Chapter 123 - Kakashi of the Sharingan

When they found him, the sight would have made even the stone hearted feel sorry. Half his body was covered in severe burns, with his right arm nowhere to be found. It had already been injured, and it looked like Obito had suffered for it. It had even reached his face, with some of his hair being burned and singed off, as his right eye lay closed.

His breathing was ragged, but still he smiled when he saw his comrades, despite their faces being full of grief. Rin immediately started trying to heal the Uchiha boy, but deep down she, along with her teammates, knew it was pointless in the end.

"Kakashi, Rin… I think… I'm going to die now."

For a second, Kakashi couldn't process what was happening, just like how he felt when he had seen his father bleeding out on the floor of their home.

Then, all at once, a torrent of pain, fear, guilt and sadness drowned his spirit.

This can't be happening. No. No. NO!

Forcing his tears back, Kakashi trembled, "Obito, you're not going to die. You can't, don't be stupid!"

"Yeah, he's right, Obito," Rin cried, "You still have so much left to do! Remember, you said you were going to become a Jonin! And we still have to get back to Minato Sensei to-"

"Rin," Obito's voice was breaking, but he still managed to force his speech, "This is it for me. There's nothing more you guys can do to save me. But it's okay. I'm happy with the life I've lived so far. But you're right - there's still so much left to do."

He paused for a moment, coughing out blood and black bile. Kakashi was unable to speak.

"That is why I want you two to become amazing shinobi. Better than everyone else. Better than you are right now. Don't hold my death over your heads. Kakashi…"

Kakashi knelt down, next to Obito's body, "I'm here, Obito," he mumbled.

"I never did give you a gift for becoming a Jonin, did I? I was contemplating what to get you, but now I know." Obito drew in a long, shaky breath.

"I want you to have my eye." For a moment, Kakashi didn't reply in astonishment.

"What?!"

"You're a far greater shinobi than I ever could be, and I know that you can accomplish even more with my Sharingan. Take it. Rin, I'm entrusting you to carry out the procedure," Obito coughed, his voice strained, as his teammates didn't say a word, stricken with pain and worry. Rin slowly nodded, seeing Obito's serious face.

"Okay," she sniffed.

"Kakashi, to me your father was and is a true Hero of the Leaf. A man who protects his friends…"

Kakashi's heart skipped a beat hearing those words.

"Was I… was I at least a bit like him?" Obito asked, his voice almost desperate.

Kakashi's voice choked as he forced the lump in his throat back down. "Y-yeah, everyone would be proud of you, Obito. Minato-sensei, Kushina-nii, Katsuro-sensei, Father … everyone."

Obito paused for a moment, eyes widening and watering slightly as he laughed in a self depreciating relief.

"Hahaha… now stop wasting time here over me. Go! Run! Rin, carry out the operation, I trust you! Don't die here for nothing, you idiot!"

With that, Kakashi and Rin said their goodbyes with tears and Obito's eyelids became heavy and closed for what he believed would be the final time. As he sank into unconsciousness, he thought, Kakashi… Rin…

They ran like he said, because even if the enemy were taking their time to arrive for whatever reason, eventually they would.

They found a good spot to hide, where Rin steeled her emotions and began the procedure, using Obito's final gift.

A short while later…

"It's done." Rin said, her voice lacking its usual cheer.

Kakashi opened his eye, taking in the sudden change in perspective. It felt odd - one eye was normal like he remembered and the other greatly enhanced his perception, allowing him to see much more in the world. The combination disorientated him, and what was worse, he felt it rapidly draining his chakra.

But using his brain, he closed his normal eye and everything set in place. He understood now why the Uchiha loved their Sharingan so much. Strangely, even as exhausted as he was, he felt more powerful now.

"Rin," he muttered, "let's go back… even if Obito's dead now, I want to avenge him. I feel stronger now… I think we can do it."

Normally Rin would have said no, going back to face 5 Chunin and a Jonin in their state was suicide, but she believed in both Kakashi, and Obito's overwhelming faith in him, and her own emotions took over, as she nodded her head.

Kakashi with his Sharingan could see far more now, and his anger spiked when he saw 2 Iwa Chunin over Obito - they seemed to be trying to lift him.

Another thing Kakashi realised was that with the Sharingan, he could now use the Chidori much more freely. The tunnel vision effect would be dealt with, and he wouldn't have to wait till he learnt the Raikiri. He formed the hand signs as he ran, forming the Chidori in his left hand with the Tanto in his right.

The Chidori seemed to boost his speed intensely and before they could react, one of the Chunin who had been fighting them for a long time was skewered with a hole through his chest. The Kumo Jonin and the 2 Iwa Chunin felt their skin crawl, and when they saw his face grew even more shocked.

"The Sharingan? When did he…" The enemy ninja were utterly confused seeing Kakashi with the Sharingan. He wasn't another Uchiha, was he?

"For Obito." Kakashi steeled himself, gripping his Tanto as he removed his hand with the Chidori from the Chunin who slumped to the ground.

Kakashi rushed at them, with the thoroughly exhausted Rin having completed a whole procedure with little chakra barely being able to throw a few shuriken to support him. His Sharingan let him read their movements much more easily, and he felt fighting like this was like living on easy mode.

He dodged their attacks, and with his Sharingan and talent even managed to replicate a Jutsu they used. With his sword and Chidori, he made quick efficient work of the other Chunin and was even winning comfortably against the Jonin. They too were exhausted after the long battle, and weren't expecting to deal with this sudden power up.

But Kakashi had to be quick, his chakra was running out, and the Sharingan was draining him even more than the Chidori, and those Chunin were still meddling with Obito.

"Kakashi!"

Rin's shout made him look up, and he saw one of the Chunin holding Obito like a potato sack over his shoulder and running away. Seeing Obito being literally taken from them, flashbacks of all their years together- training, eating, laughing as a squad- flashed through the minds of Kakashi and Rin.

Rin pushed herself to her limits, forcing her body to move as she ran after them.

Kakashi also took it up another notch in anger and desperation, finally dealing with the Jonin with a stab to his throat. With no break, he ran straight for Iwa Chunin, catching up with Rin but they found themselves blocked by the other one.

Kakashi moved ahead of Rin with his superior speed, intending to deal with the Chunin quickly with his Chidori. But the Iwa Chunin managed to dodge. After a brief exchange Kakashi realised that these Chunin, like the other carrying Obito, were weird. Their strength reached even low Jonin levels, but their stamina was elite. Kakashi's opponent was intent on merely stalling them, and it worked wonders.

The relative passivity forced Kakashi to exert himself, and in the state he was in, it wouldn't be enough. Obito got further and further away as he desperately fought while keeping an eye on his diminishing figure.

There was nothing he could do, and soon even with the Sharingan he couldn't see him anymore through all the trees and foliage. He didn't want to give up, but soon, they heard and sensed the sounds of more enemies arriving hearing the commotion.

Kakashi knew that staying here would mean both him and Rin could die, especially Rin, who right now wasn't fit for battle. He hardened himself, making the tough decision and shouted out to Rin saying they should retreat as he disengaged.

But just then, the Sharingan picked up on a figure who appeared suddenly to his right. He looked, and found a familiar tall white haired man. His hand found its way to Kakashi's shoulder as he looked at the Chunin in front with both interest and anger.

"Kakashi… where's Obito?"
