The conversation flowed effortlessly around my dining table, joy radiating from both my mother and Iris as they engaged in animated discussion. Their occasional glances and approving nods in my direction told me everything I needed to know – they were thrilled about Stella being in my life.
Things couldn't have unfolded more perfectly. Jade and my mother had formed an instant connection, chatting like old friends who'd known each other for decades rather than hours. They were already enthusiastically discussing the prospect of grandchildren, their eyes sparkling with anticipation whenever they looked at Stella and me together.
The doorbell's unexpected chime cut through our pleasant gathering, causing me to exchange a puzzled glance with Stella. Everyone we were expecting had already arrived – who else could it be?
"I'll get it, handsome," Stella said, brushing past me. I couldn't resist stealing a quick kiss on her cheek before she walked away.
