Maya's POV
The minutes crawled by as I sat on the stiff couch in Sasha's hospital room. Damon remained silent beside me, while his father, was uncharacteristically attentive. He even made a trip to the hospital cafeteria, returning with sandwiches and coffee, insisting we needed to eat something. His sudden kindness made me reflect on how differently people treated me now compared to when I was just another poor girl living with my mother. It was becoming clearer by the second that wealth changed people's perceptions, and this realization made me want that inheritance less and less.
"Mmm... oh... Fla-Damon..." Sasha stirred in her bed, moaning dramatically.
Damon glanced at me questioningly, like someone treading on thin ice. I gave him a small nod, giving him permission to approach her. He released my hand hesitantly and walked toward the bed.
"I'm here, Sasha," he said, keeping his distance, careful not to touch her.
