that, Mingyue faded into the stillness.

"Mother…"

"She's gone," Gu Lili said softly.

Gu Xichen could no longer hold back his tears. The room fell into a heavy, grieving silence.

Now that the soul had returned to bid farewell, there was no more need for vigil. Gu Lili rose and returned to her room. Gu Xichen, too, took his leave.

In that quiet room, two beds stood apart. Each lay on their own, sleep eluding them both.

"No matter what happens, if you ever need help, you can come to me."

"Thanks for the offer. But I'd rather starve on the street than ask you for anything."

"…"

At dawn, the coffin was buried on the hillside behind the temple. Gu Xichen departed immediately after.

The courtyard was left utterly still.

Gu Lili stood alone, feeling as though the vast world had narrowed to a lonely silence that enveloped only her.

She resolved to earn her own living.

After a simple packing, she locked the doors and descended the mountain.

Upon arriving at a shop in town, she bought five million in spirit money—and mailed it to Long Yubei.

Then, switching off her phone, she went in search of work.

By midday, when Long Yubei returned, Tang Qingli handed him a package. "Young Master, this came for you."

"For me?"

He accepted it, tore it open—and the moment the box unfolded, both men stared in stunned silence.

Long Yubei reached inside and pulled out the thick wad of spirit money, scattering it with a flick of his hand. Bills fluttered like leaves to the floor.

Useless in the land of the living.

"That damned woman!" he snarled, flinging the box aside. "Find her. I don't care what it takes—bring her to me."

"Yes, Young Master."

Seeing the dark fury on his face, Tang Qingli's heart gave a sharp thump. That daring woman was in for it now. No one had ever dared provoke his master like this. She must be tired of living.

He wasted no time tracking her down.

Within thirty minutes, he had a lead: Gu Lili had taken a job as a waitress at a local restaurant. She had barely finished the hiring process before Tang Qingli stormed in and took her away.

Naturally, the job was lost before it began.

When she saw Tang Qingli, her mind went blank with shock.

Before she could utter a word, she was shoved into a car. As the doors slammed shut, only one thought echoed through her dazed mind: I'm screwed.

"How did you find me?" she asked.

Tang Qingli kept his eyes on the road. "In this country, Miss Gu, even if you hid in a cave, I'd still find you. It was only a matter of time."

"…"

"Your Young Master isn't home, right?"

"He's waiting for you."

"…"
