Chapter 72 - TBTS: Chapter 72

"Hold the line!" Anika screamed, her blade raised.

But the dark magic was overwhelming, suppressing their breathing and pulling the strength from their limbs.

Aeryn watched it all from where she lay, breathing heavily as hot tears slipped down her pale cheeks. She had seen this exact scene too many times to count. The only difference was that those had been nightmares, and this was terribly, hauntingly real. The dark and red streaks of corrupt energy screaming toward the sky, the bodies of the fallen scattered beneath, and the canals of crimson blood running through the dirt... everything was the same.

As the suffocating dark magic choked the light out of the clearing, the voice of the entity from her fever-dreams began to ring in her ears, vibrating inside her skull like a heavy, leaden bell:

Ask the one who is the creator of everything for help... you cannot help them all on your own. Let it go... let it all go, and you will be saved.

The whisper was intoxicating, wrapping around her thoughts like a cold silk shroud, urging her to stop fighting and surrender to the endless quiet.

But where the Queen's spirit wavered under the weight of her nightmares, another girl's dreams were forcing her to stand.

Among the suffocating defenders, the twin sisters stood firm. One of them, Lyra, was the youngest girl in the entire team, but she possessed a rare, double-edged gift, the curse of prophetic dreams, and the art of ferro-sonic metalweaving. She had seen this very clearing in her nightmares nights ago. She had seen the black smoke, the ice-sealed boy, and the face of the dead king.

Knowing exactly where Maeron would glide next, Lyra's eyes snapped open. She knew she was the last line of defense.

"Now!" Lyra yelled, her voice cutting through the panic.

She let out a low, vibrating note from deep within her throat, her fingers moving in the air as if pulling invisible yarn. Iron is just a stubborn thread... born from fire, she whispered to herself.

The heavy iron chains binding Sakina, Zephyr, and Mavis reacted instantly to her melody. Under the influence of Lyra's sonic song and precise finger movements, the iron strands pulled, stretched, and twisted as if they were soft silk. The metal liquefied in mid-air, flying through the dark like a swarm of metallic hornets. Driven by Lyra's precise will, the iron threads wrapped violently around Maeron's wrists and ankles, slamming deep into the frozen earth to anchor him in place.

The dark lord let out a sharp hiss of frustration as the iron bit into his dark robes. For a single, fleeting second, his trackless gliding was stopped.

But the victory was short-lived.

With a roar of pure, lethal malice, Maeron drew upon the full depth of his corrupted void power. The sheer, crushing pressure of his magic shattered Lyra's iron threads into a thousand tiny shards. Exhausted by the immense strain of trying to hold his godlike strength, Lyra staggered backward, her nose bleeding heavily as she collapsed into her twin sister Elara's arms.

Maeron was visibly agitated now, his breathing shallow and his patience entirely gone. He did not want to waste any more energy on these children.

Before anyone could react, Maeron's physical form suddenly dissolved. He turned into a thick, choking cloud of pitch-black smoke. The darkness swarmed across the clearing, blinding the Omon warriors, making them cough and gasp as the cold, rotten stench filled their lungs.

When the smoke finally cleared, everyone gasped in pure horror.

Maeron had solidified once more, but he was standing directly behind Aeryn. His pale, powerful hand was locked tightly around her slender neck, lifting her slightly off her feet.

"I will kill her if you take one step closer," Maeron threatened, his voice echoing from the shadows, his eyes burning with a promise of absolute death. "I will tear her throat open."

The clearing went dead silent. Nobody dared to breathe. Vienna held her hand up, signaling the Omon girls to halt, her pale face tight with a desperate, agonizing helplessness.

Aeryn hung weakly in his grip, her white hair falling over her face. She was completely spent, her body shivering violently from the fever and the strain of her blood-bending. She knew there was no escaping this. She knew her power was gone, and her body was failing.

But as she looked out at her defenders, she did not look afraid.

Slowly, a soft, incredibly peaceful smile spread across Aeryn's pale lips. She looked at Vienna, giving the pale Regent a subtle, knowing wink, a silent passing of the crown, a final trust placed in her hands.

Then, Aeryn lowered her eyes to Rissa, who was kneeling in the dirt, clutching her own bleeding shoulder. Aeryn reached down with a trembling, weak hand, gently stroking Rissa's tangled, tear-stained hair.

"No... no, no..." Rissa sobbed, her voice breaking into a desperate, frantic whisper. She grabbed at Aeryn's hem, her chest heaving. "Please, Aeryn... no, don't do this... don't leave me..."

Aeryn's smile only softened. "Be brave, my sweet fire," she whispered.

With a final, impossible burst of willpower, Aeryn forced her trembling hand upward. She pressed her own palm flat against her forehead, drawing upon the absolute deepest, most sacred reserves of her soul-force—the trinity of blood, air, and water that lived inside her bloodline.

Before Maeron could realize what she was doing, Aeryn slammed her thumb directly onto the center of his forehead.

"What are you!!!" Maeron gasped, his dark eyes widening in sudden, terrifying panic.

The moment her thumb made contact, a blinding, pure white light erupted from the point of impact.

Maeron's eyes rolled back. A horrific, high-pitched, feminine screech tore from his throat—a sound not his own, but the scream of the stolen souls and the dark entity trapped within his flesh. The screech echoed through the quiet valley, vibrating the very trees.

Together, locked in a blinding embrace of black and white light, Aeryn and the High King dissolved.

Within a heartbeat, they vanished completely into a rushing vortex of cold wind, leaving behind nothing but a lingering wisp of grey smoke that drifted away into the dark sky. They were gone.

For a second, the forest was entirely, suffocatingly quiet.

Then, a raw, primal scream of pure, unadulterated grief ripped from Rissa's throat.

"NOOOOOOOOO!"

The sheer agony of her loss exploded from deep within her soul. The latent, terrifying fire-bending power within Rissa flared to life like a dying star. A massive, towering wall of roaring orange-and-white flame erupted from the dirt around her, shooting fifty feet into the night sky. The intense heat hissed violently, creating a giant, impenetrable dome of fire that completely cut her off from Vienna, the Omon warriors, and the rest of the world.

Through the roaring wall of fire, they could only see the silhouette of Rissa screaming, her hands clawing at the sky.

And then, as suddenly as the flames had risen, Rissa's energy completely bottomed out. The towering wall of fire vanished into a shower of harmless embers, and Rissa collapsed heavily into the red dirt, falling completely unconscious in the silent dark.
