Life had settled into a comfortable rhythm lately. My career in law enforcement was far more stimulating in this bustling metropolis than it ever was in that sleepy town I left behind. I had an amazing girlfriend who captivated me completely, and a solid group of friends who had become like household. Everything seemed perfect.
Well, almost everything. Maya's mother remained the persistent thorn in our side, harassing her daughter with near-daily phone calls. The situation had gotten so bad that my sweet girl had taken to keeping her old phone powered off most of the time. This morning, though, Maya had forgotten this crucial step, and that witch of a woman had started her tirade early. I couldn't control myself—I jumped right in to stake my claim. There was no way I'd let that woman continue with her ridiculous plans of marrying my girlfriend off to someone else.
