"Stop pirates or you face my crew of 80000 me-"
"Oh hey you must be Usopp!" Luffy said brightly almost as soon as they landed on Syrup Island while the boy with a slingshot was trying to intimidate them.
"You know my name? I mean…Of course you know the name of the great captain Usopp!" The long nosed boy said sweating slightly at hearing that the group knew his name.
"I'm your cousin!" Luffy said as if that explained everything.
"What?" Usopp himself couldn't help but look confused now. His mom and dad were only children from what he knew and his mom died years ago…
"I call your dad my uncle." Luffy said bluntly and Usopps eyes widened.
"You know my dad?!" Usopp demanded making Luffy nod with a smile.
"Yep! He's one of papa Shanks highest ranking crew members! He and aunty Effilee are the ones who taught me how to shoot." Luffy said motioning to the gun at his side and making Usopp glance at it before nodding slowly.
"But now that you've pulled out your weapon what do you plan to do with it?" Luffy asked looking at Usopp with a serious look and making him pause and tense a bit at the sudden aura of a sort around the strawhat wearing boy.
"W-what?" Usopp asked his knees beginning to wobble.
"Now that you've pulled your weapon what are you going to do with it?" Luffy asked tilting his hat slightly to show his serious frown and one eye.
"Wh-wha-what?" Usopp trembled and the little kids in the bush were scared and running back to town.
"I'm saying that weapons aren't meant for empty threats. They're meant for action. Are you ready and willing to stake your life on that slingshot?" Luffy asked making Usopp shake for another moment before falling to his knees and dropping his sling shot.
"S-so this is…this is what a real pirate is like." Usopp said trembling on the ground until the dark aura vanished and Luffy's bright happy grin returned.
"Come on Usopp! I wouldn't hurt family unless it's a spar. But I'm hungry. Do you happen to know where would be a good place to eat on the island?" Luffy asked with a smile as he offered Usopp a hand up that the boy gratefully took.
"Y-yeah. I know a great place. Come with me." Usopp said being pulled to his feet and dusting off his hands as he put his slingshot in his pouch.
"Shishishi!" Luffy just laughed while a trembling Nami and an intrigued Zoro were following behind by a few steps, which really showed off Luffy's captain coat to the townspeople who all gave Usopp stink eyes as he walked by.
"So you really know my dad?" Usopp asked as they sat down at a little restaurant that he took them too and Luffy nodded his head rapidly.
"Yeah of course I do! He usually came over to visit with Papa Shanks when they came over every once in a while. He never shuts up about you and keeps asking me to at least check on you whenever I start off because he can't come to East Blue without making the Marines come down on you with all the force of a volcano exploding." Luffy said with a small frown at knowing how the marines would respond if there was a civilian who was related in any way to a Yonko or his crew.
"Would the marines really do that for someone cause of who their dad is?" Nami asked frowning slightly and making Luffy snort slightly.
"If they found out who I was raised by, which honestly they will in no time if they bother looking, then I bet you they'd put a minimum of a 100,000,000 bounty on my head. One of my papas got his first bounty when he was ten and it was mostly because of baa-chan and it was definitely more than 100,000,000. He literally hadn't done anything except hit a marine who had taken one of his younger sisters hostage." Luffy said with a small sneer, he didn't like most marines. Sure he knew some of them were just there to fight pirates who did kill and maim and everything. Some were just doing what they could to protect people.
Most of them however were just big bullies who wanted an excuse to bully civilians or get a free warrant to kill people as long as they were deemed to be 'pirates' or 'pirate sympathizers', whether they actually were or not.
"What?" Nami asked making Luffy nod his head and he didn't look happy.
"I'm not supposed to know this but one of my Mamas has a lot of resources that give her information…all of my aunts and uncles have bounties passed around to marines who around Whole Cake Island and it's territories." Luffy said and Nami frowned at that.
"Wouldn't all pirates have bounties on their heads anyways?" Nami asked confused as to why that was important.
