Chapter 8 - The Forest's Warning

The clearing in the forest was quiet, the fire crackling softly as night settled over the Highlands. Eryn MacLean sat close to the flames, her coat wrapped tight against the cold. The smell of burning wood mixed with the earthy scent of the trees around them. Callum Reid was beside her, his gray eyes watching the dark woods. The tome rested in his lap, its warm glow dim but steady. Isobel Reid and Mairi Fraser slept nearby, wrapped in blankets, while Rory kept watch, his red hair bright in the firelight. The river's soft rush filled the air, a calm before the storm.

Eryn's mind was busy. The chase with Lachlan had been close, and Eadric's shadow still hung over them. The feedback about her last book's weak start pushed her to keep the tension high. She leaned toward Callum, her voice low. "Do you think we're safe here?" Her green eyes searched his face, feeling the love between them grow.

"For now," Callum said, his hand brushing hers. "But Eadric won't stop. The tome's power draws him." His scar stood out, a mark of his past, making him stand out as a brave but troubled man. The love conflict was clear—he needed her strength, and she wanted to give it.Rory turned from his watch, his shy smile fading. "I heard something—footsteps, maybe. Could be deer, but…" He stood, holding a stick like a weapon. His kindness made him special, a young man stepping up.

Isobel woke, her blue eyes alert. "I'll check with him," she said, joining Rory. Her quiet strength grew, a sister who cared deeply. They moved to the trees, peering into the dark.Mairi stirred, sitting up. "If it's trouble, we're ready," she said, her voice bright. She grabbed a rock, her quick thinking always helpful. Her blonde hair glowed in the firelight, making her stand out.

The night grew quieter, but then a branch snapped. Eryn jumped up, knife in hand. Callum stood too, the tome pulsing. "They're here," he whispered. Shadows moved—three figures, cloaked, with Lachlan leading. His scar glowed in the moonlight, his dagger ready."Run!" Eryn shouted, grabbing Callum's arm. They bolted, the forest a blur of trees and roots. Isobel and Rory followed, Mairi throwing her rock to slow the pursuers. It hit one man, making him stumble, buying them time.

The chase was fast, hearts pounding. They reached a steep hill, sliding down to a hidden valley. A small cabin stood there, its door hanging open. "In here!" Rory called, leading them inside. The place was old, with dusty furniture and a cold hearth, but it was shelter.

They barricaded the door with a table, breathing hard. Callum held the tome, his face tight. "They're using its pull," he said. "Eadric's close." The suspense grew, the plot moving with danger.

Isobel peeked out a window. "Two guards outside. Lachlan's waiting." Her calm made her stand out, a planner in the chaos.

Mairi grinned. "We can fight. I've got an idea." She found a lantern, lighting it. "Smoke them out—make them think the cabin's on fire." Her smart plan was exciting, keeping the pace quick.

Eryn nodded. "Do it." Mairi hung the lantern near the window, letting smoke drift out. The guards shouted, backing away, confused. Lachlan ordered them to check, giving the group a chance.Callum turned to Eryn, his hand on her cheek. "You're amazing," he said softly. The love conflict deepened—he leaned on her, she felt for him. She smiled, her heart warm.

They slipped out the back, the smoke covering them. The valley led to a stream, and they waded through, the cold water hiding their trail. Lachlan's shouts faded, but Eryn knew he'd follow. The forest was thick, the trees whispering in the wind.

Hours passed, the sky turning gray with dawn. They stopped on a hill, exhausted. Rory built a small fire, Fiona's food warming them. Isobel checked the papers, her voice low. "We need Dunvegan to finish this. The keep there holds their last relic."

Callum nodded. "We destroy it, and the Order falls." The plot moved forward, a clear goal, avoiding confusion.

But a noise broke the calm—a horn, deep and loud. Eadric's voice echoed, "Reid! You can't hide!" His gray hair appeared on a ridge, with more men behind him. Eryn's heart sank, the danger growing.

"Move!" Mairi shouted, leading them down the hill. The chase started again, the horn guiding the enemy. They ran through bushes, branches scratching their faces. Eryn held Callum's hand, pulling him along. The love was strong, a bond tested.

They reached a cave, its mouth dark and wide. "In here!" Isobel called, pushing them inside. The cave was damp, with echoes bouncing off the walls. They hid behind rocks, the horn growing louder.

Eadric's men entered, torches lighting the cave. Eryn held her breath, knife ready. Callum clutched the tome, its pulse weak. Mairi threw a stone, hitting a torch, and it fell, sparking a small fire. The men panicked, retreating to put it out.

"Now!" Rory whispered, and they crept out the back. The cave led to a cliff, a steep drop to a river below. "We jump," Isobel said, her voice firm.

Eryn looked at Callum, fear in her eyes. "Together?" she asked."Together," he said, taking her hand. They jumped, the cold water hitting hard. Isobel, Mairi, and Rory followed, splashing down. The river carried them, the current strong but safe.

They climbed out, soaked and tired, on the other side. The horn faded, Eadric's men lost. Eryn and Callum held each other, the love clear. "We made it," she said, her voice shaky."For now," Callum replied, kissing her forehead. The romance grew, a light in the dark.
