Chapter 4 - Interlude: The Coven of the Greenwood

The Khemet Hastorias Library, a marvel of architecture at the heart of Mortenhagen Academy, is far more than just a repository of books. Inside, rows of sky-high shelves brim with treasures of knowledge: ancient scrolls, magical manuscripts, and handwritten records left behind by adventurers, scholars, and even ordinary folk. It is said that the books within could speak as though they had souls, guiding their readers toward the truest form of knowledge.

Forest Witch Nurhavana—or as the local folk call them, The Coven of the Greenwood has long been whispered of in fearful tones by both adventurers and common folk. They are known not only for their danger but also for their mystery. Their boundless obsession with forbidden sorcery—the kind outlawed by both law and morality—drove them to distance themselves from society. Their lives became secrets, locked tightly within the towering shadows of Nurhavana's forests.

Fragments of notes from the Khemet Hastorias Library recount encounters with the Coven of the Greenwood:

"This evening, we made camp at the edge of the Rimbasauria forest, when I saw something between the trees. A tall shadow, like a woman with long hair. The air around us changed in an instant; a magical aura wrapped itself around our bodies. Flowers surrounding the camp bloomed unnaturally. My friend Kaim quickly told me to get back into the tent. By morning, the sun had risen—but the flowers around us were wilted and dry."

—Garen Nirvalen, the Adventurer Nurhavana

"I was on patrol in the village of Sanilah when a villager asked me to search for their missing dog near the woods behind the settlement. I followed the trail deep into the forest until I found a dog with markings that matched the villager's description. But it wasn't alone—there was a little girl playing with it. She stood there, face expressionless. As I tried to approach, my whole body suddenly felt heavy. My limbs were bound, as though tied down by stone. Then, before I knew it, she vanished into the forest."

—Maruapey, a Soldier of Baladdir

"While studying magical energy waves radiating from the Jahvara River, I suddenly noticed a man standing beside me. He smiled, though his smile carried no warmth. Within moments, the world around me warped—the river disappeared, and I was standing in a forest I did not recognize. Strange whispers echoed through the air, and the trees ahead seemed ready to swallow me whole. When I awoke, I was in an inn. My mind felt empty, and most of my belongings were gone. Thankfully, I still had a few research samples stored safely in a Relic."

—Aloron Shagasta, Magic Researcher

"We of Tirengnari village have long lived on this fertile land at the foot of Mount Tirengkara. Once, the land thrived in lush greenery. But over time, the leaves turned a reddish-brown. We believed it to be the presence of the Coven of the Greenwood. Yet none of us ever saw them directly—only fleeting shadows. Then, one day, the village was terrorized by a mysterious force that abducted people at night. At first, we thought it was the Coven's doing. But survivors claimed they were saved by a red-haired sorcerer whose blazing light pierced their fear in the darkness. Since then, the villagers call him『Albin Maren』"

—Karianna, a Villager of Tirengnari

"The Coven's sorceress『Rosendahl Bellamir』was often seen bringing offerings to the sacred forest of Ruhkasa. She would stand among the trees, her pink hair shimmering like the blossoms of Anara Velis. Her face was strikingly beautiful, and every step she took carried a graceful elegance. Yet her expression bore no smile. To cross her, even by mistake, was to find no mercy."

—Soraya, Sanitire of the Great Forest Ruhkasa

"Never would I have thought that『Daryanova』would grow to be feared by every race in this land. I hear she now dwells among the ruins of Palama, consumed by madness-born sorcery. Rumors abound that she scavenges the corpses of adventurers who die horribly near Palama. Has she truly changed that much… from the person I once knew?"

—Basmus, Owner of Zaiqa Tavern

"I was stunned to learn that one of the Coven had taken a seat as a chief advisor to Virajantara, the High Sovereign of Aruna's capital. His name『Panasoley Wirak』. When I first saw Lord Panasoley, I mistook him for an ordinary tall man clad in a striking black mage's robe. His face was hidden behind a mask. Yet when he drew near, the air grew heavy. He spoke little, but each word carried the weight of a final verdict. Even with his face hidden, his unseen gaze cut sharp, radiating an oppressive dominance—as though he already knew every answer before the questions were spoken."

—Alhakar, Military Commander of Baladdir
