A knot of frustration formed in Lucas's stomach. He tried to hide it as he glanced at Elena, who was now bending down to help Mila with her shoes. How could anyone be so careless? Mila was a bright, sensitive child, and yet the people responsible for her seemed to forget she even existed. Lucas felt helpless and angry. He didn't want to leave Mila with Vivienne and her lover, not for another day, not for another hour. But the law was the law, and for now, he had to follow the rules.
Elena sensed his mood and looked up at him. "Still no word from them?" she asked gently.
He shook his head. "No. This is the second time. I don't understand how they can just…forget Mila."
Elena put a comforting smile, "It's only for a couple more days, right? Then you can take her home. She'll be safe with you, Lucas."
