Chapter 51 - Carved in Stone

The call came just after dawn. I had barely closed my eyes my eyes all night, I had probably drifted in and out of a restless sleep which irritated me more and more. When my phone vibrated on the nightstand, my hand shot for it instinctively. A call this early never meant anything good.

"Ma'am," it was Elias. His tone sounded urgent. "It's bad. You need to come, now."

My pulse spiked. I jerked upright, clutching the phone to my ear. "What happened?"

A silence stretched for a couple of seconds and I felt like I would lose my mind if he didn't speak. He spoke at last. "The cargo. One of the ports; it's been hit."

I suddenly felt cold. Like all of my ports, this one was heavily protected and it would take time, planning, and cunning to execute such an attack. "By who?"

He exhaled sharply. "We don't know at the moment. Matteo called but he's shaken, I can't make much sense of what's he's saying. We'll need to go there and see for ourselves."
