Hikamu, whose real name is Brigitte Hikamu, is a descendant of nomadic people, born on the world's last Great Prairie—the Hulunbuir Prairie in Northeast Asia.
Nomads are born without a fixed dwelling, and they need to act as "Shepherds" on the prairie, which means herding those mutant creatures affected by nuclear radiation and the forces of the Death Domain.
This is an extremely dangerous job. The horses and lambs of this era are not as docile as they used to be, their size can easily grow to dozens of meters, and their tempers are as fierce as an Apprentice Death God.
But nomads have lived for this purpose for generations; if they don't want to herd, providing "natural meat products" to the wealthy and Upper City people, then their civilization would lose its meaning to exist.
After all, having grown accustomed to the free days outside the city, asking them to go to the city to twist screws, standing for hours and sleeplessly, they can't possibly compete with those city people.