"The reason that the bounties aren't published to the public or anyone outside of the New World is because my youngest aunt is seven years old. She hasn't even lost her first tooth yet or even decided if she wants to be a pirate or a cook or anything else! And she has a bounty of 300,000,000 on her head." Luffy said scowling and making Nami look horrified while Usopp flinched and Zoro scowled heavily as well.
"Some of my aunts and uncles, even the older ones, never leave their island which marines don't come near. They never interact with marines at all or even go near innocent people. Hell my sister has a 450,000,000 bounty on her head and you know what she is? She's a chocolate maker. A cook. The only time she left the island was when slavers took her and she's never seen or touched a marine. She's a chef who specializes in chocolate and they put a bigger bounty on her than anyone in the Blues and most in the first half of the Grand Line." Luffy said with a growl and a heavy air around him. It really pissed him off that they put a bounty on his aunts and uncles and sisters when they never even did anything or were even fighters.
"Why would the marines do that?" Nami asked covering her mouth with her hands looking horrified and shocked.
"Because they're scared of baa-chan. That's why Uncle Yasopp couldn't come visit Usopp. Because if they found out that Uncle Yasopp had a kid then they'd do the exact same thing to Usopp and he doesn't have the protection of dozens of protective siblings and a whole army loyal to his family as well as living on an island claimed by a pirate who's been powerful and established since Rogers time or at least close to it." Luffy said making Usopp nod slowly, so his dad was protecting him by staying away.
"Thanks for explaining it to me…I'm sorry but I gotta go real fast. I've got something important to do." Usopp said getting up and speeding off after a few seconds of thinking about it and then realizing about what time it was.
"Marines are…really that horrible?" Nami asked softly and she knew how bad some could be, she knew first hand about that but to think that all marines are that horrible…
"Not all I'll admit. Some are just doing their jobs and some have good reason to hate pirates and I'll admit there are a lot of pirates that are just trash…but…most marines I've found out are corrupt and only care about their own power and how they can kill or push people around with it. Marines didn't save me when I was caught by slave traders and held on their ship for a year. Pirates did." Luffy said and then his eyes looked far away for a few seconds.
"Most pirates don't give a damn about any disabilities as long as they can do something? Can't walk? Fine be a sniper. Can't talk? Fine are you good with a sword or sails we can make up signals. Can't hear? You're perfect for canons. Can't see? Okay can you cook or still fight? You're good, you can haggle over selling any loot we don't need and everything. Don't have one hand or even both? Well one guy had an axe, a lot of people joke about hooks and some can use swords so you're still good. Not all there in the head or have brain damage? You don't need to be a genius or writer or anything like that to fight and sail or even cook. Most pirates don't care about any disabilities. Marines though? Good luck because they'd use you as canon fodder and treat you as a dead person walking because if they have to chose between saving someone with an able body or a disabled one? They won't even hesitate." Luffy said with a glare in his eyes, remembering how he had seen marines leave one of their own comrades to die once when he had been with Mama Ama.
That sniper in the wheelchair had a small easy to treat wound that wouldn't have taken a good doctor ten minutes or many supplies and was the best damn shot on his entire crew. Instead of saving him the doctor had saved another crewmate who didn't have a disability who his Mama Ama had admitted wouldn't have even been able to be saved by the best doctor in the world. But the doctor still tried and left the other, much more competent, crewmate to die all because of something he couldn't control. Mama Ama had Aunt Hachee save that sniper who would have died without treatment while she slaughtered the rest of the marines after handing Luffy off to Aunt Mondee.
That sniper was one of the best snipers in Big Mom's crew now and had a hell of a grudge against marines for leaving him to die.
"Marines…really are just as bad if not worse than pirates…" Nami said and she looked as if her whole world view was shaken and rocked.
Either because she finally realized she had acted like a pirate all this time or because she finally realized that most marines were worse than any pirate.
