Day 9 – Nightfall | Outpost Outside Duskrun Hollow
The mist slithered between the shattered stones like it had a mind of its own. The ruined outpost stretched beneath the hill—half-swallowed by fog, cloaked in silence. But Michael could feel it. The air vibrated differently here. Like something just beneath the surface was humming—wrong.
Flash crouched beside him, eyes narrowed behind his darkened visor. "Three masked players. One confirmed linked to the squad. Move quiet. Confirm before we engage."
Michael didn't answer. His eyes were locked on the figure that twitched when his Ghost Node Scan hit. That tiny reaction… it told him everything.
He adjusted the hilt of his blade.
Flash moved first, vanishing into the brush. A flicker of shadow and steel. Michael followed, activating Pulse Caster mode—twin energy pistols sliding into his palms, humming softly.
The two flanked the outpost silently. Rusted walls loomed over them, broken by vine and decay. Through a gap in the collapsed gate, they saw movement: one figure patrolling the courtyard, another perched near the tower's broken
The third—the one—stood at the center. Hood low. Katana strapped tight. Every movement calculated.
Flash pinged silently. Michael nodded.
Go.
They burst forward—Flash leaping the wall, slashing downward at the lookout. Michael rolled into the courtyard, one pistol raised.
"HEY!"
The central figure turned just as Michael opened fire.
ZNNKT! ZNNKT!
The masked player dashed sideways, dodging two shots, but caught the third across the shoulder—sparks flaring from the impact. They stumbled, cursed—and the voice was unmistakably male.
The voice jolted him—too familiar. Then he heard the metallic artifacting at the edges. A splice. They'd tuned a modulator to mimic the dead man from the cave.
Rage surged. Michael holstered the pistols, shouted the command—
"Protocol Shift: Swordsman!"
The blade appeared instantly—Veilrend in full form, ghostlight humming across its glasslike edge.
The masked figure cursed again. "You…"
Michael charged.
Steel met steel in a burst of sparks. The masked player fought back, parrying the first strike, stepping into the second, slamming his elbow into Michael's side. Michael grunted, but didn't fall.
He spun. Horizon Cleave activated. His blade traced a wide arc glowing with green light.
The masked man blocked—but the power still sent him skidding back.
Flash was still dealing with the second, and the third masked figure was trying to flee through the crumbling rear exit. But Michael wasn't focused on them.
This one was his.
Michael's hands trembled slightly. Not from fear. From fury.
He lunged.
Their blades collided again—faster now, sharper, blood in the air. Michael moved with hybrid flow—Sword form infused with Combat User strength. Every strike landed heavier than it should have. Every dodge felt… timed. Perfect.
And then—
The world fractured.
Michael's HUD glitched. Everything slowed. His sword froze mid-swing.
And then—
Black.
[GHOST NODE: ACCESSING…]
Sync Level: 19%
Warning: Instability Detected
Michael's eyes opened.
Colorless sky. Grey endlessness. Cold silence.
He stood once more in the void of the Ghost Node.
The sigil hovered above him—larger than before. Throbbing slowly, like a heartbeat made of code.
A voice echoed.
"You triggered it again. You're syncing too fast."
Michael turned.
The Echo stood across from him. The same black cloak. Same mask. Same impossible stillness.
But this time… it was speaking.
"You still don't get it, do you?"
Michael growled. "Who are you?"
"Wrong question."
It stepped closer.
"The question is—who will you be after this system finishes rewriting you?"
Michael raised his sword. "I don't care what you are. If you stand between me and the truth—I'll erase you."
The Echo tilted its head. The neon-blue eyes flared.
"You think you're the only one chosen? The only glitch? You think this trial is just yours?"
Another flicker.
In the distance—far behind the Echo—another figure appeared.
A second Echo.
Feminine.
Long silver coat. Face covered by a smooth chrome mask with glowing gold eyes.
Michael's breath caught.
The first Echo stepped aside, pointing toward the newcomer.
"There are others."
"Not all of them want the same thing."
"Some want escape."
"Some want control."
"And some…"
Its eyes blazed brighter.
"Want to end it all."
Michael shook his head. "I don't believe you. This system is mine. I earned it."
The Echo's voice dropped lower.
"You were given it. Because the system saw what you could become."
"You are a contingency. Not a hero."
The void around them darkened.
Michael stepped forward, rage simmering beneath his skin. "I don't care what I am. I'll carve my own path. And if I have to go through you—so be it."
He raised his blade.
But the Echo didn't move.
Instead, a new message appeared across the sky:
[Ghost Node 2 – Challenge Postponed]
[Sync Match Incomplete – Awaiting 30%]
[Memory Fragment Saved]
"Not yet," the Echo whispered. "You're still incomplete."
The void shattered.

Back in Reality – 3 Seconds Later
Michael gasped, blinking back into the world.
The masked Reaper had taken two steps back—staring at him in disbelief.
