Instead, I whispered, "Do you even see what she is doing?"
Lupus's jaw tightened. "Kaelith speaks truths our council fears to say aloud, she has insight we could use."
My chest tightened. "So you would rather her voice than mine?"
He flinched just barely but his silence was louder than any answer. I swallowed back the ache, lifting my chin though my heart trembled. "Then hear me, Lupus, If you let her closer, if you let her words sink deeper into you, it will not be the fever that destroys this pack, it will be us!"
For a moment, his eyes softened, I thought... just for a heartbeat that he would reach for me, that he would remember who I was to him but he did not move, and in the silence that followed, I realized the ground under me was already cracking.
