I tensed as the detective entered the square. The call from the woman hadn't surprised me—I'd anticipated it. He'd come rushing to spare Claire from public shame, her loyal puppet ready to do her bidding.
What he didn't expect was my preparedness. Inspector Aurora had just sent me information confirming what I suspected. The Aide of Public Safety was disturbed by how this detective ran the town like his personal fiefdom. A quick probe into his activities revealed numerous legal violations and abuses of power.
"Great, another big shot thinking he runs the place," Chloe remarked with a sneer, causing the detective's face to darken with anger.
"You're all under arrest," he declared, motioning to his officers as he stepped toward the women.