"You just froze mid-swing," the man muttered.
Michael surged forward without hesitation.
He slashed—
—but the masked player blurred, activating a strange command:
/phantomblink
A burst of shadow erupted, and he vanished.
Michael's blade struck empty air.
Flash ran over, breath ragged. "What happened? You zoned out again."
Michael didn't answer.
His blade trembled in his hand.
He turned to Flash. "That wasn't a normal logout."
Flash frowned. "Then what was it?"
Michael looked at the black smoke left behind from the escape.
"…Something worse."
SYSTEM ALERT:
[Ghost Node 2 Encounter Logged]
[Echo Variant ID: 002 – Unknown Female Origin]
[Origin Users Detected Globally: 5]
[Protocol Convergence Event – Countdown Started]
Later that night, Michael stood on the rooftop of Gloomrest Loft. The fungal garden below glowed in quiet rhythm. Duskrun Hollow slept.
But Michael didn't.
He opened his system HUD.
The Ghost Node log was still flashing. Beneath it, a new tab appeared:
[Protocol Convergence – 91 Days Remaining]
A cold wind blew through the cavern.
Michael stared at the city, then the stars beyond the stone ceiling, and finally the blade in his hand.
"Five users."
"And I'm not the strongest."
He tightened his grip.
"But I'll be the last."
A faint chime pulsed at the edge of his HUD.
[Rotation A — Muster: 07:00 | Operation: Swampspine Breach]
[Recommended Loadout: Anti-toxin kit, ranged option, blade]
[Warning: Advanced Combat Scaling Active]
Michael exhaled through his nose. Dawn. No time to break.
A soft knock sounded behind him. He turned.
Asura stood in the doorway that led up to the rooftop, hair braided tight, jacket half-zipped over plating. The torchlight from the stairwell cut a glow around her.
"I figured you'd be up here," she said. "Flash told me you two went outside the perimeter. He didn't give details."
Michael said nothing.
Asura stepped up beside him and took in the cavern skyline. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. The fungal garden swayed below like a sea of silent fire.
"I'm not here to interrogate you," she added. "Just to say… I'm glad you came back."
He nodded once.
She didn't pry. Instead, she reached into a pouch and pressed a small vial into his palm—clear fluid, faintly blue. "Swampspine gas pockets like to rupture when they're angry. This will keep your lungs from locking if a Venom Drake decides to burp on you."
He managed the ghost of a smirk. "Thoughtful."
"Learned the hard way," she said, then tilted her head. "Rex wants a debrief before muster. If you… can't talk about whatever that was tonight, at least tell us where to stop people from dying. That's all I'm asking."
Michael folded his fingers around the vial. "I can do that."
Asura gave a small, relieved nod, then turned for the stairs. She paused halfway down. "And… Michael? I didn't know Micha well. But the way Flash talks about him? He'd be proud you're still here."
He swallowed. "Yeah."
She disappeared into the stairwell.
For a long moment Michael stood alone with the city's dim breathing. Then he drew Micha's daggers from his inventory. The metal caught the rooftop glow. He strapped one inside his cloak, hilt down for a quick draw; slid the other flat along his lower back.
"Stay with me," he whispered.
His HUD ticked again.
[Origin Protocol — Advisory]
Ghost Node Scan: COOLDOWN 22h 14m
Stability Window: Narrow
Hidden Commands: Locked [2]
Integration: 19% → 20%
A new, thin line wrote itself across the UI, as if deciding to appear:
[Echo Watchlist: 002 (Gold-Eye) — Signal: Weak | Directional Drift: Northeast]
Michael's brows knit. "You're tracking them now?"
No voice answered. Just the slow rotation of the sigil in the back of his mind, like a moon he couldn't stop seeing.
He closed the interface and left the roof.
—
Citadel — War Wing, Debrief Chamber
The map table bathed the room in cool crystal light. Rex stood at its head, arms braced, visor up, eyes harder than hammered steel. Flash leaned on a pillar nearby, katana unbuckled and balanced against his shoulder.
"You found them," Rex said the second Michael stepped in. Not a question.
"We found an outpost," Michael replied. "Three masked. Two neutralized, one escaped using a command I've never seen—looked like a shadow blink. They're adapting."
Rex's jaw flexed. "Locations?"
Michael marked the ruined compound on the rotating projection. "They staged here. You'll find depleted pulse cells and a dead relay node—tampered. If you post scouts along this ridge"—he dragged a finger along a jag of terrain—"you can cut off their retreat paths next time they try to set up in the fog pockets."
Rex nodded once, filing it away. "Good work. The two you bagged will go to holding. If they talk, great. If they don't, we'll track their supply chain anyway."
Flash's eyes searched Michael's face for a beat, then drifted to the timer on the map's corner. "What's that countdown?"
"Something that means we don't have time to get comfortable," Michael said.
