By the time I finally pulled myself together, my cheeks felt hot and my heart was still beating quickly, but I was calmer now, and I was beginning to pay attention to everything else. The room was quieter, and I felt the weight of Rafael's gaze behind me.
I turned my head to face him, and I found him watching with dark and unreadable eyes. I forced myself to straighten in the stiff chair and slid my hand away from Elias's though it was already too late, the damage was done.
Just a moment ago I hadn't been thinking straight, but now that I was, I knew that Rafael was an important ally who was only backing me because of whatever relationship it was that we had, and like he said, I had multiple targets on my back but I was protected with him. What I had just done might have jeopardized everything.
Silence stretched between us except for the beeping of the heart monitor. He tilted his head slightly, and I watched his eyes narrow in quiet amusement.
