Maya's POV
Consciousness returned with a jolt as I found myself slumped in the back seat of a car. My entire body screamed in pain, and the world seemed to spin around me. Struggling to an upright position, I caught the driver's gaze in the rearview mirror. It was the same man who had driven me from Haven Harbor to this nightmare.
"Dean't worry, miss. I won't hurt you," he said quickly, noticing my panic.
"You already have by bringing me here," I replied, my voice breaking. I glanced at my reflection and barely recognized the battered face staring back at me. Fresh tears spilled down my cheeks. "Look what she did to me."
"Miss, I just follow Connor's orders. We don't question them," he said, avoiding my eyes. "Please don't make trouble. I'm taking you to my house where my wife will care for you until Connor gives new instructions. No one will hit you there. The boss was furious with that crazy woman for what she did to you."