Rex didn't press—he read men by what they didn't say. "Rotation A steps at oh-seven. You're slotted with Vanguard Three at breach. Asura has eyes on overwatch. Don't freelance past the line unless you can get back the second I call recall."
Michael inclined his head. "Copy."
"Good," Rex said. He thumped the table and the projection zoomed to a swamp-choked gorge. "Spore towers here and here. You clear them fast, it cuts toxin density in half for everyone behind you. You don't, people suffocate. Don't miss."
He let that hang. Then softer: "And for what it's worth—I'm grateful you came back."
Michael turned for the exit. "I'm not done."
Flash fell into step beside him in the corridor. "You're sure you want to run vanguard with your… situation?"
Michael slid him a look. "Ask me again after we crack those towers."
Flash grinned despite himself. "That's my guy."

Gloomrest Loft — Michael's Room
He killed the lantern and sat on the bed's edge. The quiet felt heavier than the armor.
He opened the Origin interface—not with a gesture, but with a thought. It unfolded instantly, intimate now, like a palm raised to his cheek.
[ORIGIN PROTOCOL: ZERO]
All Class Barriers: Removed
Skill Acquisition: Adaptive
Weapon Affinity: Infinite
Hidden Commands: Locked (2)
System Personality: Initialized
Echo Events: 1/7 Completed | 2/7 Pending (Sync 30% Required)
"Show me commands," he whispered.
The locks pulsed. For a breath, he thought they might click open. They didn't.
Instead, another panel slid gently into view he hadn't seen before—faint, like a secret it regretted telling:
[Safeguards]
Blackout Threshold: 62%
Pain Inhibition: Off
Override on Mortal Threat: Enabled
He stared at the last line. "That's why you woke up," he said to the dark. "You thought I was dying."
Silence. Then, in the softest grain of code, the protocol acknowledged:
[Affirmative.]
"And now you… track them," he added. "The others."
No denial. No confirmation. Just the watchlist indicator, sly as a heartbeat.
Michael closed his eyes and saw the gold eyes in the mask, the way the void bent around her like she belonged to it. He saw the first Echo's stance, the patience of a blade that could afford to wait decades.
He lay back and stared at the ceiling until the ceiling blurred into nothing.
It was a long time before sleep took him. When it did, it was shallow and full of green light.
—
Elsewhere — Unknown Floor
A cathedral of wire and glass rose from a sea of night. Players in scavenged armor crept between fractured pews, blades bare, eyes wide.
A woman stood at the altar—still as a statue, long coat rippling though the air didn't move. Her mask hid everything but the gold in her eyes.
One of the scavengers lifted a torch. "Identify," he demanded, voice shaking.
She tilted her head, considering them like curiosities. The torchlight split on her mask and died there.
A ripple passed through the hall as if the world inhaled.
Then the torchbearer's UI screamed.
[Warning: Localization Failure]
[Warning: Control Layer Skipped]
The woman simply stepped forward and lifted two fingers.
Reality bent.
The torch's flame froze mid-flicker. The scavengers' blades pushed back against their own arms. Somewhere deep beneath the cathedral, a bell tolled—not with sound, but with code.
The woman watched it all happen. Not cruelly. Not kindly.
"Signal confirmed," she said, voice low, calm. "Another user touched Node Two."
A shadow detached from a broken pillar; a second figure knelt. "Orders, Riven?"
Riven's golden eyes brightened, the color of old coins in deep water.
"We continue to the hinge floor," she said. "Convergence won't wait. And neither will he."
She looked up, through stone, through floors, through days, as if she could see a boy lying awake beneath a cavern city, a countdown reflected in his eyes.
"Hello, Michael," she murmured to the air. "Run faster."
—
Dawn — Duskrun Hollow, Mustering Gate
Armor buckles clicked. Blades slid home. Breath steamed in the cool cavern draft. Lines of players formed beneath banners, motion steady, faces taut.
Michael adjusted the strap across his chest and joined Vanguard Three. Asura walked the line above on a narrow parapet, calling checks; Rex's voice rolled over the comms with waypoints and contingencies.
Flash bumped his shoulder. "Try not to black out on me."
Michael snorted. "Try not to get killed."
"Deal."
The gate gears screamed to life. Beyond, a wall of fog curled like a living thing, shot through with sickly green veins of swamp gas. Far out in that murk, towers pulsed like rotten teeth.
Michael flexed his fingers around the hilt. His HUD slid into place, clean and quiet.
[Rotation A — GO]
[Objective 1: Spore Towers (2) — Destroy]
[Objective 2: Breach Swampspine Gorge]
[Secondary: Recover Any Reaper Data Shards]
In the bottom corner, like a secret only he could see:
[Convergence — 91d 23h 58m]
[Echo Watchlist: 002 — Drift: Northeast ↑]
He drew one of Micha's daggers with his off-hand and tucked it along the blade, a quiet, stubborn ritual.
"For both of us," he said under his breath.
The horn sounded.
They ran.
